Warnock Confirms QPR Walters Bid But New Chester Not Entitled to Cash
Warnock Confirms QPR Walters Bid But New Chester Not Entitled to Cash
Wednesday, 18th Aug 2010 23:27

QPR boss Neil Warnock has confirmed that his club were the non-Premier League side which made a bid for Jon Walters at the end of last week. Meanwhile, the new Chester FC, which was formed from the ashes of Chester City after they were wound up in March, are not entitled to any sell-on from the player’s sale to Stoke, according to sources in Cheshire.

Warnock says that having missed out on Walters, he’ll now have to start the hunt for two replacements: “The thing is, Jonathan could have played up front or on the right and now I’ve got to look for two different players for the same role.”

In July it was reported that QPR had had an initial offer of £2.5 million rebuffed by the Blues. Last week’s bid was likely to have been at the £2.75 million rising to £3.25 million level subsequently matched by Stoke.

Meanwhile, it’s understood the new Chester FC club, formed after the collapse of Walters’s old side Chester City, aren’t entitled to the 20% sell-on which was included in the terms of the 26-year-old’s move to the Blues in January 2007.

A deal of an initial £100,000 and another £100,000 based on appearances and relating to Town’s league performance plus 20% of any future profit was agreed when Walters made the switch, having impressed former manager Jim Magilton in the third round FA Cup ties between the sides earlier in the month.

Town are likely to have paid most but not all of the second £100,000 and, having sold the Republic of Ireland B international to Stoke for a fee of £2.75 million rising to £3.25 million, the old Chester City would have received a windfall which in time could potentially have been worth more than £600,000.

The new Chester FC begin life in the Evo-Stick League Division One North, the eighth tier of the pyramid, on August 28th when they take on Warrington Town away.

Really hoping this money, which I think we all agree is good business by the club, will go towards bringing us in at least one if not two quality goalscoring strikers.

How about Ebank-Blake?

will ITFC be releasing a statement on why they're not giving the sell-on % to Chester? yes, we know it's technically a new club and therefore a different entity but would be intersting to see Evans'/Clegg's reasons for not doing the honourable thing - particularly in light of how Chester City went out of business.

if not the full amount, they could make a payment as a gesture at least.

I honestly think Keano has done well by ITFC here. He has come in, and cleared the decks impressively and ruthlessly - precisely what I felt was desperately needed when he took over.

For me he has earned his first troubled season now.

Inevitably, though, this is where his real task starts. It's almost a shame we can't look at his 2 years beginning now on the mission for promotion.

Irrespective, what's essential now is the calibre of the players that come in. Chopra for me lays down a firm intention. Scotland would be useful. But these players really need to be the new minimum of standard, if we're to push on.

And, Borge this one's for you: let's pray for a return to our football playing days!

we should offer to play the new chester fc in a pre season friendly next season as a good gesture

We may not have to pay the new Chester outfit any of the Walters proceeds, but I think in light of the current plight of football outside of the super rich clubs we should offer a payment to Chester.

Even if it's not the full amount, but say £100k would make a massive difference to them in their situation, and I feel we owe a duty to what is essentially the same club that we agreed the sell on clause with in all but name.

Would be good PR for the club, but above all it would be the right thing to do.

Then flash the rest of the cash and get me a top striker!!

myblueheaven;

Get real !! When we were on our uppers, did other clubs do us any favours, or did they all just come and steal all our best players for peanuts ??!!
Exactly- the latter, so we owe Chester nothing, either legally or morally.
Just my opinion, but can't help getting the heebee geebees when thinking about Chopra coming here. just think he might not have the right temperament for us, and may be a little resentful at being sold just as Bellamy goes there and Cardiff may kick on without him.
Also, why clear the decks of some high wage earners just to give all those wages to one man, (he certainly won't come cheap, and Cardiff won't subsidise his wages, a la Man City).
Would prefer Roberts or Pitman, (one proven, one with massive potential)
Just my thoughts !

whymark

Just because other clubs didn't see fit to make a moral stand, doesn't mean ITFC has to as well, or do you think that great old phrase "the Ipswich way" has died forever.

A sad day if a gesture such as that isn't even considered, IMO.

McCorrmacks agent has said that he has been told he can go out on loan and the football league want Cardiff to prove they cant afford Bellamy and must pay Motherwell the 175k they still owe.

