Civelli: Saturday Was a Special Moment
Civelli: Saturday Was a Special Moment
Tuesday, 8th Feb 2011 11:28

Returning midfielder Luciano Civelli says Saturday’s brief substitute appearance during the Blues’ 3-0 home victory over Sheffield United was a special moment for him. The Argentinian was back in action for the senior side for the first time in 23 months after suffering a multi-ligament knee injury in March 2009.

Civelli told the club site: "It was a special moment for me to get some minutes back on the pitch with the first team. I think the gaffer was waiting for a chance like against Sheffield to play me and I'm grateful for the opportunity.

"I have been in the squad and training with the first team since the gaffer has been here and now the next step for me is to get into the team.

"I've been fit since September but did not have a place under the old gaffer and his staff. This is a new opportunity for me and it's a good feeling to be involved again."

Civelli says he wasn't sure why he was training with the reserves group under Roy Keane's management: “I was training with the reserves and nobody explained why, nobody told me the reasons.

“It is what professional players want to do to be involved with the first team and it is not just me that it happened to.

“The new manager appreciates me and it’s made such a big difference to me and the squad I think, and I don’t see it as a coincidence that we have won our last three games.

“We all want to play, and we appreciate that it is not possible. But now we know that we have a chance. It has been a positive change to the club and I am happy to come into work.

“My head has always been strong and now I want to play more minutes. Mr Williams, the surgeon in London, did a very good job and so have all the medical staff.”

The 24-year-old, who is contracted until 2012, paid tribute to the backing he has received from Town’s fans, Portman Road giving the former Banfield man a huge ovation when he took to the field in the 89th minute on Saturday: "I would like to thank the crowd. They have supported me since I have been at the club, when I was injured and now when I am back playing again. It is good for me to have that support."

What Argentinian says gaffer - In fact who says that at all? Clearly all made up.

I have been waiting for months for Civelli to get a little time in the pitch. Since I heard he was fit I've been hopeful he'd be on the bench and then hopeful we'd be doing well enough for him to get some time on the pitch. It's been a long time coming but i was delighted when 26 came up on the board on Saturday. After such a huge set back and time getting back to fitness it is fantastic to see our new manager taking over working with Luca and having faith in him after just a month. Well done Luca I'm thrilled you're back and have a lot of faith in our PJ. The good times are here!

I think what Luca has just said sums up why so many players were backing Keane, they were scared not too! We dont have that rule by fear regime now, Jewell is a motivator, not a tyrant. I (along with most of the squad no doubt) jaguar Keane is gone so that talented players like Civelli can flourish and help move the team up the league, welcome back Luca, this really does have a good feel about it and Im sure the good times are only just around the corner!!!

Well I always thought the stuff people said about Roy was made up out of jealousy, how wrong i was. I was already feeling foolish for ever backing Roy, after the turn round in style and team spirit under PJ; but now it is crystal clear that Roy has the man management style of ... Roy Keane.
Roy was right about some of the players he axed mind you and his purchases were not as bad as we thought ... when they played under him.
Onwards and upwards. :-)

When Keane was first appointed i was excited at the thought of such a high profile name managing ITFC.
However the more i hear about the way he managed the players leaves me in total disbelief.
The man is an arrogant bully, and i for one hope he never manages again.

Training with the reserves!? What a tw@t Roy Keane is. Nothing like a kick in the teeth when you've been out for a year and a half. Jeez...

Right, can we all forget about Roy and move on? Completely fed-up reading anti Roy this, blame Roy for that. Jim has gone, Roy has gone. Lets draw a line and get behind Jewell and the players.

Welcome back Senor Civelli. Now our manager has some good healthy competition for width on the left. Mr Keane was not a lover of using wide players. Perhaps that is why Luca didn,t feature when he was fit, the same applies to Lee Martin, a revelation so far under Mr Jewell.

I am building up a picture of how Roy Keane was as a manager. I am appalled that he was paid so much to do such a bad job. A randomly chosen supporter could have done better. Why in the modern game do we assume a great player will be able to manage? He squandered money at Sunderland and the players hated him. Sunderland were promoted in spite of him, not because of him. With Keane we didn't have a manager. Now we have a manager.

great seeing luca back over the weekend, shows his character, alot of players struggle mentally after such a long injury, but he has came back and looks happy, but why he was training with the reserves i do not know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but agree with alot of other people on here, we are still seeing the removal of keane's stain on the club!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's time to move on as others have said on this forum, but a few corrections are in order

1- if they hated him so much, why did so many of them follow him to Ipswich?
2- they were rock bottom when he went there, and he took them up as champions, lots of other relegated teams have failed to bounce back
3 - always remember the first three letters of 'assume' - then 'think' of Kenny at Liverpool a great player and a great manager
