Keane Closing in on Strike Target
Keane Closing in on Strike Target
Thursday, 5th Aug 2010 16:28

Boss Roy Keane says he is closing in on signing a new striker, although refused to confirm whether that man is Cardiff frontman Michael Chopra. The Town manager is a big fan of Chopra, who played under him at Sunderland, but says there are other hitmen also in his sights.

Keane says he is getting near to adding his fourth signing of the summer: “We’re very, very close, unbelievably close. Just like any other player, there’s negotiations, there are talks going on.

“Obviously, Chops has been mentioned a number of times, but Chops isn’t the only striker on the planet, you have to be aware of that. We’re talking to a few other clubs and I spoke to Dave Jones about other stuff. It’s not always about Michael Chopra, trust me.”

At the weekend, Cardiff manager Dave Jones said Town’s offer for the 26-year-old didn’t yet match the figure the Welsh club still owe Sunderland for the one-time Newcastle trainee.

Keane says no moves in or out of the club are likely before the season’s opening game at Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Whittingham to replace Garvan
Chopra to replace Walters

I would rather have Ebanks-Blake than Chopra however I think he is even less likely to come. However if we managed to get one let alone both of those strikers..... The thought alone makes me speechless!

if we sign chopra ill be exstatic, if we can bring another striker in on top of that ill be even happier. either way, 2 exciting new signings could really put us on the right path. here's hoping!

Why does RK always have to say "trust me" when he makes his statements. This normally means he has a belief linked to his own wishes, but there's nothing concrete to back it. He has given us very little reason to trust him so far, so I won't be getting too excited that a great deal is imminent. I really hope it is Chopra or Lambert and not someone like DJ Campbell.

I honestly think the phrase "...who played under him (Keane) at Sunderland..." is now unnecessary in any transfer related news story, as it's a obvious fact.

I've heard whispers of either Beattie or Kitson from Stoke, although Kitson seems more likely as seems to be a more Keane type player.

Whoever it is, we need someone quickly. Roy Keane said himself that if we do not get promoted this year we have failed. Middlesbrough are one of our main rivals, so can we afford to go there with no fire power and lose?

Wickham is out for six weeks, Counago and Stead are so far out of favour they did not even start for the reserves Tuesday, and Priskin scored one league goal for us least season and none in preseason. We surely need two if not three new strikers?! Why do we have four goalkeepers but not similar cover in strikers?

Keane will wait a few more days ... then buy Walters from Stoke ...

I think there's alot of strikers out there that would do a decent job for the Town! When you look at Forest trying to buy Whittingham for a £million do you think this makes chopra expensive ?? although i would be extremely happy if we got both of those for a joint fee of £4million!!
I also still think james beattie could do a job at this level! he's a big strong unit but possibly too similar to what wickham will turn into!
Ross McCormack and Bothroyd are good shouts and even Fryatt from Leicester!!
All i know is any additions to the forward line that Marcus Evans is happy to part with his money for will hopefully be a decent asset!

Yes it's all coming together even if a week or two behind schedule. Have a great feeling about this season now play offs here we come people - all we ever lacked was a bit of potency and craft in the midfield. Chopra and Whittingham = Christmas come early COYB!!!

I have a close source to the football club and have been promised a very hectic month ahead I know what two strikers keane has been trying to convince to come and you will be surprised by one
Also on the way will be a midfielder and another defender john bostock on loan is one I can confirm has been talks about I really believe keane should have gone for koumas on loan a man utd youngster
Is also on the cards! Walters will be sold with a stoke player as part of that deal

Is it me or is Michael Chopra injured as im sure that i heard it from somewhere because if he is then we wouldnt get him anyway as he would not complete his medical.

Where is James Vaughan at now he is an immense player and would be an awesome signing for Town.

Is it just me or did i hear that Chorpa was injured because if he was we wouldnt be able to sign him anyway as he wont complete his medical.

What happened to our interest in David Nugent and Shola Ameobi who was newcastles main striker along with Carroll last season