Chopra is Keanes number one target, if we bid 2.5 million for Chopra before the sale of Walters, are we about to put a improved bid in for Chopra and a straight cash bid for McCormack.
McCormack will not play for Cardiff again as he gave his shirt away to a fan so he will be going somewhere if not Ipswich surly with the saving on Walters wages we can get one if not both of them?

Goonie, have just had enough of us doing things "the Ipswich way", (which, by the way, died out with the Cobbolds), when ALL others look after number 1.
The Cobbolds DID run things the right way, but with their passing, we've been run by a succession of men who have, rightly or wrongly, run the club as a business, which, I'm afraid, football is these days, to anyone other than tha richest premier league clubs.

How about Darius Vassel? I read Leeds are chasing him as he is a free agent. If Leeds think they could have him why don't we?
I am keen on Chopra, Scotland and Ebanks-Blake. Not so much on McCormack but I wouldn;t say no to his arrival anyway.
We have to move quickly because there is no time left and the matches are passing one after another without us scoring enough goals!!!

We can't just pocket the £600,000. Do something for the Chester phoenix club; do something for the old Chester's creditors. Doesn't have to be the full amount, but something.

We should make a payment to show Ipswich is still a club with standards ! As to the money now available it should be used to fulfil all the promises made . My reserves of faith and trust are fast running out !!!

Matches are passing us by and we are not scoring enough goals? In three matches we have scored 7 goals. That is over 2 per game. Am I missing something?

I agree with the posters above, that with the current state of football it would be a great gesture to either pay The "New" Chester a goodwill payment or arrange a Pre-Season game.

Sure we may see a new striker on board today/tomorrow and ready to play against Palace.

Here here on the Chester gesture. These sort of things might stick in the throat for a little while, but equally football is the peoples game, businessmen and their self regarding attitude are what's got the game in the dreadful situation it is now.
Even better a gesture like this should put pressure on the agent (T@$ts, as they are also known) and the player to make their own gesture.... Nurse.

If its so important to give money away to businesses that are not entitled to receive it, why not let fans who want to pay it out of their own pockets? We could add £1 onto ticket prices or have a collection bucket so that anyone who feels so disposed can give their own money away to the new Chester.

At least we have a nice sum to play with, now keano's cut the dead wood from the squad we have a reduced wage bill too. With the great start to the season I think ITFC is a better prospect for players to sign for, a much better one than 12 months ago. I have a feeling Cardiff have already accepted a bid from us hence having the money to sign the ultimate scummer Bellamy and pay off Motherwell. Happy days are here again (hopefully!)

I am really impressed with what is being said here regarding new Chester.......just goes to show what a good bunch we all are deep down

And yes I still think there should be an 'Ipswich way'.....lead by example. The cobbolds may have gone but who they were and what this club stood for during our best times can remain. Where is the harm in that?

Do the decent thing Clegg/Evans and throw some of what was agreed to the club and creditors

If Walters had any morales he'd stump up a donation to the "New" Chester, I'm sure on his over-inflated Stoke City wage he can now afford it!!!

I think whymarksmyhero has a valid point, no one came cap in hand to us when we were in financial trouble, they just fleeced our best players for as little as possible! (Charlton being the main culprits!)

However, I accept that a £100k gesture would be "a nice thing to do" but maybe a pre-season friendly would be the better way to go.

The foundations of our club are built upon sportsmanship and ethics. What would Mr John have done? Probably have sent the Chester FC board a big crate of whisky and promised to bring a decent side up for a pre-season friendly next year.

I love the fact that we're even discussing the possibility of making a payment to Chester FC, it's what sets us apart from other clubs in this 'win at all costs' league. However, my concern is this: is one club allowed to make such a large payment to another club out of pure goodwill and no liability? Wouldn't other clubs in the Evo-Stick League Division One North kick up somewhat of a fuss about a large 'donation' from a league club? I'm not sure the authorities would allow it.

Let's go up for a friendly - we've benefited greatly from the misfortune of our fellow supporters in Chester, let's give them something to smile about.

Hopefully Clegg and co will be announcing the signing of at least one very good striker before Saturday - two if Stead is also sold.

Make a Chester gesture! Surely there is enough creativity in our leadership to come up with an idea even if it's not a straight cash payment. Let's show that football isn't only big business. There but for the grace of Evans go we - and who knows what the future will bring. I for one can genuinely say I never want to become a Man City, however many trophies that provides.
