Keane: Priskin Deserves a Chance
Keane: Priskin Deserves a Chance
Thursday, 28th Oct 2010 09:54

Town boss Roy Keane says he can see why striker Tamás Priskin frustrates some supporters, but feels the Hungarian deserves to be given a chance, the 24-year-old having scored his fourth goal of the season in Tuesday’s 3-1 Carling Cup victory over Northampton.

Keane said: “Tamás scored again and he scored an important goal at Millwall for us. I know he has his critics, but you have to give the boy a chance.

“I think he’s the type of player who can frustrate fans because of the way he sometimes runs and his body shape and because he will try stuff.

“Even against Northampton he was trying stuff on the edge of the box and that takes bravery, particularly from an attacking player. I thought he deserved his goal and he earned it with his workrate.”

The Blues boss was delighted for all three of Tuesday’s scorers: “I think the goals will do the three lads the world of good. We’re always expecting more goals from Carlos but when he scores they’re usually decent ones.

“Damien has been out for a long time, going back to his ankle injury at Forest last season and then his bad dead leg in pre-season.

“That will do Damo the world of good. In an ideal world I probably wouldn’t have wanted to have played Damo because we’ve asked him to put in a good shift over the last week or two.

“And Tamás, strikers obviously enjoy scoring goals. I’m pleased for the three individuals.”

Keane was less happy to lose Connor Wickham to an ankle injury suffered in training on Sunday, which will keep him out for a fortnight: “I’m disappointed because everyone was expecting Connor to be involved against Northampton, but that gives other boys an opportunity.

“However, it shows where we’re short. If any of our other attacking players had picked up an injury, if something had happened to Tamás or Jason, we would have been bringing on young Jamie Griffiths and we brought on Ronan Murray.

“That’s where we’re at. People think I’m all doom and gloom, but if you watched Cardiff the other night and saw their attacking options, we’ve a long way to go, which is why we have to keep our options open as regards bringing in another loan player.

“But I take my hat off to the players, I enjoy working with them, although we’ve a long way to go. I keep comparing us to the QPRs and the Cardiffs and we’re way behind these teams. People need to realise that and some don’t. But I’ll keep arguing my corner.”

The Blues boss says he is working on persuading owner Marcus Evans to release the funds to allow him to add the players he's after, both on loan and on a permanent basis when the transfer window reopens: “I think there’s a knack to that, it’s part of a manager’s job. We lost a lot of players over the summer, although we all appreciated that we had to tighten the squad up.

“I think we need some players but we need to be hanging in there [close to the play-off zone] until January, however January’s a long way away. I think everyone appreciates we’re short but when you start the season OK like we did, everyone thinks things are sweet, but they’re not."

Keane hints that the Blues may have missed out on potential loan targets: “We’ve seen Leicester and other clubs sign one or two players when we were probably sniffing round them, but there are often big, big loan fees and obviously the club has got to make financial decisions, and I agree with most of them.”

Meanwhile, Town will definitely face Premier League opposition in their quarter-final of the Carling Cup with Arsenal, Aston Villa, Birmingham, Manchester United, West Ham, West Brom and Wigan the other sides in the hat when the draw takes place on Sky’s Soccer Saturday from 12.15pm.

Been saying this since he signed - never given a fair crack of the whip! Give him 3 starts with Scotland!

Makes lovely runs and a very clever player but shows no aggression which is vital in this league. Has missed several chances when he has made decent positions for himself. I so want him to be successful but have my doubts.

Then play him Roy! He has simply improved everytime he has played. We are in a lull so play him and Scotland together for the next 3 games and I bet he'll shine.

Keane's perceived lack of attacking options stems from his sale of Jon Stead which precipitated our slide down the table. I don't buy that we had to sell him, Keane sold him at Sunderland and clearly didn't like the guy. Stead's been in fine form for Bristol City and we replaced his energy, which is needed when you're the lone striker, with a completely different type of striker in Jason Scotland, who has been a resounding failure in the 4-5-1 formation. How many more lives does Keane get before it's game over?

