Pablo Backing Former Team Mates for World Cup
Pablo Backing Former Team Mates for World Cup

Town’s Spanish striker Pablo Couñago is confident that his nation will win Sunday's World Cup final against Holland. Couñago played alongside current squad members Xavi, Carlos Marchena and Iker Casillas and won the Golden Shoe as Spain were victorious at the FIFA U20 World Cup in Nigeria in 1999.

The 30-year-old told the club site: "We have a good team and maybe it is Spain's time now.

"Before the European Championships, we were known as the country that always faltered. There was pressure on the team from the media, from the fans.

"So many times Spain lost in the quarter-finals but in the Europeans we beat Italy on penalties at that stage and the pressure on the players seemed to lift after that.

"The players won the tournament and they have gone on from there. We have a lot of top players who know what it is like to win a big competition and we are in a good moment for Spanish football.

"Holland are a good side and Spain will have to deal with being favourites. The expectation back home is to win the trophy and I hope the whole of Spain is celebrating on Sunday."

Couñago is likely to be in the Town side taking on Histon at the Glassworld Stadium this evening (KO 7.45pm).

Ironic that he was the golden boy for the Spain Under 21's!

Won Golden Boot in the Tournie that Spain won over players like Ronaldino !

Pablo if he could just get all aspects of his game mentally / physically and technically in place has the ability to form a promotion winning partnership with Wickham .

He is 30 now, he should be thinking its now or never!

It seems clear to me that Pablo's career started to go down the toilet from the moment he decided to come to England. If I remember rightly Celta Vigo were desperate to hold onto him but he sat out his contract. Don't get me wrong, I like Pablo and think he's been a good player for us, but it seems he settled for "good enough" fairly early in his career rather than pushing himself to become the world class player we all know he could have been.

What a shame that the Spanish U21 international and "best player in the Premiership with his back to goal" as someone once said ended last season not even getting a place on the Ipswich's substitutes bench at a time we were desparate for strikers.

I think Pablo should call it quits and stop impersonating a footballer !!! Get a job that suits your skills and go and work as a waiter in Ibiza. Sell him Roy and throw yourself and a toaster in as part of the deal !!!!

Pablo is very frustrating. He has superb natural abilty and is quality on his day. He would have become a decent Premier League striker if it wasn't for inconcitency, laziness and lack of commitment.

Is he worth keeping? Probably, as even if he only has 5 good games a season, on those occasions he can win us games. However, he is on quite high wages for a luxury player, and letting him go would boost the wage budget for someone more consistent. Its a tricky decision.

I think Holland will win the final. Having said that the german octopus has selected Spain as its winner. The octopus never lies! Aparantly it has also recieved death threats after predicting correctly that germany would lose to spain!
