Town and Newcastle Targeting Romanian Striker
Town and Newcastle Targeting Romanian Striker
Monday, 12th Jul 2010 23:00

Town and newly-promoted Newcastle United have made enquiries regarding Dinamo Bucharest striker Andrei Cristea, according to reports in the Romanian press. The 26-year-old scored 20 goals and recorded seven assists in 38 games in all competitions last season.

Dinamo have put a price of £1.7 million on Cristea, but Newcastle are reportedly set to test their resolve with a bid of £1.25 million.

The Blues are also said to have shown interest in Cristea but with Dinamo preferring to deal with Premier League clubs and their greater financial resources.

A quick frontman, Cristea was born in Bacău and started his career with hometown side FCM Bacău, joining Steaua Bucharest for $1 million in 2004.

Two years later, having failed to establish himself with Steaua as they won two league titles, the 5ft 10½in tall striker joined FC Timişoara, despite interest from French side Sochaux.

A loan spell at Politehnica Iaşi followed in the second half of the 2007/08 season, Cristea’s goals helping save the club from relegation from the top flight.

In May 2008 Cristea signed a five-year deal with his current club. After scoring two goals in eight games, Cristea moved back to Politehnica Iaşi for a second loan spell in January 2009, returning to Dinamo the next summer, having netted seven times in 15 games as they again avoided the drop.

Once back at Dinamo, Cristea established himself in their first team and was the top scorer in the Romanian league during 2009/10 with 16 goals, netting a further four in other competitions.

Cristea has been capped nine times at full level and on 14 occasions by Romania’s U21s, but so far without netting an international goal.

No chance if Newcastle are in first. He'll earn twice as much warming their bench.

Newcastle are ready to offer £1.25, are we about to make an offer or are we just going to enquire then do absolutely nothing? as seems to be the way with the Town.

No, we wouldn't. We are the Championship version of Aston Villa in terms of fans. Fecking awful club to play for.

Having watched the clips, I don't know if I want the player or want to start watching Dinamo... He got the service and was in the right place at the right time for a lot of those goals - thus, a few tap in's. Newcastle and the Premiership may be too much competition for us, unless he has a deep seated fear of ex-bouncer gun men?

I can't see us signing anyone until we've got rid of a least four players, and if we're going to sign a striker I think Pabs and Stead will need to go first. Marcus Evans won't want all them strikers getting paid to play in the reserves.

Why would he choose Ipswich over Newcastle? Unless he truelly does want to play first team football for half the wages! If by the largest amount of luck we did get him, I guess this ends the Chopra speculation!

maybe newcastles likeness to romania will detere him .i would'nt want to go to either if suffolk was also a choice..lets face suffolk is the best bloody place to live in england so why would he go to newcastle ?

He would only get to choose between newcastle & Ipswich if both clubs bidded the same. If ITFC put in a larger bid and his club accepted it he wouldn't have the choice of NUFC
But, after watching the video i don't want him. The Romanian league is similar to Scotland, 2 or 3 good teams & the rest are dross. IMO he needs a better scoring record than that to be able to be succesful in english football.

If the reports are correct that our wage bill has gone from £5 million to £14 million a year you can see why Marcus Evans want the wage bill to come down. There is no way Ipswich could afford that. Take in account the amount of debt the club was in plus the £15 million to £20 million spent on players and the fact the best we have done is 9th I can see why we have no new players coming in.
ME will not give Keane more money till the club look like they are pushing for play off/ promotion. If by about October we are struggling then I think Keane will be replaced and money will be made availible to the new manager to start a re build or if we are up there Keane will be allowed to buy in the Jan transfer window. IMO

surely he gets the choice too say i don't want to go to newcastle cause its a grim miserable place and if i cannot go to sunny suffolk which has the best beer in all the world not to mention the ladies then i am not going anywhere.. ?

Newcastle has much bigger fish to fry they are looking at 5-7 mill strikers. I think it could be a goer!

still think chopra will come if we get rid of a few, as i think our wage bill is the reason he aint here yet
