Wright Linked With Palace Switch
Friday, 25th Jun 2010 15:53

Released defender David Wright is being linked with a move to George Burley’s Crystal Palace. Free agent Wright, 30, has previously been mentioned in connection with Leeds United and Charlton.

The former Crewe and Wigan man was told he was surplus to requirements at Portman Road at the end of the season, having joined the Blues from the Latics for £200,000 in January 2007.

Hmm I'm surprised at the amount of people slagging off Keano just because he hasn't made any signings! You do all realise the transfer window opens on the 1st July.

come back bennyblue all is forgiven.and good old eufa81 where have they gone ? we reckon town are'nt getting any new players in because roy keane will get the boot soon' and the owner is waiting to see if a new proper manager can get anything out of this lazy squad we have.explains the present no buy policy

as ive said b4, im not particularly pro or anti keane but once again the pro keaners r very quick 2 slag off the anti keaners despite the evidence against him on the matter of signings. keane has clearly stated that he wants 4-5 players in this summer & that he wants most of those in b4 the start of pre-seaon training. well, where r they then with only 2 days 2 go. wake up u pro keaners. he was clearly lying 2 everyone & as usual, itfc will end up signing the dregs that no1 else wants in the last couple of weeks b4 the seaon.

I have to confess the right back situation is worrying. IF Roy fails to sign another right back (and at the moment we don't look like signing anyone!), then the decision to release David would be a poor one. That said - Wright was rumoured to be one of our highest paid players - and was looking a little dodgy towards the end of the season.

P.S. Note to those who think signing free players don't cost money ... they do! They usually hold out for high signing on fees and the cost in wages for a player like Wright (rumoured to be on £10-12K a week) may be out of Palace's league.

exactly bluearmy.

& im not jst blaming keane 4 this, the hierarchy of the club have 2 take their share of the blame 2. once again we have 2 put with a club who cldnt care less abt the fans. u wld have thought that afta the dross of last season they wld have ben pulling out all the stops to make sure the same thing not happen again. while im not ruling out that gud signings cld still b made, i very much doubt it, & we cld well end up with another season of stuggle. oh, jst 1 more bugbear of mine, can people stop suggesting we shld keep hold of pablo. jst face it guys, hes rubbish. 2 goals in 2 seasons shld tell u that.

with regards to wright being released,
i think the 2 wrights were the best paid players on our books as we had to pay well to get them off a premier subs bench, we all want to see our club run well so that ipswich dont go down the pan. i believe we can get a right back as good as wright and pay him 50% of wrights wages. yes his contract was up so we could have tried to reduce his wages but i think roy was looking at the bigger picture

This is a mistake, in my view. Wright was good enough to get promoted with Wigan not so long ago, and he would have been good enough to go up with us. Once promoted, fair enough, he may well have been let go (which is exactly what Wigan did), because he's no more than a decent Championship player.

But the point is that he IS a decent Championship player, and we don't have too many of those left. Very, very worrying.

The transfer windown opens on July 1st. Deals can be completed before this date but the official transfer isn't concluded till after July 1st.

To address a few of the points made, D.Wright clearly wanted to stay here as was made clear in interviews before and after he was released. Had we offered him a deal on reduced terms and they could not come to an agreement then fair enough, but we did not even start negotiations. Palace are a club in financial trouble and if they are able to afford Wright's wages then clearly that was not a factor in our decision to let him go.

I hope Keane does find a better right back on half Wright's wages. Where is any evidence from his transfer record that he can do this however? Keane always seems to look at Premier League players who must cost a fortune each week!

He whose name he not been mentioned is Carlos Edwards! Isn't he supposed to be able to play right back? He must earn more than Wright, yet we are keeping him despite him being awful whenever I've seen him. Total waste of £1M+ for a player who we would now have to pay to get rid of most likely.

Mark - I agree with your Carlos Edwards comments that he must be on as much, if not more, than D Wright. But Edwards is one of keanes mates from his past whereas he didn't seem to have any time for Wright. I'm not sure that footballing ability comes into it.
Which is all even funnier when you hear the pro-keaners ranting about how magilton caused such an apparent mess by giving his mates long contracts. At least there was some flair and ability in those days.

Watching England game with supporter of over 50 years,he said that Keane did exactly same last year, said he was going to bring players in,did eventually when most of pre season finished. He seems absolutely clueless to me as well because discards or upsets players by sending them out on loan or states publicly is after replacement and nothing happens. Why is it most of players sent out on loan dont want to return.
Norwich have quietly gone on and brought in 5 players, could it be that with Keane in charge players dont want to risk being brought in to be sent on loan or worse.
He should never have discarded David Wright who was one of our better players in the worst year for results since I started following them over 45 years ago.

Having supported Town since the days of Scott Duncan I have seen managers come and go, some (far) more successful than others but never anyone as hapless and hopeless as Keane. Time he became a pundit; talking is all he is good for.

Whilst I share previous commentors frustration about the lack of signings thus far, I do feel the need to point out a couple of facts that seem to be being forgotten at the moment. Firstly although Keane did say that he would like to get his 5 or so targets signed by the start of preseason training, he said in an article on TWTD circa May 5th that it would be difficult to get them by then, as players, managers, chief execs and agents tend to be on holiday at this time so fewer deals get done.
He also said that he had told Clegg and Evans of the players he wanted to sign and they then try to get the deals arranged. In other words until such time as Clegg/Evans get a fee agreed with the selling club and probably personal terms discussed with the player and his agent, then Keane has no further input. So assuming he has told Clegg/Evans who he wants(and there have been articles that suggest this)then he can do no more at this stage, so a bit harsh to blame the lack of signings on him. Also with out of contract players, they are paid until June 30th so are in no rush and will consider all their options, after all the 2 Wrights and Pim haven't found other clubs yet have they?
So all in all, as frustrating as the lack of activity is, I dont think all the blame can be laid at Keane's door

Breaking News! TWTD has been renamed NEGAVITE TOWN FANS.COM!
I apologise to all who have positive thoughts, but so many negative comments on every story is just Sad @ best.
Remember, Keano does not own the club, ME does and SC is Chief Executive, so maybe we have not signed anyone because of ME not Keane! Also maybe on Thursday we will annouce a signing as this is when officially all the paperwork can be completed with players who have a transfer fee involved, and seems a sensible thing to keep it under wraps till then as it seems players can wriggle out of agreements very easily unless all the paperwork has been completed by the FA.

COME ON LET'S GET GET BEHIND THE CLUB, KEANE & THE PLAYERS AND DRIVE THEM ON TO SUCESS THIS SEASON - WE ARE THE 12th MAN!

COYB - Keano Keano Keano

Wright might be the 'model professional' but has no pace. Looked way out of depth at Newcastle away and generally vulnerable to pace throughout the season.

A point for all you whining old women - Marcus Evans will not tollerate a repeat of last season, so we have no reason to believe that there is nothing in pipe-line to improve on the squad. July 1st will be a significant date with transfers, stop filling your nappies.

stead14 - good point
ME, SC, and RK would keep any activity under wraps untill paperwork is signed as other clubs could come in and up the asking price.
