Keane: Silly Five Minutes Cost Us
Keane: Silly Five Minutes Cost Us
Tuesday, 19th Oct 2010 22:49

Boss Roy Keane blamed a silly five-minute spell just before half-time for the Blues’ 2-1 defeat at Watford. Town conceded goals from Stephen McGinn and Marvin Sordell shortly before half-time, the Blues having shaded what had been a tight game up to that point.

Keane said: “A silly five-minute spell in the first half has cost us. Like on Saturday, the first goal was particularly disappointing and to concede the second just on half-time was a big blow for us.

“Second half I thought we responded pretty well, we knew if we got a goal back we’d have a chance and I think the players deserved a touch better than what we got tonight. Our second half performance was very good, our first half performance wasn’t exactly poor.

“But they were two poor goals to give away, although having said that I’d give the boy credit for the second, that was a good finish.”

Keane was pleased with the way his team started the game after the recent habit of beginning matches slowly: “Jason and Tamás had some half-chances and generally there wasn’t much in the game.

“At half-time we’d have taken that with the way our season’s panning out with us better in the second half. The first goal was disappointing, but then the second one more so.

“You go in at 1-0 and you’re still in with a chance. We could have done with scoring a touch earlier but I still thought there was plenty of time to get an equaliser and we nearly did it, but as you all know, nearly never made it.”

Keane confirmed that keeper Márton Fülöp missed out due to a back injury he has been carrying since going away with Hungary and could be a doubt for Saturday’s game at Nottingham Forest.

Hornets boss Malky Mackay was happy with his side’s second home win of the season, a victory which has taken his team to third in the table: “It was really pleasing to get three points at Vicarage Road, get another win under our belts and it was especially pleasing after the performance we put in on Saturday at Portsmouth.

“With the way we went down there and applied ourselves I was disappointed we didn’t get something from the game, so to come here tonight against a good Ipswich team who have been flying high and come out with a result, I’m delighted.”

YOU HAVE TO BE BRAVE KEANO!

Let teams worry about us, we have enough about us to scare the hell about most in this league but we worry not conceding first!

ITFC Cromford I'm no keane-lover but I feel compelled to say something here (not purely aimed at you)

All the fans criticising Keanes team tonight are probably the same ones moaning about the 4-1-4-1 on Saturday, so he changes to be more agressive against a team with a poor defence and yet people still say he got it wrong! All this stick he gets actually makes me feel slightly sorry for the man. I.e. A guy on radio suffolk seriously moaned at him for continuily starting priskin but i think im right in saying this was the 1st time priskin started since he scored against millwall in the cup?

Im the 1st to offer constructive critiscm but this sounds a buit extreme for a game we dominated in parts?

I'm not criticising the formation, just the player selection. True, we dominated parts of the game this evening but only really once Edwards and Wickham came on - players who in my view should have played from the start.

well done George Burley for bringing Narch to ground, sounds like Owen Garvan absolutely ruled Carrow Road tonight.

As a staunch Ipswich supporter living in Canada and visiting Ipswich again I was really looking forward to attending the Coventry and Watford games.
Unfortunately both games were disappointing notwithstanding a brighter 20 minute spell in the second half against Watford. In that game of note:
We lacked width...too much bunching and inadequate options for the player in possession to pass
Poor marking for both Watford goals.
We don't really play football..far too many ineffective long balls
4 centre backs didn't work
Priskin?
Ipswich support was terrific...but a couple of Keano sort it out chants should be heeded.

Keano needs to start realising that home and away we need to start with two strikers, wickham and Scotland. We really showed in the last 20 minutes of the game tonight that with the right players on the field we can pass the ball around teams and stop the long balls, Scotland was a different player when wickham was beside him. Connor will chase chase chase meaning that Scotland doesn't have to do all hard work on his own and can concentrate on getting into the right positions as he has for the 4 or 5 goals he has got already this season. Tommy smith looked lost at left back, got caught by there winger everytime, why didn't he play Jamie peters??

On a more positive note though Ronan Murray looked good when he came on, looked sharp and wanted the ball. Great support again, looking forward to saturday

bbtrade7 is right about wickham and scotland playing together. Priskin again looked uninterested. Smith had a mare tonight!

How we can play 4 naturally central midfield players in one lineup seemed beyond me. Colback showed how reliable he is and will fit right in, but not wasted out wide.

