Wickham Out to Impress for England U21s Thursday, 24th Mar 2011 09:25 Striker Connor Wickham says he’ll be looking to show what he can do on an international stage when he wins his second England U21 cap in tonight’s friendly against Denmark in Viborg (KO 5pm). A host of scouts from Premier League clubs are likely to be keeping an eye on the Blues frontman, who celebrates his 18th birthday in a week’s time. Wickham said: “Hopefully, I can go there and impress. I just want to show everyone what I can do on an international stage. “When I have been away on international duty all the coaches have praised me and pushed me in the right direction and given me advice. I am taking all the advice on board and using it to my advantage. “Even to be in the team is great and is a motivation for me. I have to push on and want to keep doing what I am doing. “To play football for England, and to win the awards I am winning, shows I have the right people around me.” The striker, who won the Football League Young Player and Championship Apprentice of the Year awards at the weekend, says he's happy with how his 2010/11 campaign is progressing after an injury-hit first few months: “This season is really going to plan. “Last season ended on a high and the start of this season didn’t get off to a great start, but it is nice to get back on track and achieve what I have this season and have the support I have got.” Wickham says he’s flattered by the constant speculation regarding his future and claims of £10 million price tags, but is keen to focus on life with Town: "To be that highly-rated is amazing. But all I can do is keep working hard on my football. I am signed to Ipswich for the next few years and I am concentrating on that. “I want to work hard for Ipswich and get them to the Premier League. Hopefully we can do that. That is the objective for me and that’s what I am focused on. “The last few years we have been there or thereabouts, but now there is a good confidence in the dressing room and we can really push on next season under Paul Jewell.” Tonight’s game is live on ESPN and the FA’s website here. England are also playing Iceland in another friendly on Monday at Preston North End’s Deepdale.
