Keane: Result Was Fair
Keane: Result Was Fair
Tuesday, 14th Sep 2010 23:10

Boss Roy Keane admitted that his Town side were very much second best to QPR as Neil Warnock’s men left Suffolk after a 3-0 victory. Despite his team’s comfortable win, Warnock felt Portman Road had changed for the better this season.

Keane had no argument with the scoreline: “It was probably a fair result. I don’t think we turned up tonight, we never got going. The second goal killed the game for us.

“I took a few gambles in the second half, which was the only way we were going get back into the game. It was either that or we were going to lose by four or five, it was one of those nights.

“Credit to QPR, they took full advantage of that and they did a good job on us. That’s what good teams do.”

The Blues boss says few of his team impressed: “It was one of those nights where I don’t think many players can say that they were at their best. Márton made some good saves, Connor did well when he came on, but other than that we all looked like we were at 90% and we’re not good enough to get away with that.

Despite the defeat, Keane says there’s no need for too much gloom: “It’s important that we chill out and stay relaxed. Over the last few weeks we haven’t felt that we are that good a team and all of a sudden this evening I don’t think we’re that bad a team. It’s football, it happens.”

Keane says there should be news on the targeted loanee, believed to be Sunderland's Jack Colback, on Thursday.

A buoyant Neil Warnock felt it was important to begin the game strongly: “I knew we had to start well today. Ipswich have had a great start to the season and there’s nothing better football-wise than playing an evening match at Portman Road.

“I was pleased to see the rain bucketing down, it was a great evening to be a forward tonight I thought. We started well and took the game to them and I was delighted when the first goal came and I think it calmed us down and gave us that belief.

“I think we played very well tonight and I don’t think anybody could have coped with the way we played."

Warnock says he expects the Blues to bounce back against Cardiff: “I think you’ll see a different Ipswich performance on Saturday, but on the night we played very well and Roy will be the first to say that.

“But you can see the club has changed this year, you can see the optimism, you can see the fans raring to go and I think it’s a far better place now down here than it was last year.”

Feeling really sorry for myself at ht,then the para who survived that horrific bomb blast, going round the pitch with his mates, put everything into perspective.

Ok, I've kept my mouth shout over the past year as I know the game of football and I know it takes time for anyone to build a team, an environment and confidence within a club before they can take it forward. Our very own Sir Bob is a terrific example of this. He was given a serious amount of time, but we can't keep dwelling on our glorious past. We have to look forward and I'm gonna say it......with Keane at the helm I believe (although I hope I'm wrong) that the future isn't bright.

Last night I saw a team in blue that lacked the creativity, patience and quality to do anything of any significance in this league. From the constant long balls to the same old throw inns and corners, we look average at best. Before the game I didn't know what Grant's signals meant when taking a corner, but by halt time I, along with QPR, had figured it out, so why do we carry on? Then there's the throws from Carlos. Every time we did exactly the same thing and very rarely did we beat the first man. Predictable and easy to defend. Then there's our ball retention, or lack of. A good side will keep the ball. If there's no route forward, go back and start again. Movement is key and QPR gave us a lesson on just how simple football is. If you have the ball, the other team can't score! We seem to pass it two or three times between the back four and central mid players before getting frustrated, bored or just run out of ideas so inevitably it's pumped long to Scotland (the smallest guy on the pitch), who then has zero support even if he were to win it. Again, predictable and boring to watch.

I have no idea if this is what they are being trained to do, or if it's the fear of playing at home, but either way the manager has to accept responsibility after a year of being in charge. Nothing's changed. His eye for a player is terrible. Kennedy was never a great left back in his younger days. I could count on one hand how many times he crossed the half way line in the entire game. The keeper. OK, he made some decent saves, most of which you expect him to save, but his distribution is terrible and he refuses to play out from the back using is full backs. Sorry, but £750,000 + plus add on's....do me a favour Keane. How much has he spent since being here and how many of those players have been a success? The answer is far too much, and none!