Tonight was disappointing, a good start ruined by a mad couple of minutes with two stupid goals conceded. Wickham coming on changed the dynamics of our game but it took us about 60 minutes and Gareth Mac to make a wide run for most or our team to wake up. Only plus side for me really was the cracking away support again.

4 centre backs, 4 centre mids. Tells you what you want to know really. I'm afraid keane has had long enough now to prove himself, and he is in-fact a clown. It was a joke tonight. I was hoping to say keane you're a lucky man tonight when we got the equalizer, but no. It was a f*cking joke!

I am sorry, but i feel i have to say something.
As an avid support of the blues i am always interested in the views of those that go to away games, as i rarely get a chance to go.
I would like to say that i get totally fed up with the constant battering of the manager about whatever went wrong.
Im not stupid. I realised that we lost!. I can see that the manager has picked 4 CB's and 4 CM's in the same team. I want to know more about how each performed. We all would make the best manager for the club (fact)!, but at the moment Mr Evans and Co have chosen the Manager of my football club, so I will support him in everything he does, cos if i dont, then i may as well go and support Naarwich!!. Now Please just stop your whining. We are all bitterly disappointed that we lost, and it depresses me also, but keep you moans to yourself, please.

msmlsjones - whilst you raise a good point about wanting to hear about individual performances, I think you're missing the point about the whining and 'battering of the manager'. As you say, you've only seen the result, you didn't attend the match.

It's very different for those who have travelled to Watford, paid £25 for a ticket and then get served up with a team selection that is flawed from the start. I think we have every right to use this forum to moan not so much about the defeat itself but more about the manner and inevitability of the defeat.

As it happens there were also positives - Wickham looked strong and Shefki-esque in his chasing, Scotland was better with Wickham than Priskin and we looked good when using the channels in the second half.

For what it's worth...

The simple fact is that Brown and Smith are not good enough to play at full-back in this division, they struggled defensively and offered nothing going forward. Livermore, Leadbitter and Norris all seemd to want to play the holding role, and there was a 20-yard no man's land between the midfield and Scotland. Priskin found new levels of laziness and is clearly not fit to wear the shirt.

Credit where it's due, MacAuley and Delaney were solid enough, Scotland was at least prepared to run at players and Murphy looked pretty comfortable. But until the introduction of Wickham and Murray, we looked like a side devoid of passion and ideas.

If we've reached that point in the season already where we're realiant on the younger players to provide the spark, then let's see more of the likes of Murray, Wickham and Hyam (and the loan kids too) and a lot less of the shirkers like Priskin who are seemingly only interested in the pay cheque.

msmlsjojnes if you want the game report rather than moaning go onto the match report section and read them .As for not moaning i did a five hour trip to watch a team that had all the flair players or players with pace that we possess in the squad Peters ,Townsend ,Edwards ,Wickham not playing i then sat through a half in which we didnt have a shot on target whilst concedeing another two whilst playing a defensive formation ? Keane needs the first half in every game to get his formation right or his player selection and it is costing us every week .Young manager learning doesnt cut it either as Boothroyd and Mackay have less experience and a lot less budget spent on their teams and are average championship sides and we should be better ,simple as .Keane needs to select his strongest team and play it regularly and stick with players who may have a bad game not drop them after every mistake like he did last year .Leadbitter has been poor all season and has played every game ?
Get Connor in a give him a decent run in the side alongside Scotland and stop worrying about other teams so much as apart from the top two it is a very average league and we should be taking games to the opposition as QPR did when they came to us

Msmlsjones - ignore the relentless negativity. We could easily have come away with a point or won last night. The two in two minutes did for us - and it felt very unfair to go in 2 down at half time having had so much of the play.
We WERE too narrow, Tommy DID have a torrid time at left back, Livermore didn't show enough, but we were otherwise okay. Scotland covered loads of ground, Priskin chased around a lot - but we were better when Wickham and Murray came in, especially.
There is a lot of panicking in here. We deserved a point at least and we should have been pleased with that, away to a decent team, in good form.

Im no anti-keane fan, but im afraid I can't see the sense in playing Centre backs at full back and central mids on the wings. I can understand going to Watford and wanting to play tight and play for a point as it's actually not an easy place to go. They're 3rd in the league for crying out loud! They must be doing something right!

But playing that team is just weird. Too narrow, inexpierienced players out of position (Brown and Smith are CB's and rookie ones at that!) and the main problem ,maybe, of Colback, good player as he is, does seem to have the side built around him for some reason.

HOWEVER...

