Palace Could Move for Pablo
Palace Could Move for Pablo
Friday, 6th Aug 2010 00:12

Former Blues boss George Burley, now with Crystal Palace, is believed to be considering a move for Town striker Pablo Couñago, a player he first brought to Portman Road in 2001. Meanwhile, Burley’s most recent signing from the Blues, midfielder Owen Garvan, will reportedly be unavailable for Palace’s opening game of the season against Leicester on Saturday.

Burley brought Couñago to England in 2001 on a free transfer from Spanish side Celta Vigo having first noticed him scoring twice for Spain’s U21s in a 4-0 victory over England’s youngsters at Birmingham earlier in the year.

Couñago was amongst the eight players made available by the Blues earlier in the summer and Town would probably allow the Spaniard to move on a free to remove him from the wage bill. The 30-year-old has another year left on his Town contract.

Burley is set to be without Owen Garvan at home to Leicester on Saturday with the Football League yet to hand them back their ‘share’ which will entitle them to formally make player purchases as they are not yet officially out of administration.

The Eagles will be able to field loan and free signings such as David Wright but will be unable to play Garvan, who joined from Town for £225,000 earlier in the week, until they receive the ‘share’ next week.

Elsewhere, Doncaster Rovers boss Sean O’Driscoll has revealed he was at Town’s game with Spurs on Tuesday. O’Driscoll has previously targeted out-of-favour Blues striker Jon Stead.

BITE THEIR HANDS OFF! Yes he is a fan favourite and been a loyal player too the club but he is past it now and is on big wages. Ship out with all our praise and thanks and get in a top class replacement. GOD I HOPE THIS IS TRUE!

He's always been too much style over substance for me - just not enough end product and far too much falling over. Having said that, I can't help but like him!
I think it's time for him to go and I wish him all the best if he does.

The only other club in the world I would be happy to see him go to. Because I know he will be appreciated, and that George Burley would take great care of him.

Pablo & Stead both off the books-good bit of business if we could pull that one off especially with our unbelievably close striker about to sign!

@big foot blue, Loyal player? The first time the club wanted to ged rid he stayed put due to the size of his wage packet and he is doing the same now.

It would be horribly sad to see him go but maybe it's for the best.

He'll always be a Town legend in my eyes.

Pabs has always been more style than substance for me, and I've never really understood why he's considered so passionately by some as a fans favourite.

Saying that I like the guy, he has something about him that endeers him to you, but he's not going to be part of a promotion winning team so he can go, with my best wishes and thanks for his service.

Burley will get the best out of Pabs.

He needs an arm round him at half time, not the hairdryer treatment!

BLueGoonie virtually none of our players could be part of a promotion winning team! Let's get real for a moment. Pablo has more class than all of the rest and with the right managment will provide.

This would be great as it would stop all this rubbish about Pablo should be in the team... but I suspect Pablo will just sit put and take his money as he did last year when Swansea agreed a fee and he refused the deal. (Pretty much what Stead has done twice this year with Bristol City and Blackpool) The only way to deal with this is to marginalize the player, which appears to be what has happened with Pablo as he is reported as being out of the squad for tomorrow...

ipswichsupporter88: you say you hope Stead stays... I can understand that with what we currently have, but my hope is... we bring in a couple of more players better than Stead, that means we don't need him, so he can still go!
That's not me wanting rid, it's me wanting better...

People moan that RK only signs players from Sunderland, at least they're Premier League, Burley looks like he's only signing our rejects and we struggled at Championship level last season. Palace are in trouble this season (I hope).
