Jewell: Effort and Commitment There But Players Anxious
Jewell: Effort and Commitment There But Players Anxious
Saturday, 15th Jan 2011 18:00

New boss Paul Jewell was pleased with his team’s effort and commitment but felt they were anxious when they had the ball. The former Wigan and Bradford manager’s first Town game ended in a 2-1 defeat at Millwall.

Jewell said: “There was plenty of effort, you can’t fault the commitment and effort of the players but we were just a bit anxious in possession.

“I don’t think the goal just before half-time changed the game but if we’d gone in 1-0 up it would have given us something to hang on to.”

The new manager wants his team to be more positive: “We’ve got to be more on the front foot, we’re just a little bit anxious, a little bit edgy. We’ve got more time on the ball, we’re trying to play balls too quickly.

“But I’ve had one day’s training with them, so at least next week we can have a full week and try and get some work into them.”

Jewell says tiredness may have come into the Blues’ performance in the second half in the wake of the Arsenal and Chelsea matches: “It wasn’t just Wednesday, they played Sunday as well at Chelsea and got a bit of a run around.

“That came into my consideration, but I thought they were on such a high after the result against Arsenal that they’d want to play on the Saturday.

“I don’t think the players or myself would use that as an excuse and anyway we finished quite strongly and had two chances in the last couple of minutes. The keeper made two good saves.”

The first Millwall goal was Jewell’s biggest annoyance: “We were disappointed with the timing of the first goal, in first half injury time. I don’t know whether their second goal was offside, it looked it, but whether it was, I don’t know.”

Lions boss Kenny Jackett was pleased with the victory: "Every win is a good win but the commitment of the players was terrific and I felt that despite a few hairy moments, we deserved to win the game.

"We conceded against the run of play and Ipswich are a good defensive team and they showed that against Arsenal and again against us.

"For us they were hard to break down and that makes it an even better win so I'm pleased.

"It was a key goal by Danny Schofield because we started well and had chances, but we wobbled after their goal so that goal not only brought us back in to the game but gave the players and supporters a lot of encouragement for the second half."

Jeez, how can fans be criticising Jewell already? It ashames me to read this board and to see negativity after ONE team loss. Can't understand how criticism can be levelled at him after such a short time.
Fair enough, he hasn't won a game yet, BECAUSE HE'S ONLY PLAYED ONE GAME!!!!
Think many managers have started their careers off with
Won 0
Draws 0
Losses 1
We live in the real world afterall!!!

Think we need to view some of these negative comments with a pinch of salt. Really hope PJ does well but hope we give him the time to do well. It will be interesting to have a look at this board if we lose the first 3 games. Will the daggers start to come out? I hope not.

Its been bad for so long i think some people are getting a bit paranoid, , i think it will be a close thing but PJ will save us from drop, the teams below us are not showing sign of revival and look at their goal averagesTake a deep breath calm down, rather see PJ assess the team for few games before dashing in and getting players that dont fit,for sake of it. COYB .

I am not moaning..moaning is when you expect something and it doesnt happen..
i expect nothing from this totally underwhelming appointment..

jewell wont see out his contract..
we had the chance to do something special.. Hughton or a couple of others.. we did something average..
we didnt even speak to ayone else...FACT

guentchev - another one who doesn't know the difference between 'moaning/criticism' and 'realistic/constructive comment'.
Some of you must be seeing things - I have not seen 'moaning/criticism' on here - all I've seen is concern at the team's current plight (which any decent supporter would have) and reservation as to if Paul Jewell is the right choice at this time.

THIS IS NOT MOANING OR CRITICISM - do you UNDERSTAND ??????

no wonder the players are anxious with H32 et al as supporters!
i bet they would criticise a new signing before he's even kicked a ball, unbelievable stuff here from so called fans

h32-
Jewell has the job. He is rebuilding the team and intends to make changes. We need to support him, - simple as!
Whats the point in saying "Well, we have reservations about this appointment.."
If you had a new boss at work, would you get behind him or would you go "Hmmm...I think Gavin should have got the job because..."
Thats not constructive comment I'm afraid. Jewell is now Manager of our team. Its time to support him.

H32 has every right to have reservations about Jewell. If H32 doesn't want to support the new manager, H32 has the right as a fan of ITFC to decide that. I think H32 has a good point, maybe there were better candidates for this job and by having reservations about PJ H32 is hardly moaning!
I support you in your doubts H32 and like you think a better assessment can be done in May.

how can any true fan of Ipswich Town Football Club not support the appointment of a new manager? Makes no sense to me.

H32 has RESERVATIONS, that is ALL.
One decision PJ has done already puzzles me. How can a fair assessment of Rory Fallon have been done in such a short period of time? The guy had a bad time at Plymouth but played well in every match for us and was getting better (as every fan who has been to a match can testify to). Has PJ already get his eyes on a replacement, or did he feel RF was part of the old order so had to go? Did he not fit the profile of a typical Jewell striker? Seemed a bit sudden that is all (its not a criticism), and seeing we have lost Zuiverloon,Colback and Townsend without any replacements maybe its come a bit too soon? (we have now lost 4 players without anyone coming in...)

Rkeaneisagod (please change your username) to be fair if we weren't going to sign him he'd be going back in the next couple of days anyway, and I don't think he'd have missed a game, and you're not saying PJ should have to sign him are you? He says fallon wasn't in his plans which pleases me to honest, a bit if change.

@portman23, agreed about Priskin, I have always rated him (got him on the back of my shirt, don't see many of those about :P)

He was quality for watford, their fans loved him, they didn't want him to leave!!

Let's hope he can get back in form after being managed awfully badly by Keane.

COTP!! & COYB!
