Keane: Players May Have to Be Sold to Fund New Signings
Keane: Players May Have to Be Sold to Fund New Signings
Saturday, 18th Dec 2010 08:47

Manager Roy Keane says he’s yet to speak to owner Marcus Evans and chief executive Simon Clegg about the club’s January transfer plans. Clegg has confirmed that there will be money to spend, but the Blues boss has not ruled out players moving on to fund new additions to the squad.

Keane said: “I’ve not had that conversation yet. It might depend on moving one or two players out, maybe that’s what we have to do next.

“I don’t think our squad is strong enough at the moment, particularly with the one or two injuries we have, but it’s also a case of having to make changes, changing certain players.”

The Town manager says plenty of other clubs will also be looking to similarly shake up their squads: “We need to freshen up, but I think every club will be saying the same. It’s only the big boys who have been able to strengthen their squads in the summer. I think they are the only clubs who will be reluctant to do anything in January.

“A lot of lower Premier League clubs and Championship clubs will take that opportunity to mix things up a little bit.

“Whether it’s getting one or two more loan players in because we have to make decisions about the players who are here on loan, but clearly we need more of a goal threat in the team. We haven’t got that.”

Speculation regarding the future of Connor Wickham, the club’s most saleable asset, has continued in recent weeks with Simon Clegg dismissing claims of concrete bids having been made at last week’s AGM, but conceding that all players have their price: “There are no offers on the table for Connor, there is a lot of speculation, a lot of hot air out there. Roy and myself are clear that we’d like to retain him, as indeed is the owner.

“But you may get to the point in the future where the offer for the player is considerably in excess of the value that we place on him as a club and financially it would be wrong not to take that.

“If you find yourself in that situation, you would expect that money to be reinvested to replace that particular player as that would be a huge loss for the team and that hole would need to be filled.”

Meanwhile, Bermuda U20s head coach Gary Darrell says Town winger Reggie Lambe is "not likely" to be able to join up with his squad for a Caribbean tournament over Christmas. The 19-year-old will be needed at Portman Road as cover during the busy period of festive fixtures.

I'm surprised that Keane isn't having conversations about January transfers.

Other clubs will have plans well under way.

The thought of Keane having more cash to spend is pretty underwhelming, to do it with no plan in place is terrifying!

More loans eh? I can't wait! That policy has worked so well for us so far!

Why do I have the feeling that RK has identified some more utterly unrealistic targets again? And who exactly is he planning to sell to raise money if not CW?

i know, lets tell everyone we may need to sell players - that ought to ensure we get over market value offers for them!!!

January is two weeks away, WHY have the club not had conversations about the plans for the transfer window?! It seems very amateur to me.

There is one change we must make: bring in a manager with a strategy!

Wickham will go and I get the feeling that Townsend and Livermore will become Town players,
Livermore will never get in the Spurs side and feel Townsend would be the one they would like to keep but would be prepared to let go to land Wickham.
Fallon will sign as Plymouth need cash, Zuvierloon loan will be extended as will Colbeck. O'dea will go back

Chopra will be the target so we dont miss Wickham so much
At the end of the season there will be at least 10 of the 21 players out of contract and allowed to go, and we will be back to trying to sign players over the summer just to end up starting the new season saying the squad is too small and we need some experianced players.

We should be looking to get one or two new players to strengthen the team and the same again at the end of the season with letting go some of the fringe players (Quinn Healy etc) not doing another re build

Hang on, we are the 18th december and Roy has no idea if he is allowed to sign players in January? Not even had the conversation?

Surely that can only mean one thing!

I just wish he could manage a football club as well as he flaps his jaw. He says players may have to be sold but there again maybe they won't. It's just talk, talk for the sake of it.
On second thought forget about it Keane JUST GO and GO NOW.

I have it on good authority that the reason Livermore is frozen out is because we have no chance in signing him after his loan period so Kean doesn't see the point in playing someone he has no chance in signing, On the other hand, the likes of Townsend,Colbeck and Fallon are all potential signings and we have a good chance of adding them to an already expensive wage bill in January - end of season.
It's not all one way traffic though, Everyone thinking that Tottenham are the club leading the chase to sign and interested in Conner Wickham are very much mistaken. I think you'll find that if Roy Hodgson keeps his job at Liverpool till January then a £10 Million offer will be coming in for him, It was almost done in the summer but Conner isn't stupid and wanted first team football. Well that wasn't promised to him at that stage and he stayed put but since then Liverpool have raised the cash and there not exactly flying at the minute so there now prepared to 'Splash the cash'

You heard it here first! "Conner Wickham will be a Liverpool Player either in January or end of season"

Comments like these are made merely to prepare us for what is now looking inevitable; ie the sale of Connor Wickham. At this point in the season when, as RK states every team will be looking to see who would be available to improve their squads, we have precious few players who would have a sale value. For sure Norris & McCauley who, we are told we definitely want to keep. Fulop & Leadbitter possibly, even Scotland but how many teams could take on their wages? Others such as Delaney and Edwards are out of contract at the end of the season so will carry a minimal transfer value in January.