Yep I think he needs a good run in side , personaly I been impressed with him ok he's not been banging them in but at least he's getting into scoring positions and having ago and what alot of people don't see is his off the ball work which also creates chances for others .
And before the suicide mob start saying it was only northampton the other night remember who they knocked out the round before !!!

The only things that have stopped priskin being top scorer in double figures are the wingey fans and the manager. I'm amazed at priskins patience, maybe his english isnt good enough yet to bollock Keano! He is a tall, strong, aggressive player with a lot of flair and skill. Oh....lets put him on the bench.....great!

I think Priskin would partner Wickham the best (Wickham handling aerial duties) but hey ho that can't happen at the moment. He's scored 4 so far in a disjointed start. That's pretty good. What option do we have, but give him a run in the side working with Scotland.

Completely agree - Priskin and Scotland looked good together - surely between these two and Wickham they can get 40+ goals??

Sorry to disagree with RK, but I think he's got this one the wrong way round. I've never been frustrated with Tamas, but I wouldn't blame Tamas for being frustrated with RK.

After we sold Jon Stead, RK threw over our only fully fit striker (who was just beginning to hit his stride AND scoring goals) in favour of a new signing who looked desperately short of match fitness, and a raw 17-year-old who was rushed back from injury.

If RK thinks Priskin deserves a chance, give the lad a proper run in the side (and play him through the middle, not as a wideman as he has in the past)

Thats a cheap shot coming from Roy the one who has never given him a decent run in the side .

totally disagree, priskins been a complete waste of money so far especially when you think we got rid of jon tead for him.

he never makes runs, never puts any effort in, never jumps, never scores... crap player.

Strikers need to play together on a "regular" basis to build an understanding..ie,more than 1 game Roy before changing the formation over and over..for some reason this is an idea which you continually fail to grasp and probably the reason our top scorer had 8 goals last year.

brendanh..I don't think Scotland's been a resounding failure,4 goals since he got here has been a decent return..the guy needs better service..he played as a loan striker for 2 seasons at swansea and scored 50 goals...then again,Swansea play much better football than we've been churning out over the last 18 months.

I think Tamas is lacking great delivery from our recent lack luster midfield, if you give a player like Tamas great delivery then he will thrive, you notice how great the delivery from Leadbitter was on tuesday for our 3rd goal, some of our set pieces have been very poor. But I agree Give him more chance in the squad and he will grow in confidence.

I think hes a good player, i just dont think he suits Keanes style, he would suit passing sides like Crystal Palace and Doncaster where he gets the ball at his feet, thats where hes dangerous. He's proven himself with the little game time hes given with some nice touches and is able to slow the game down, when were winning that is. Prisking and Scotland upfront and Livermoor and Colback as CM's to give them some chances.

UP TOWN!

Complete waste of money , if he is good enough play him , he isn't good enough hence the fact that stares you in the face..his appearance to goals ratio and the speed with which he went out on loan , and what did he do whilst he was out on loan ????.
I was a huge backer of Keane ever since he was brought into the club. But the longer it goes on the more I am convinced that this bloke is not the man for Ipswich Town. I would even go on to say that I don't think the bloke has a clue what he is doing or if he can even remember what he said . Time to go Roy...

under_the_sun, you obviously weren't there on tuesday, when he was brilliant. Chased everything, got stuck in, had some brilliant touches and flicks and also scored a good, brave header. If he plays like that every game, he'd be a great player. He just needs confidence and the support of us fans.

No wonder people thought Priskin was good the other night. I would expect a 1.7m player to look good against some tin pot side that is 52 places below us and is basically propping up the entire football league. We will see the real Priskin against Millwall - trust me !!!

Oh, have I been wrong about Priskin have I ??? He was so good even Keane shipped him out on loan last year and is barely playing him this season. Crap player - end of story !!!

He compares us to QPR and Cardiff but QPR are one of the richest clubs in the world and Cardiff are taking a huge gamble, I wouldn't be suprised to see them in administration if they don't win promotion and with a few injuries that's definitely a possibility, I don't want Marcus Evans playing roulette with our club like Cardiff have.
