Jewell: Effort and Commitment There But Players Anxious
Jewell: Effort and Commitment There But Players Anxious
Saturday, 15th Jan 2011 18:00

New boss Paul Jewell was pleased with his team’s effort and commitment but felt they were anxious when they had the ball. The former Wigan and Bradford manager’s first Town game ended in a 2-1 defeat at Millwall.

Jewell said: “There was plenty of effort, you can’t fault the commitment and effort of the players but we were just a bit anxious in possession.

“I don’t think the goal just before half-time changed the game but if we’d gone in 1-0 up it would have given us something to hang on to.”

The new manager wants his team to be more positive: “We’ve got to be more on the front foot, we’re just a little bit anxious, a little bit edgy. We’ve got more time on the ball, we’re trying to play balls too quickly.

“But I’ve had one day’s training with them, so at least next week we can have a full week and try and get some work into them.”

Jewell says tiredness may have come into the Blues’ performance in the second half in the wake of the Arsenal and Chelsea matches: “It wasn’t just Wednesday, they played Sunday as well at Chelsea and got a bit of a run around.

“That came into my consideration, but I thought they were on such a high after the result against Arsenal that they’d want to play on the Saturday.

“I don’t think the players or myself would use that as an excuse and anyway we finished quite strongly and had two chances in the last couple of minutes. The keeper made two good saves.”

The first Millwall goal was Jewell’s biggest annoyance: “We were disappointed with the timing of the first goal, in first half injury time. I don’t know whether their second goal was offside, it looked it, but whether it was, I don’t know.”

Lions boss Kenny Jackett was pleased with the victory: "Every win is a good win but the commitment of the players was terrific and I felt that despite a few hairy moments, we deserved to win the game.

"We conceded against the run of play and Ipswich are a good defensive team and they showed that against Arsenal and again against us.

"For us they were hard to break down and that makes it an even better win so I'm pleased.

"It was a key goal by Danny Schofield because we started well and had chances, but we wobbled after their goal so that goal not only brought us back in to the game but gave the players and supporters a lot of encouragement for the second half."

DDM - thank goodness for a 'realist'..... how do people think we are going to suddenly turn into a good winning team overnight eh? yes we wont against Arsnal, no pressure all to play for so totally differant. Mr Keane has left this team bereft on any confidence, poor tactics week in week out, changes in players all too often, its going to take a long time to rebuild the damage and we cannot start to moan after 48 hours, pathetic!

You can't polish a turd. RK has left a big fat steaming one in our fridge. Well done to PJ for finding the positives, exactly what we need right now. He's not a messiah who's aura alone transforms underachieving players into world beaters after 3 days. He will have to get rid of that turd and bring in players that can shine with a little bit of his polish. Keep the faith....

We will NOT go down and I am sure things will get better once he puts his mark on the team, I hope!

Everyone is moaning about the moaners?!? Just reading through this tread and I can't see many moaners at all and those that are seem a bit tongue in cheek.. Good to see people getting behind the manger but don't panic and jump on peoples back if they make a point about the work Jewell needs to do or the situation we are still in despite the change of manager, it's not moaning it's just realistic... He has got a lot to sort out and I sincerely hope he get the time and backing to achieve it.. Cos Keane left us in a right old state

at the end of the day you could have put Sir Alex in charge today and result still be same, you cant make a silk purse from a sow's ear as the saying go's.Jewel needs to see who will fit his style of play, see who,s committed and up to the job, BEFORE bringing in , the fact that'' window'' is open is not the reason to run around like a headless chicken getting rid or signing new players, if we miss or have missed out its because Keane stayed too long. That has made things very difficult, and puts ANY new manager at a disadvantage .

The way i see it, the way we played on wednesday against arsenal is the form of hard graft and passion we all want to see in the squad, with football the ipswich way(pass and move) we will then have the fundamentals to be a threat against teams such as millwall as in the league we are expected make more of the running and create more chances. Jewell has noticed this and is working on ipswich's passing game showing more composure on the ball therefore showing signs of improvement to the team.

with a couple of new signings in needed positions and renewed contracts of key players we will again be a force in this league next season.

Give Jewell a chance and get behind the guy! better then the keane long ball! COYB

Absolutely. Don't think I can see a single comment from someone that would be considered a genuine moan. My comment was that he HAS got a lot of work to do and what I thought he should do in order to get the best out of his squad.

Chill out people.

