Smith Knows Nothing of Blackburn Interest
Smith Knows Nothing of Blackburn Interest
Saturday, 3rd Jul 2010 12:31

Defender Tommy Smith says he knows nothing of Blackburn’s reported interest in him in the wake of his performances for New Zealand at the World Cup. Smith has been linked with Rovers, having apparently been recommended to manager Sam Allardyce by All Whites skipper Ryan Nelsen.

Smith said: “I don’t know anything about that. My ambition is to get into the Ipswich team on a regular basis next season.”

The 20-year-old, who is off on holiday to Spain having been given three weeks off by Town, feels New Zealand team-mates such as central defender Winston Reid, who currently plays in Denmark with FC Midtjylland and has been linked with Arsenal, Fulham and a number of Italian sides, and striker Shane Smeltz have what it takes to make it in the Championship.

Meanwhile, an employee of Town owner Marcus Evans’s THG company has been charged with ticket touting at the World Cup in South Africa.

He doesn't know about it because there probably isn't any.

As someone said on anther thread, it stinks of lazy journalism... he played next to a Blackburn player in the World cup... Blackburn must want him. Probably utter rubbish! I do think Smithy has the makings of a very good centre half though... but he needs 1st team game time to carry on improving. (Preferably with us and not sold or lent to another team... look what happened with Trotter, when he was loaned out...)

I hope there is nothing in this. TS has shown a lot of potential and could ultimately become a very important first team player. I've heard that Blackburn don't have much of a transfer budget this year, but Allardyce has shown in the past though that he is a master at the wheeling/dealing side of football and may well try to offer a fringe player in a swap deal...

heyi sibo. "look wot happened 2 trotter when he went out on loan
"? wot happened was we managed 2 get rid of a rubbish player, 4 a small fee(compensation bcse of his age).dont get me wrong, he may well do a gud job 4 millwall but he was far below the standard of player we need.

I'd like to congratulate Roy Keane on his coaching of Tommy Smith at 'hoof it long' football so well that Sam Allardyce has been linked with him.

Tommy Smith will be an important back up player for us next season, assuming Bruce is sold.

Good, he'll be a decent player for us in the next couple of years and hopefully beyond.

Blues1... Actually Trooter wasn't a rubbish player... He was a half decent passer of the ball that had good positional sense and could make a midfield tackle.., He was a ball winner who could then do something with it when he got it. His problem was he had that awful knack of looking lethargic whilst still covering a great deal of ground. No he didin't show his best for us last term, but that has more to do with putting too much pressure on a young player in a team that wasn't performing. (last years start) it's too much to beasr for a youngster. I suspect if he'd come in to a winning side, he would have showed much more. It's no coincidence that Wickham didn't really get a show until late in the season, when we looked a much bettter team anyway. (That and keane didn't want too many scouts seeing him before we got his signiture!) But I think Trotter had what it takes to make it at Championship level and suspect he'll do well at Millwall. look at our side now and we don't really have a midfield ball winner and if we do go the 4-3-3; 4-5-1;4-2-3-1 style route and leave behind the outdated 4-4-2, you need at least 1 if not 2 midfiled ball winners.

Yep, we play direct football. Not like George Burley, David Wright said of him “He told me he wants to play a passing game, moving the ball around quickly, which suits me and he will be bringing in more players to suit the way he wants to play.” Those were the days.

As for Tommy Smith, I doubt there is any interest from Blackburn.

Sibo disagree entirly, Trotter had a good run of games under Magic and Jim and looked well below the standard required. Passing average at best. No goal threat or creative threat. Tackling wise didn't cover ground quick enough.

Its all about opinions.

I hope we keep him, he is a good player ready to get even better.

It's paper speculation on Smith, who I think will feature in Keaneo's plans.
With all the other talk of Marcus Evans ticket dealings, it's sad to see an employee of his charged with ticket touting in South Africa.

For What it is worth I thought Liam Trotter was a decent prospect, but think he will do better with Millwall than he would with us and it is a good move for him. Just wish we would make some moves in the transfer market to ease some tension amongst the fans. Not sure why there has been so little transfer activity but sure the next two weeks will see how our season is to pan out, lets hope it is positive otherwise if there are no arrivals there is something seriously wrong behind the scenes at Portman Road.

Yallop, I agree... it's all about opinions and life would be boring if we all agreed on everything. For instance our comment that Trotter didn't cover the ground quick enough; I disagree, i think he had that knack of moving quite quickly without looking like he was busting a gut to do it; a'la Dozzell. Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting he was the bee's knees, but I did think he was a youngster who showed promise. Then again we had a few of them in the past who showed promise but never took that step up. Time will tell.

trotter left us for a bigger and better club and smith will probally do the same, players are just using us as a stepping stone and keane does not seem to care!

thats it keano one of the few good players lets sell him what a numnuts

quite right paulnstar'its seems to be the prevailing attitude if they look any good sell them off fast......something strange going on at this club......if i was a right winger i would say i would say it's a sinister plot by some proprty devolopers.but i am a goaly so so i reckon it is just poor management from the very pinnacle down and we are chucking people out at the wrong end

paulnstar... do you actually support and follow Ipswich? I ask simply because in the 2 instances we are talking about here (Smith and Trotter) neither were "sold" by Keane. Smith is still a member of our squad and Keane has reportedly stated he expects him to be pushing for more first team action this coming season. Then with Trotter, Keane wanted to keep him and offered him an extended contract. It was Trotter's choice to refuse it and sign for Millwall and I suspect he did that because whilst on loan there he was a first choice in the Team and at Ipswich he was behind the likes of Norris/Leadbitter/Garven. (Actually he was in the team at the start of last year, but putting a youngster like him in a struggling team like we had is never easy for the boy and the not so "Family club" style supporters we seem to be getting more of these days got on his back, which probably affected his game... hence Keane withdrawing him as Norris became fit. Keane then understandibly thought, OK, we'll put him out on loan to a League one side and he can get his confidence back ready for the start of this year. Well it looks like he did... and enjoyed it so much he refused our contract extention and signed for Millwall. Can't blame him really.
So given the above, where does your comment "One of the few good players, let's sell him numnuts" come from? I'm confused...
