Jewell: Goals Would Have Graced Any Game
Jewell: Goals Would Have Graced Any Game
Saturday, 19th Mar 2011 18:26

Boss Paul Jewell hailed Town’s goals as good enough to grace any game after strikes in either half from Carlos Edwards and Jimmy Bullard saw the Blues to a 2-0 victory over Scunthorpe. The Blues boss felt his side should have sealed their win before half-time.

Jewell said: “They were two really good goals which would grace any game, certainly the first one was a great strike.

“In between them, certainly in the first half, we had lots of opportunities where we should have put the game to bed, but missing chances and wasting opportunities is our Achilles' heel. But it was lovely to see the goals go in.”

The Town boss said his side couldn’t take the Iron lightly despite their lowly position: “I don’t think you can be disrespectful to Scunthorpe because they’ve beaten Notts Forest and Swansea over the last month.

“This league is tough and they’re an honest bunch of players and they never gave in, but I felt we should have scored three or four goals in the first half and if that had happened we might have had a better performance in the second half when the game petered out a little bit. But, given our recent home form, if we have 23 of them next year, I’ll take them.

“I thought we went about the game really well in the first half - attacked them, got at them, got down the sides, got good balls in the box but once again weren’t on the end of a enough of them.”

Jewell said he switched his keepers in order to see Arran Lee-Barrett in match action: “Basically, we wanted to just have a look at Arran really.

"Márton’s done OK and Arran’s been patiently waiting for an opportunity and I thought I’d give him his chance, simple as that. The same with Josh Carson, I thought I’d give him a go and both of them did OK.”

The Town manager confirmed that Kieron Dyer picked up a minor knock: “Kieron got injured just at the end of training yesterday when we were doing a little bit of team play. He just felt his thigh a little bit. We don’t think it’s anything serious but obviously he wasn’t fit today.”

Scunthorpe caretaker-manager Tony Daws also had praise for Town’s goals: “At the end of the day we were defeated by two really class goals. A great strike for the first one from distance and then the second one was a bit of quality from Jimmy Bullard.

“It’s been a difficult week for the club really and a lot of credit has to go to the players today because I thought we had a really good go.

“They are obviously lacking in confidence because we’ve had a difficult season but I don’t think they could have given any more in terms of effort.”

Strange game in a way. I'll pay Portsmouth to take Norris off our hands.

Had all the feel of an end of season match with nothing to play for. If Bullard keeps this up then we won't be able to sign him as a Premiership club will surely offer Hull & Bullard more than we can.

Garv but we win far more when he is playing, the engine needed around the pretrial stuff!

An easy three points over a poor team today, both Bullard and Matin standing out for me. But as Hucks216 says, no more than an end of season game for ourselves. Just Norwich to look forward to, then we will really see what Jewell is made of. Two new strikers and the signing of Bullard (or eqivelant) is required over the summer. Don't want another season like this or the preceeding six for that matter, need some excitment of at least challenging for the playoffs next time around.

After the last three home games, a wins a win no matter how it comes. Two great goals, but again no real other threat. There keeper picked the ball out of his net twice, but had nothing else to do. Please PJ, give Shane O'Conner a run out down the left. Highlight of the day, the Jimmy Bullard song. Laugh I nearly ordered my season ticket.

With saftey all but secured Jewell should be looking at alot of players in the wings to see what he has got, he must know in his mind who is on the way out, so forget about them and move on. Delighted Priskin and Scotland were dropped.

Town won comfortably against a poor Scunthorpe side and never really turned it on. Hope I'm wrong ~ but I can't see Jimmy (first name terms!) being with us next season. If he keeps playing like this, a bigger, richer club will come in for him. We can't pay those sort of wages and I can't see him taking such a huge drop. Sorry to bring a 'downer' but I'm trying to be realistic. Let's just enjoy the time we have him in a Town shirt! P.S. What were the words to the new 'Jimmy' song today? Anyone enlighten me?

Generally agree - two great goals and pleased with three points. However, I personally continue to be disappointed with Jewell's one up front policy at home. Wickham was very isolated. Other managers have been slated for the one up front at home, so I see no argument for Jewell to play this system.

That said well done to the boys. Opposition were very very poor and we weren't helped by the ref - so at the end of the day the win is the important thing.

A good result today that sees us almost certainly safe from relegation. Well done to Paul Jewell and the team for achieving that.

I thought Scunthorpe were very poor today and the standard of football was not high, but two good strikes for the goals and a big improvement over the last two home games.

I don't like one up front either, and I am sure Jewell will change that when he signs some decent strikers. I do find it strange that we are told Wickham isn't ready yet to play up front, yet today he had to do that job alone. Surely it'd be better for him to play him with a strike partner (however limited our options are).

Carson did okay, but I too would like to see O'Connor given a chance in that left-sided midfield position as he did well there in the Leicester match and has impressed me every time I've seen him last season.

At least we got a win at home at last! Very poor opposition and we were not that special, but the goals were! Jimmy Bullard is class, McAurley as solid as usual and Martin put in a good shift. Pace and forward movement to join a lone striker still meant that the Scunthorpe keeper had almost as easy an afternoon as ALB?

Words to the Jimmy song. Sung to the tune of I love you baby.

Bullard said on radio suffolk after the game, that good times are coming to ipswich next season and he is looking forward to it. He is loving playing here and sounded very happy.

At 32 not sure a decent premier side would take a punt on Bullard. With the pace of the premier league not sure if he would play many games as he is a tad injury prone.

The way he speaks it seems that he would be happy to sign for us and as he is a wealthy man anyway why wouldnt he take a pay cut to play regular first team football.

Can only hope I suppose

It was a win against a very poor team worst have seen down here let's be honest here we just did enough but what goals especially Edwards. Lot of you on here give him so much stick but you we're same ones who had so much to say when Keane had centre halfs playing full back and they couldn't pass it or get past half way line! Now we have very good attacking fullback and it stil not right give guy a break

Wrexham Blue - Leadbetter has been awful all season. He doesn't win balls, he never passes forward and as for his dead ball ability.....well words fail me! He said the other day when interviewed he was looking forward to taking the next penalty - if he goes anywhere near a dead bull if Bullard is on the pitch then we should borrow Ashley Cole's air rifle.

One more win and Paul Jewell can juggle all he wants with the squad and formations [ I'd still love to see them win every game, boring or not ]. Like the inclusion of ALB and Josh Carson, I think we will see far more of the unepected before the end of the season, once we are definately safe. Well done lads, and quality strikes.

2crackin goals, surely we've got to sign Bullard, the way he controls the midfield is something we have desperately been lacking, nice to see PJ give ALB & JC a start, i've been saying for some while that Fulop has needed replacing, Iknow he had a great game against Cardiff, but for me he just doesn't command the box. At least we're safe now, PJ needs to start wheeling & dealing asap.