Magilton had his faults, but we were a decent team that tried to play football. Where he/we lacked at the time was steel. We couldn't shut up shop, play hard and be difficult to beat. That's what I expected Keane to add. That desire to not get beaten, to die for the cause, but to play good, attacking football. It seems we've still not got that ability to be a tough team to play, but have also lost the ability to play football. The pitch looked fantastic last night, but all we're doing is encouraging decent teams like QPR to come to PR and play football when we don't seem to want to. Long balls are part of the game, but at the right time and with a little imagination not just lumped up in the air in the hope that the smallest guy on the pitch might do something. It's terrible.

Now, before the usual suspects start screaming and shouting and calling me negative etc, consider that I've been to plenty of games home and away during the Keane era, I'm not booing or making incorrect, stupid comments, I'm just trying to have a decent and honest opinion about where I see our club going. We came up against a good side last night and sometimes you have to hold your hands up and admit that the best team won, but all the noises coming out of Ipswich are that we're a decent side heading in the right direction, so why are we being completely outplayed by a side I saw us beat in their own back yard towards the end of last season comfortably? We're not moving forward. This league is unbelievabley tough and to succeed you don't need to be world beaters (Blackpool), you just need a team to play decent football and work hard. We don't play decent football and don't work as hard as we should.

The players jumped in their £50,000 + cars last night, went home and couldn't give a toss about average Joe who had to pay an insane £33 to watch that.

townfan: well said. I hope that anyone who comments in your post will do so in the same constructive manner you have.

I really hope that this season picks up but you can see how Warnock has taken almost no time to get his team playing the way he wants so why are people constantly saying Keane needs more time? After all, QPR were in a worse state when Warnock took over than we were when Keane took over.

I would just like to see us show that we have any tactical nous at all, and at the moment it's not looking like it

TractorRoyNo1 and Camblue - well said on that brave para. I had a lump in my throat watching them go around the pitch at halftime. Seeing him battle back from near-fatal injuries really DOES put things in perspective. All overpaid prima donna footballers (whoever they play for) should take a long hard look and see what a REAL hero looks like.

O well 1 game lost all season is a start i was looking for outta 8 games, QPR were quality and will be there or there abouts! Keane's job now is to get their heads up agen and get them training harder than ever in preperation for cardiff. Hopefully we can get 3 points saturday. If not then yeh we have been beat by the 2 promotion candidates this year n wud be dishearting but i aint guna start saying were Crap n keane out n all that coz we have had a gd start and i think we can be top 6 this season even if we do lose. Ill be right behind them as ever throughout the season both ITFC! and Keano!

Morning GITS (copyright B Smallpiece 2009). Hurrah for the TownFan! Who can argue with his/her reasonable view? Last season Town had an exceptional start. This season they have had an exceptional start of a different kind. But it is difficult to see the final outcome in May next year being any different to this year's. I no longer have a season ticket and watch from afar. The idea of paying a pile to endure the poor quality on offer sticks in my craw. Enriching a shifty ticket tout owner or a talentless, dull manager doesn't do it for me. I will not go back to PR so long as the present ghastly regime remains in place. FORK! POMS! COYB!

Smallpiece disappear back off to the EADT forumthe only time you pop up there is to give your excetnric, difficult to understand view and always after we loose not after we win!!! yesterday was awful and i will be the first to admit i walked away before the end, however i am not to proud to come on here and sing the praises of the lads when they do play well, you however come on with your snide comments only when the team has lost - not suprised you dont have a season ticket, your not really a 'fan' after all.

I think reality has finally sunk in on a few of our fans who thought our great start was a promotion push ,we have a very limited squad ,no real attacking full backs who have played in that position for playing three in midfield and still very little creativity the same as last year in my opinion . Last week i said it will be interesting to see if we can live with QPR and Cardiff and was slated by the daydreamers for only wanting to live with them !!! Warnock got his signings in early summer has moulded a team and added depth in his strikers ,and is tactically way ahead of Roy and we were horribly outclassed at home as we were by Newcastle this time last season . Hopefully it will be a blip but lets get our feet back on the ground and realise how far we are away from the top sides and try and enjoy the season ,if anyone had told us we would be fifth after 6 games at the start of the season we would all have probably have taken it . Cardiff are there for the taking lets hope we turn up

I find it very naive of people when I read comments like “where were you when we were doing well before the game”. OK, result wise we had a good start, but we're not playing well, nor are we playing good football. Football is about winning and I would be amongst the few that say winning is everything and how you do it is irrelevant, but we're doing neither. We were going to get found out eventually and last night happened to be that. We may go and beat Cardiff on Saturday, but all that will do is paper over the cracks. It's about what's going on off the pitch, in the dressing room and on the training ground. This then reflects the crowds attitude. There was no atmosphere last night and the reason for that is because we're not inspired by poor quality, lacklustre football.