I can't stress enough how angry I felt when people came onto the forum last night and started bleating crap like 'I don't mind losing at the moment as each loss brings Keane closer to the sack'

Thats bullsh1t, for two reasons.

1. This is my club and any defeat hurts me and it should do to any other supporter. Where is the sense in paying money to watch the team, saying how happy they are that we've lost, then moaning about wasting money?

2. This time last year we still hadn't won a game. This year we're two points off the play-offs and four off from third. If Evans and Clegg didn't want to sack Keane last year, what makes you think they're going to sack him now?! What we should be doing is just hoping for promotion this year. If we get it with Keane, the man's done his job. If we don't, as he say's, he'll be out of here in 6 month's.

Where does that leve us then?

New manager comes in and tears up the squad and we start the whole lot all over again, just as we did with Jim, and just as we have done with Keane, which means we have ANOTHER 2-3 years of average mid table football.

Then there's the man who would take over. Who's out there available at the moment who you can say 'Im glad he's our manager.' ?

Mowbray - Pretty football but almost took Celtic to 3rd in the joke - I mean jock league?

Strachen - 2009 'I don't need this job but i'll take it anyway.' 2010 ' That job was torture even though I had loads of money to spend!'

Coppel - Retired from football full stop.

Im not saying Keano is the answer. All im saying is be careful what you wish for....

why do people complain about the moaners on here? surely we all have the right to complain especially as most are paying customers and more than anything makes the whole reason of us having this site? were not gonna all sit here after every match and say 'jolly good show' despite being thumped! so respect others opinions instead of turning on them and maybe some should take off their Keane tinted glasses....the last 2 matches Keano has got it wrong...FACT and to say we moan with one up front then when he puts 2 up front we moan again...2 things...Keane shouldnt change the formation due to fan pressure he should change it to match the game and does it normally work playing one up away and two up at home?.....and before i get moaned at for moaning.....I have supported for 36 years....22 of them have been consistent season tickets at the highest price...so I have earned the right!

First and foremost I am not going to get on Roy's back. We are still 8th and doing better than last year. But yet again we failed to take our chances and LOST a game of football. Saturday demonstrated to me that we are a average side. But there are many average sides in this league. If we keep having a 'mad' five minutes, conceed sloppy goals AND fail to score it will be a receipe for disaster. We need a striker - badly. What disappoints me more is the lack of goals/shots in the first half of a match. We can't expect to play for 20 minutes and win.

Just think before the game Watford and us were sitting together in the table, now Watford go 3rd and we go down to 8th., what a difference 3pts. make.
I wonder if marcus evans went to the Watford game? because I did not see him at the Coventry game. So come on Keano sort it out because we certainly need the win at Notts. to try and make up some lost ground. COYB !!!!
A few weeks ago keano was in contention for manager of the month, and most people were saying what about extending his contract, and now you hear a lot saying Keano out. WHAT A FUNNY OLD GAME FOOTBALL IS. talk about a game of 2 halves.

muhrensleftfoot added 08:59 - Oct 20
The problem is obvious, but the solution is not so easy. We don't create enough chances, & even when we do create chances, we don't put enough away. We need creativity in midfield - our current crop of midfielders are all hard working 100 percenters, which you need in all sides, but we need someone with a bit of guile too. Up front Scotland is the only one that can finish, but he needs balls to his feet in the box. Keane needs to find another poacher on loan (a bit like we got Jeffers a few years ago) and also someone to feed Scotland with anything other than high balls. When we went 2-0 down last night & last saturday, there was no way we were ever going to get anything, but remember the Joe Royle years when we always had a chance even if the defense let a couple in.

Chambers do me a favour and do one.

As for tonight, i was a surprised as any with the selection. Tommy Smith at Full Back? Never. Edwards and Townsend dropped? Why? Agreed Leadbitter should be dropped now as much as i like him as a player. Well, we got the 2 up front!

Townsend, Colback, Norris and Edwards across the middle. O'connor at full-back on Saturday. No exceptions. 4-4-2 and take the game to Forest who are beatable at home.

yes punch bowl but some only ever go to HOME games when we are wining and at only home games so some shouldnt really moan i agree that everyone is a paying customer but they only pay when we are doing well.

well i belive we lost the game last night in the first half last night because of keanes selection, who picks 4 centre backs and 4 centre mids to play against a team who we havent beaten in 10 and who havent lost in like 8 games. but putting 2 up front was the right idea from keane but it was a shame it was the wrong 2 wickham and murray for thw win.