Thanks Connor and good luck for the future!

Harry redknapp is a very clever manager, the reason he has let Livermore go out is to gain first team experiance. He rates him very highly if you read the Spurs website he has stated he is one for the future. WHY LET HIM GO?
Sadly our club is becoming a feeder club for the premiership,
Bent - Charlton
Dyer - Newcastle
Bramble - Newcastle
Holland - Charlton
Wright - Arsenal
Surely if we were serious then we would have kept the talent and built round them,
I know i've mentioned old players and some were sold for Admin reasons but i'm trying to make a point.
Cardiff were struggling but they didn't panick and sell all there good players, they even got a top Prem player in.....

Very Confussing to me.......

Disappointing. We sold so many players over the Summer, replacing with just a handful. Also a shame that discussions re funding have not taken place.

Agree with most of the points on here and love these debates

I know alot of Posh fans and they all said that Livermore was very average last season and of what I have seen of him have to agree.
Harry might just be saying one for the futrue to help sell him (only time will tell)
Will we miss Wickham? so far for the first half of the season I would say no (not the lads fault injurys etc) but would the cash help turn us in to possible contenders (as did the sale of Dyer) Good right back and a 20 a season man
Like Colbeck, However he need to be played in a position which suits him so could that mean Leadbitter on his way.

I think if Liverpool were to buy Wickham it would be bad for the lad as they seem to be a little unsatable at the minute, Arsenal and Tottenham would be better for his career. Only my opinion, think the lad has his head screwed on and have some good people around him so they will know what is best for the lad

Like I said just my view and maybe not correct

comeonthegoodtimes, I think you're right in some sense we are a feeder club for the premier league.

Difference though is the players you listed, wouldn't you agree that we got some very good footballing years from those players. They should SOME amount of loyalty by staying with the club (Dyer in our fight for promotion, Holland in our relegation season from the PL last time out). Plus after giving us at least a few years of service they then left for decent fees.

Yes we may well be selling Wickham come January. Granted we maybe didn't see "the best" of players like Darren Bent, but he had a couple of cracking seasons here, scored some important goals and clearly loved playing at Town.

Our current manager seems to want to build a squad of loan players and overrated players, and at the same time more than happy to shift out our best prospects. Granted he might not have a lot of say in whether Wickham stays or not, but I fear for what he would do with any of the money out of the sale.

When you speak to other football fans (Not Town fans) how many say its great to have the bulk of a starting line up, made up with loan signings. I think you'd struggle to find many.

One or two in key areas and emergency signings for injury cover.

Keane out, you can be as honest as you want in press conferences, but it means nothing until you get this club back on track and winning football games.

Man alive, Roy, you've only just put this squad together and you think it needs freshening up! Have you not heard of consistency, patience and development of players! Learn to work with what you've got, as you seemed to do so well at the beginning of the season! Is it only me or have we not done so well since you hired in the extra loanees? Townsend, Colback, Livermore - what have they brought to the club? OK, flashes of skill and potential, - particluarly from Townsend, but he hasn't turned games for us, he hasn't inspired us to victories or scored goals.

They were good before they came and were for a while afterwards, but how come we have to sitch them when they're not doing so well? I think the problem is with RK - he just doesn't seem to be able to work with players who don't naturally do everything his way all the time.

I know others have been saying this for a while but I believe in giving people time. I don't think those who were against his appointment from the start have anything to crow about - their opposition was borne of prejudice not evidence. Sadly te evidence no coincides with the prejudice and that's a potent cocktail! His time is surely nearly up.

Can only agree with Vic. This idea of constant "freshening up" just hides other inadequacies, like "consistency, patience and development of players."

Very worrying. Last season it was 'I want a smaller squad', now it's 'we need more players'. Even contemplating more loans is surely not the way to go. In all probability the windfall the club recieve from Wickham is going to be the last one we get for a good few years, and so it is vital that this money is used wisely to turn this club around and set us up for the next few seasons. It could be the bait to land a new high calibre manager. In the current situation it looks risky to be giving this money to RK. The parallels with Sunderland are starting to appear, where RK just bought more and more players, leaving them with an enormous squad, some of which they're still trying to get rid of.

Anyway, wrapping up warm for this evening, let's hope we can at least put on a decent performance to cheer everyone up a bit. COYB.

Great win today - I just love the ref and the ground staff did a brilliant job. Well done all of you.
The squad needs freshening up? Whose squad is it? Who bought/borrowed them? Got it in one - Roy Keane. Let him finish his contract [unless he has the decency to resign] and then perhaps we can get back to where we deserve to be.
