Jewell: Effort and Commitment There But Players Anxious
Jewell: Effort and Commitment There But Players Anxious
Saturday, 15th Jan 2011 18:00

New boss Paul Jewell was pleased with his team’s effort and commitment but felt they were anxious when they had the ball. The former Wigan and Bradford manager’s first Town game ended in a 2-1 defeat at Millwall.

Jewell said: “There was plenty of effort, you can’t fault the commitment and effort of the players but we were just a bit anxious in possession.

“I don’t think the goal just before half-time changed the game but if we’d gone in 1-0 up it would have given us something to hang on to.”

The new manager wants his team to be more positive: “We’ve got to be more on the front foot, we’re just a little bit anxious, a little bit edgy. We’ve got more time on the ball, we’re trying to play balls too quickly.

“But I’ve had one day’s training with them, so at least next week we can have a full week and try and get some work into them.”

Jewell says tiredness may have come into the Blues’ performance in the second half in the wake of the Arsenal and Chelsea matches: “It wasn’t just Wednesday, they played Sunday as well at Chelsea and got a bit of a run around.

“That came into my consideration, but I thought they were on such a high after the result against Arsenal that they’d want to play on the Saturday.

“I don’t think the players or myself would use that as an excuse and anyway we finished quite strongly and had two chances in the last couple of minutes. The keeper made two good saves.”

The first Millwall goal was Jewell’s biggest annoyance: “We were disappointed with the timing of the first goal, in first half injury time. I don’t know whether their second goal was offside, it looked it, but whether it was, I don’t know.”

Lions boss Kenny Jackett was pleased with the victory: "Every win is a good win but the commitment of the players was terrific and I felt that despite a few hairy moments, we deserved to win the game.

"We conceded against the run of play and Ipswich are a good defensive team and they showed that against Arsenal and again against us.

"For us they were hard to break down and that makes it an even better win so I'm pleased.

"It was a key goal by Danny Schofield because we started well and had chances, but we wobbled after their goal so that goal not only brought us back in to the game but gave the players and supporters a lot of encouragement for the second half."

We have been uncomfortable on the ball the last two seasons throughout the whole of the last regime. Jewell is saying the right things. It was disappointing that we couldn't push on today and ended up letting Millwall back into it. It was always a tough fixture though and players must have been tired after Chelsea and Arsenal, so let's hope we do better against Doncaster next weekend. With the January transfer clock ticking, perhaps a signing or two would be good?!

McAuley lost out on a high ball for the first goal and Peters as so often happens was lost in space for the second. Badly need a proper right full back as as been said so many times and need some pace in midfield at the expense of Edwards. Edwards is OK but never been worth the money we paid for him and I believe he will be off at the end of the season anyway. The bloke was badly caught out just before half time after they had already scored and we should have been 2-1 down then. Just hope Jewell can turn this round but its looking serious now.

Is Paul Jewell Roy Keane in disguise ha ha

Effort and commitment but again we lost.

Paul Jewell has a lot to sort out, got to get the confidence back in to the players, decided on who he wants to keep of the 21 out of contract, Needs to sort out Norris and McAuley as they are two of our better players and then get some better players in,in the positions we are weak and he only has 3 weeks really to turn it round.

Think todays game will give him some idea of the mountain he has to climb

why are we moaning already guys and gals?
Paul Jewell has had the job since thursday. He's not going to get us top of the league and world beaters in three days is he?
Gave the man a couple of weeks to get into the swing of things. We gave Keane two blinking years, I think we can give Jewell a couple of weeks before we start moaning eh!
We've got a real manager now, lets get behind him and the team as always! COYB

This club can not afford to go down. But people need to wake up. Although I agree we shouldn't be moaning about Jewell at this stage, the club can absolutely not afford 6 to 10 games for him to find his feet. By sacking Roy the club were saying 'results are not good enough'. Few can disagree. By appointing Jewell they were expecting better ie. winning football matches. There is no point beating around the bush - we lost today and that's disappointing. Jewell needs to start strengthening this squad and quickly. He needs to start delievering results and quickly. That's why he's been bought in!!

No Blue tone. The Third division is no place to be. It might take years to get back.

Petersongoal agree totally we all say it'll take time and to get behind manager then one defeat and moaning starts. For me he got it spot on by not changing a winning team, next week though will be his team and his tactics....

It was almost inevitable after such a great result that they would lose today!

But I agree with most when they say that yes he does need the time to sort things out and get us back to winning ways and we need to be patient. But also agree this must be done quickly otherwise it will be League 1 for us.

Still some positives to take away. Another goal for Priskin will do wonders for his confidence.

The team are obviously playing to impress and I am confident results will come.

Couple of signings next week hopefully and the side will look stronger.

COYB.

Jewell has been in charge for 90 mins and the moaning has begun. Pathetic. It's been a busy few days for all at ITFC the club and new manager needs are support more than ever if we want to climb up the table. If we can play more games how we did Wednesday night we will have no problem. PJ Has shown stabilty in his first game already starting with the same 11 which is what the club need. PAUL JEWELL Is the man for this club and I really feel he will be here for years but we have to be patient as long as we stay up we can build for the future.

The problem with RK apart from his total lack of tactical awareness and inept management style, was his own EGO. Paul Jewell is doing everything right even in these early few days. He has inherited an awful squad of players, probably the worst I have seen with a few exceptions of certain individuals. He is using the perfect phsycology to get the best he can out of these players until he has had the time to sort out who goes and who to bring in. There are some good comments on this site, but many are way off the mark. Lets give him time to do just that. It has taken RK 18 months to nearly destroy our beloved club, we must expect it to take time to rebuild it to the standards we used to enjoy. Keep the faith and support the club and it's new manager.

The main thing this season is to stay up..doesn't matter how.

Then let Jewell rebuild the mess left behind by Keane in the summer.

Next season is where it all re-begins.

It's just nice having us back to being ipswich town fc once again, rather than roy keane's ipswich.

You have my backing 100% Paul.

OK we lost today...not good! BUT just look at Tamas this week after change of manager - if this transformation happens to the rest (or some) of the squad then we will climb. No more negativity please. A

Cant believe people are already biting Jewels ankles, he hasnt even had time to meet the players properly yet.We all know ,we need new players ,but give the bloke a chance ,the ink is hardly dry on his contract signiture and people are saying give him 6 games ! The fault is not his ,its the length of time that was given to Keane, i think we may well get relegated this year as a result .Jewel wasnt my first choice, there are better managers ,there are worse, but dont judge him on his first games, Keane took us into the depth we are now.
