Pablo Won't Travel to Boro Friday, 6th Aug 2010 10:10
Roy Keane says striker Pablo Couñago will not be in the squad for Saturday’s game at Middlesbrough. The Spaniard has spent much of pre-season in the reserves and was only a sub in Tuesday’s friendly with a Spurs XI.
The Blues boss confirmed that the 30-year-old isn’t injured but says he won’t travel to Teesside: “Pablo won’t be involved this weekend.”
Keane says he assesses players on what he sees from them in games and at Playford Road: “[I judge them] from what I see on the training pitch every day and what I see in matches. I judge my players on what I see on the training pitch.
“Players’ attitudes, desire to do well, hunger to train, passion for the game, heart, so he won’t be involved this weekend.”
Meanwhile, Keane has revealed that Connor Wickham could be back slightly sooner than the six weeks initially expected when he picked up his ankle injury in training: “I’ve always worked along the lines that if someone says six or seven weeks I knock a week off that, particularly with a young boy.”
The Blues boss says the England U17 international is on holiday at present: “Connor’s away at the moment with his parents in Spain having a week off. Hopefully when he comes back from there with a bit of a tan, feeling better in himself and having had a bit of salt water on his foot, we may be able to knock a week or two off that, without being daft.”

We want to get to the Prem so if it means letting Pabs go to get Scotland so be it. Pabs has done a job for us but he is not the man to take us up. Scotland and Chopra are better than Stead and Pabs. If we want a team of players who are fans favouites, Garvan, Pabs then there should be no moans on here when we are near the bottom of the league and we can all sing OLE OLE OLE. We need players to get us up and if they are only here for a year or two so be it. Lets get in the prem and face Man U and Chelsea then the Chopra's and co will come
I think the Q.P.R. away game last season sums up Pabs...when they stood off us and let us play in the first half, he looked a cut above; when they competed and got in our faces in the second half, the fastest Pabs ran was to chase after the ref to complain about being knocked over...
RK seems to be favouring 4-3-3 / 4-5-1 in pre-season so we only really need 1 striker on the pitch (I'm guessing it'll be Priskin) and one on the bench (Stead) - I don't think Pabs is capable of physically imposing himself on a game enough to play as a lone frontman in that system, particularly away from home where he'll get fewer favours from the ref.
He's served us well in the past, but we can't afford to be sentimental and pay big wages to a striker who isn't the solution to our lack of goals.
I have been a Pablo fan but not of late as the bloke is lazy and arrogant. He has no passion at all and will unfortunately just pick up his £12K a week until his ridiculously long contract that Magilton stupidly extended runs out. The man is an inigma and his time has run out. He won't go anywhere because no other Club will be daft enough to pay his extortionate wages. I for one do not want him in our team. It is disappointing because the guy has class but this league is about work ethic I'm afraid.
zippyrainbow: Your right it could have been different... Pablo could have been a strong, quick goalscoring machine... but he isn't. I can understand people thinking fondly of Pablo, as I do, but anyone who thinks he still has what it takes to score 15+ a season at this level are deluded. It is not going to happen... as someone remarked about the QPR game, Pablo is great when teams stand off him and let him play (pretty much like garven really), but as soon as teams are in his face and putting him under pressure, he can no longer handle it. (Pretty much like Garven) let him go with fond memories of what he used to be like, but as RK says, he picks the team on what players are doing now... not what they did 2/3/5 years ago.
Counago is the worst striker we've had for years, even worse than Priskin. Why so many people rate this waste of space is beyond me. He doesn't even try so why should he be in the squad. Keane is right this time, leave him at home he would only waste of a space on the bench. For all we know though he could be at Palace agreeing terms and we could have Scotland in the squad tomorrow.
Sebit, How many goals has Counago scored in pre-season? or any season for that manner. Plus he's 31 and Priskin is only 23 so more chance of him coming good I suppose.
Keano is dead right Pablo is deadwood, face it he is merely a shadow of his former self. He hasn't even been passing it well recently and that with shielding the ball is all he has. You cant hold up the ball well if you control it shield it and then give it away everyone gets out of postition when that happens. Compare how he was in his earlier performances for us to his performances now, it is obvious to see his heart is out of it right now. I think a move to Palace would be good for him. Was watching this the other day and it reminded me how good he used to be but sadly he is crap now!
One reason he isn't travelling is surely that he is hopless away from Portman Road. Those of you who are blaming the manager for this, do you attend away games regularly? If so, how many good games have you seen Pablo play? He just doesn't want it. Dropping him from away games is nothing new. Jim did it all the time.
If you knew you weren't wanted then you wouldn't give it your all. Also Pablo has told me how much Keane is putting the players down and how he keeps bullying them.
It's obvious it's a 'Keane Hate' thing, I still think Pabs is one of the few quality players we have left at PR, OK he's not a prolific scorer but has quality enough to turn a games & to not take him when we have a shortage of strikers shows how petulant Keane is. Pabs go to Palace mate, I'll be sorry to see you go but I wouldn't want to work with Keane either, at least George Burley is a gentleman.
