Jewell: I'm Sure Keane Will Be a Success Elsewhere
Jewell: I'm Sure Keane Will Be a Success Elsewhere

New boss Paul Jewell says his predecessor Roy Keane can still to go on to be a success in management despite his two-year stint with the Blues having been brought to an early end last week.

Jewell says he hasn’t spoken to the former Ireland skipper, who was relieved of his duties last Thursday after 20 months at Portman Road, but expects him to be back in management sooner rather than later: “I haven’t had any contact with Roy Keane.

"I understand it’s a difficult time when you lose a job and I have great respect for Roy Keane, both as a player and a man. I don’t know him that well, but as a manager he did a fine job at Sunderland.

“For whatever reasons things didn’t work out here but he’ll go on to other things and will I’m sure be very successful."

The ex-Bradford, Sheffield Wednesday, Wigan and Derby boss says he has sympathy with Keane, having been in a similar position himself in the past: “I’m not here to say that Roy Keane failed at Ipswich. It’s always hard when a manager loses his job, it’s happened to a lot of us. Great respect has to be paid to Roy Keane, certainly from my point of view.”

Meanwhile, chief executive Simon Clegg says some of the squad may have found the going too tough under the former boss: “Roy is a demanding individual and some of his players found him particularly demanding.

“At our level we were able to operate very effectively as two professional individuals, but I recognise that the training ground was totally his domain.”

Hollywoodginge - well done for a very fair post and very important that people like you help give a balanced view otherwise these forums could descend into drivel.

We have in the past at Ipswich shown that we have the best supporters in the country. We are perhaps not credited with the passion of some of those English teams that now grace the champions league but over the years we have restored some reputations of decency when travelling particularly across Europe. 10,000 Ipswich fans in the San Siro just one example. Even the Italian police went out of their way to show their appreciation, having been amazed by such friendly and good natured behaviour of the 'Blue Army' compared to the visit of other English clubs with countless mindless idiot's tarnishing the reputation of English supporters.

However I find it very sad that in recent years a number of Ipswich fans need to find a scapegoat and start vilifying individuals. Sam Parkin, Matt Richards, Andy Marshall immediately spring to mind.

Many criticised Joe Royle for not playing the Ipswich way. Magilton was constantly criticised for playing round pegs in square holes and often rumoured as having lost the dressing room. Both these managers did their best for Ipswich and eventually Jim had to go as he could not take the club further but he had three years - some fans were loyal and thought he should have been giving longer.

Roy Keane will learn from this failure and come back as a better man and manager I hope. He has not nearly destroyed this club as some have suggested. He demanded high standards and shipped out players he thought were not prepared to operate to the standards that he set. Yes he made many mistakes, but he gave youth a chance as well which ironically was stunted under the Magilton regime at the expense of journeymen like Campo and the Balkan version of Gerard.

It is unfair that Roy's legacy is labelled as all doom and gloom. We have the likes of Tommy Smith, Luke Hyam, Troy Brown, Jamie Peters, Ronan Murray, Shane O'Connor and of course Connor Wicham all been given opportunity to get games under their belts and gain valuable first team experience. Perhaps Roy was a lot closer to the "Ipswich way" than most care to give credit for.

I am however encouraged that the appointment of Paul Jewell has been met with such approval even if he wasn't the first choice of many of us.

I hope we can all now unite to help PJ get the results the terrific and fair minded supporters of this club deserve.