Not a great performance today to be honest, but always feared an "after the lord mayors show" type of reaction today.
Was in a corporate box on the halfway line and witnessed an incident with O'dea and some of their "supporters". Ball goes out for a throw, O'dea goes to get ball and one of their fans threw it away from O'dea to impress his mates.
O'dea calls him a w**ker, and they all get upset and start baying for his blood.
O'dea points for one of them to join him on the pitch several times and a couple of hundred get to their feet, gesturing and shouting all sorts of threats and obscenities at him, whilst sitting in front of big signs that say "any foul or abusive language will lead to your immediate arrest and being banned from the ground !"
This goes on for the rest of the game and after the final whistle when he walks past to applaud our own fans.
Then several of them had the gall to report HIM to their stewards !!
So might not have heard the last of this.
Incidentally, all afternoon when one of our players had the nerve to actually be in possession of the ball all you could here was cries of "f***ing smash him", "kick 'im the f***ing stand" and a lot worse besides !! Millwall fans have a well earned reputation of being ignorant violent thugs.
On to the game then; more of the same I'm afraid, players looked scared and unsure of their duties.
Mind you the new coaching team looked all at sea before the game too !
Just to finish off an unpleasant day, I witnessed Millwall fans hurling foul mouthed abuse at our players as they boarded the bus !! Shocking behaviour from shocking "fans" !!

AS little as two signings will turn this team around, you cannot seriously expect Paul jewell to turn this around within three days?

His statement is a new attitude and so will his management style be new. One of his biggest jobs is to perform a simple thing which is to restore some confidence and pride to a squad that has been down trodden by a very poor man manager.

To compare this game to previous millwall games this season is just plain stupid and i for one will not expect any serious impact on this team by Paul Jewell until at least the end of January and even then we might still struggle.

At least it is January and we have time to adjust and survive, we will not go down! Things can only improve now there has been a change as i dont think things can get worse than they were a week ago.

It is going to be very interesting to see what Formation he plays? which i think will dictate how many signings he will make. But i expect another clear out but maybe a bit more sensibly than the previous manager.

Oh, and one more thing, a lot of the Millwall fans were wearing old fashioned flat caps, (there was a bit in their program about "dockers day which urged them to buy the "official Millwall cap")
They obviously thought that they looked trendy and cool, but instead looked complete and utter kn*bs !!!!!

Norris M.O.M. today, ran his heart out and was obviously frustrated that others weren't.
Not as frustrated as Kennedy and Fulop though when they had to be pulled apart when Kennedy had a right go at Fulop for not coming to clear the ball !!!

As the team went into the second half they looked exhausted. Rigthly or wrongly why didnt we bring some fresh legs into the match earlier?

I despair! He plays the same team 2 matches running [isn't that what we wanted?]. He's had one whole day's training [strewth - we should be top of the Premiership already !!]. He's been in the job for 6 days [guess you reckon he should rest for the 7th day just as someone else we're told did]. Give the man a chance for goodness' sake. What has happened to you 'supporters'? For goodness sake stop b****y moaning at everything and anything. We are the Ipswich Town FC - we should have pride in our club and give PJ at least a month [or at the least a fortnight {?}] before we start calling for his b**ls. Sometimes I'm ashamed to be an Ipswich fan if you lot are the benchmark of what we are. Stop b****y moaning. COYB

It will take Paul Jewell time to turn this club around. Lets keep our expectations low (we are NOT in the bottom 3). If we come 4th from bottom this season, I will be happy and Jewell would have done a good job.
Get negativity off this site now,

Good for PJ for keeping the same team as Wednesday . Clearly he has not had the time to completely assess the squad in the short time he has been in charge.

I have no doubt over the next few weeks we will see the team and style of play change into his vision and i for one am really looking forward to seeing the results of his influence.

Not too surprised at todays result. It has been a busy emotional week for the players. At least they gave their all and good to see Priskin getting on a roll hitting the net again.

We'll be ok this year !

I'm sure they will not look so anxious now Keane has gone. I get the feeling they were scared of playing for him.

Bluefinger, depending on the type of turd, you can actually polish it, as proved on MYTHBUSTERS, small turds were best.

In the past RK was blamed, a lot of people said, we had a reasonable squad that lacked motivation & direction, now we have a new manager, he is not the problem, the players are!

Give the players and the manager time, we will not be relegated, STAY CALM we will improve