Inter Milan don't play the most attractive football ever, but they cleaned up last year by playing the game the simple way. Arsenal play awesome football, but you talk to the majority of Arsenal fans and they will all say they'd give anything to see them do what Inter did last year by not playing the Arsenal way. Keep the ball, movement, organisation, quality and discipline. It's not hard!! We have been playing the same way since the start of last season and anyone who can say the FOOTBALL has improved since last year is either watching a different team, or kidding themselves. Yes the start has been better in terms of results, but in this league you have to perform week in week out and have an imagination, tactical knowhow and quality. I'm afraid to say that other than two or three (Connor, Grant, Norris) we don't have any of that.

Screaming Keane out and booing does no good for anyone, but there has to be a time where either the fans and or the board members say this club isn't moving forward. Warnock has been at QPR 5 minutes and they look the nuts. To say they will be there and there abouts come May is accurate, to say we will is hopeful and I don't want to pay £33 for hopeful! In a recent survey, we are the third most expensive club to go and watch in the entire UK (Just to be sure, that includes the Premier League). Go figure!

townfan about the ticket prices oh they should be dropped much lower than they are even if we was top of the league and won every game i still say the prices were a disgrace so yes they should be dropped.

I do think your overreacting a tad it's only one bad game ain't it no need to press the panic button just yet

"Football is about winning and I would be amongst the few that say winning is everything and how you do it is irrelevant, but we're doing neither" town fan understand your disappointment but isnt the above statement slightly off the mark? we were unbeaten until last night? I too was really disappointed but other games i have been impressed with the football played, maybe thats against poorer teams, maybe we now know how far we are from the best but i do believe you have gone very slightly ott with your comments. That is my own personal oppinion, may not be the right one, but its mine!

townfan lol i left at 75 mins last night and thats a first so i think we are all allowed a little ottness when you witness such an awful performance - its hard to believe that team could ever play well, yet they have proved otherwise! I just think they came out afraid of QPR we were defeated before a ball was kicked, why who knows? maybe 19,000 quiet fans compared to 900 noisey ones didnt help, even QPR took the P right from the outset!

The annoying thing for me is ,after a poor performance by the team ,not just an individual, we get statements from RK saying ''we didnt turn up'' and the likes, that is a motivation issue ! and who should be motivating the team [if just the thought of beating another team isnt good enough ] surely that must come back to RK .I am hoping this is not the start of a slide and we can shake Cardiff up but when you lose playing poorly doubts start setting in .

seen a few posts slatting jason scotland from last night, can't understand why, he did what his role in the team - hold up the ball and win flicks, obviously goals would be great but you're never going to with ipswich if u play 4-5-1, norris tried his best to get up but just couldn't. when we actually had the ball on the floor, we looked dangerous and threatening when actually playing football!! against a very very good QPR side, and obviously we didnt rise up to it.

have a bet with a mate who's going to score first the next goal.. nugent or priskin, coukld go on for a while if priskin is playing left wing :s

Yeah Vulcher, they look like they will win the title, and with the money we've spent we should make the play offs but on last nights evidence we won't. I don't mean to moan at you personally but there is too many people on here who only comment when we lose, hence the 70 odd posts on here today compared to the 30 odd for the other unbeaten games this season.

As I was saying about people who only comment when we lose, Welcome back ChambersM, Zippy and Suffolksam, you have been strangely quiet so far this season, now we have been beaten (ok well beaten, and played awful) you suddenly come to life. Come on fella's, knock the team when we play badly by all means but at least praise the team when they do well eh?
