Stead's Blackpool Move Breaks Down
Stead's Blackpool Move Breaks Down
Friday, 30th Jul 2010 11:57

Jon Stead’s proposed move to Blackpool is now reported to have broken down. Earlier reports claimed initial talks between the striker and the Tangerines hadn’t gone well after a fee in the region of £200,000 had been agreed earlier in the week.

The former Sheffield United, Huddersfield and Blackburn frontman is said to have returned to Town for training.

Prior to Stead’s proposed switch to Blackpool, the ex-England U21 international was unable to agree terms with Bristol City. The 27-year-old is understood to be on wages approaching the £12,000-a-week mark at Town.

However much did Jim Magilton pay this guy? He must be on mega money and whilst still at the club ruining our chances of signing a decent striker. Bristol City today signed David James, yet Stead couldn't agree terms! I dread to think how much he's getting. Totally over paid.

If he stays I expect a lot more than the pitiful 6 goals (8 if you count his goals at Coventry) he managed last year. On his wage he should be banging in at least 15 to 20.

Why would he want to stay and fight for his place? His place will be on the bench an in the reserves? He knows Roy wants him out.
The money must be the reason. Or he cannot back himself to score in the prem. Plenty of strikers score losts of goals for relegated teams and get offered contracts by ex-rival teams ... look at Lisbie.

Yeah no way Stead is on 20k a week.
He was a 5th choice striker for Sheffield United and I thought we had a wage structure. Doesn't it go up to only 12k a week?

God knows what he's on and to be honest i don't care. I'm just saddened he didn't sign for Blackpool. RK wants rid, so he might as well go... to refuse the move, either Blackpool are offering really low wages or Stead loves Suffolk (But why then go and talk to them) I know if I were a footballer and my manager didn't want me, I'd jump at any oppertunity to move on... even if it meant a cut in wages... come on guys it's not as if he would have been offered the sorts of money a normal average person earns a week... he would still have been offered more than enough to live comfortably. It just looks like greed, and the fact in a year he will be a free agent, so can demand a bigger wage/signing on fee. OK he has a younf family, but so did I when I had to move jobs... that's life.

SiBo - Yes JS is earning much more than the likes of you and me, but everything is relative. I'm not sure I would take a pay cut to go and do my job in Blackpool (who will have a very difficult season regardless) if I was presented with the choice.

If Ipswich have a bad start, it is not unfeasible that RK will be replaced before the end of September, maybe even sooner. Why then not stick around and see how things go, especially if you are on good money?

JS is not my favourite player by any measure, but he has never struck me as the mercenary type. It seems he doesn't feel that this is the right move for him and, given that we don't know those reasons for certain, it isn't really fair to judge. Time will tell whether he has made the right choice or not...

suffolksam: Actually it wouldn't have been them because they weren't here when the contract was signed.

Jon Stead is the epitome of quality that does not fit the Keane mould of being Irish or being a Sunderland player. It's so sad, but it seems that this is the last decent football club that his sad personality will be able to blight. Just 12 months and we can breathe again.
So what will it be? John Elsworthy doing his Jackie Charlton in defence? Ted Phillips hitting his penalties to the underside of the bar? What does this man know?
