Stead Set for Bristol City Talks
Stead Set for Bristol City Talks
Monday, 26th Jul 2010 09:06

Striker Jon Stead's agent is set to travel to Bristol City today for talks regarding his player's personal terms at Ashton Gate. If all goes well, Stead himself is expected to undergo a medical and hold further discussions on Tuesday.

It is likely Stead, who is contracted to Town until 2011, will have to take a pay-cut to move to Steve Coppell's club, so there is still the potential for the move to break down.

The ex-England U21 international, who was in and out of the Blues team last season, was one of the eight players recently made available for transfer by boss Roy Keane.

The Blues and Robins are said to have agreed a fee between £200,000 and £250,000 for the former Huddersfield, Blackburn and Sheffield United man.

Meanwhile, Celtic are said to be close to completing the £2.4 million signing of reported Town target Gary Hooper from Scunthorpe.

Good lad, and best wishes. At least getting some money out of it...

Good luck Stead. Did a decent enough job, but never seemed to go that extra yard. Will be good to get rid of his wages.

I dont expect Town to see any of that transfer fee..... it will go to Stead as a payoff to cover the shortfall in his wages.

I'll be sorry to see him go. A decent player, particularly when given a run of games.

Never seemed to be a favourite with Keane. I'm sure he will do a good job for Bristol City.

Another player off the wage bill, looks good for us getting Chopra or another decent striker. I like Stead, he reminds me of Kuqi in a way, but I don't think he is the natural goalscorer we need to play alongside Connor.

Wickham aside , I dont think there is anyone else in our squad that would score as many as Stead .
Must be replaced .
Also , is it just me , but every reported figure of a town player leaving seems to be low , and anyone coming in seems inflated - anyone agree .

As I've said before... a decent player with the ball, but often has to come too deep/wide to get it and therefore not an effective striker... more a support forward. Best of luck if you do move on.

Blimey I hope the revolving door see's some more in comings soon enough!

Stead, Bruce & Garvan all possibly gone by the end of the week. Priskin another one to possibly gone, both Wrights already gone!

The players we really wanted to shift-Lisbie, Quinn, Healy, Martin etc are still all here-I think Lisbie will be gone soon enough though if im honest, if we could sort out loans for Quinn & Healy then I think that has to be it for the outgoings.

I certainly hope we have some irons in the fire, I think our left side has gone from being the weak link to our greatest strength in lots of players that can now play there and add that much added width which we have been lacking-Kennedy, O'Conner, Civelli & even Martin can all play there.

Shame about the right side-its not as strong as it could be at full back with only Peters who can play there, you could argue Edwards can play there but I do not think I would have much confidence in him, he does however owe us a good season on the right of midfield if he can dislodge Walters. So a right back or a back up to Peters is needed.

The spine is pretty good, shame about Delaney being injured as him and Mcauley at centre half are a good pairing-Smith can come in and build on his world cup. I think another centre half-on loan is needed just until Delaney comes back.

As mentioned in a previous article, Leadbitter & Norris in the centre is going to be our middle pairing, beyond that though-we then are onto the youngsters, Martin can play there though but in an away game I am not sure how he would hold up. Purchase here is required, Keane clearly feels the same in trying to buy Derry earlier in the summer.

Then we are onto the strikers, Wickham is clearly the main man this season. Beyond that though, if Stead, Priskin & Lisbie leaves we are down to Wickham, Counago & Walters, take Counago out as Keane clearly doesn't like his style & we are very light up front. Two new strikers needed, one permanent & one on loan perhaps?

That works out as needing a right-back, centre half, central midfielder & two new strikers in my opinion. Five players in total-with less than two weeks to the beginning of the season I think Keane really has to pull his finger out and pull out all the stops to get these players in ASAP.

We can not have the same start to the season as last time out! I still remain optimistic though and I think we are in for a busy couple of weeks! UTT

A decent , honest player who i thought always gave 100% effort. Not the greatest player or striker but more than decent at this level and decent back up if nothing else. We paid 600k for him , now we might get 250k . Why do we have to give our players away but pay through the nose for new ones. Its crazy. garvan 200k , bruce 200k ! WTF . Colman was about to pay 400+ for him , and bruce maybe 500k to leics before Pearson went. Cant see pablo going at all ! would have preferred stead who is probably on identical or less money.

Another mistake letting him go...it's all very well people saying "another player off the wage bill" but Keane's not exactly replacing any of them with any quality is he?..and our squad is getting smaller by the day.

Good luck Jon..at least you're going to a club with a good manager.

I would have kept Stead as a squad player as he did chip in with a decent number of goals. However, he was a strange striker imo. Too weak to be a target man, not cleverer enough to be a link man and no where near quick enough to play off the last man. A jack of all trades and master of none

I forgot another fire sale player , tamas priskin for 400k ! We have to keep him and if fulop turns up maybe he will be more settled . But for 400k he might aswell be kept.

Glad things are moving, we need to shift some of these unwanted players - if it means doing it at bargain prices then so be it, most important things is to clear them out.

No disrespect to Stead, I think he gave his all to ITFC and deserves appreciation for that.

Hopefully this movement will open the door for the long-awaited new striker - surely Keane has someone lined up and is just waiting for the departing players to sign?

all these players leaving have been , and still are, dead wood, that over several seasons have done nothing in the 1st team. They arent good enough to even hold down a 1st team place, yet they are costing the club dear in overinflated wages!

If letting Stead go means we get a 20 a season man then so be it. We sold Dyer and then used the money to get us up and I never wanted him to go.woul have liked priskin to go instead of Stead but Stead never really was going to be the man to take us up.
Don't understand the Bruce comments when Magilton would not sign him everyone said what a crap manager he was and we should sign him as he was so good.
Now it Bruce is rubbish maybe Magilton had a point as now Keane feels the same way.

I didnt think the players leaving are rubbish - just very average! But they are on very high wages , which is probably some of the reason Clubs havent come in for them them too readily, and maybe why Town are allowing them to go at knock down prices, jut to get them off our high wage bill ! I mean , noone seems remotely interested in Pablo or Lisbie and Stead will have to take a sizable pay cut to join Brizzle. So if people really LOOK at what is actually going on, we are finally getting rid of very average players who have been here too long, tootling along in the "essy lane" !
