Jewell Hopeful Wickham Will Stay at Town
Jewell Hopeful Wickham Will Stay at Town
Thursday, 31st Mar 2011 15:56

Boss Paul Jewell says he’s hopeful that Connor Wickham will stay at Town for the 2011/12 season but admits that it would be difficult for the Blues to turn down “silly money” for a striker of his calibre. The England U21 international, who turned 18 today, was again the subject of transfer speculation in this morning’s tabloids with claims that Tottenham will make a £15 million move in the summer.

Jewell said: “I’m hopeful that he’ll stay here. But at the end of the day we are at the mercy of a big club, let’s be honest with you.

“If Liverpool or Tottenham come in with money that we can plough back into the team, silly money, we’d have to listen to it. If he does go, he won’t be going for cheap."

The Blues boss hopes Wickham's top flight ambitions can be achieved with the Blues: “I think he’s best staying here and having another year here, hopefully getting us a few goals, hopefully getting us in the Premiership and then he’s a Premier League player.

“But it’s going to be difficult for any club at this level to turn down any offer from one of the top teams.

“If it was one of the smaller Premier League teams I don’t think Connor would want to go, but if one of the top clubs came in, it’s hard for them to say no. But we’re not actively looking to sell him.”

Wickham recently signed a new contract until 2013, while it’s speculated that he could add an extra year to that deal now that he’s turned 18.

Meanwhile, Jewell has dismissed reports claiming he is targeting former Blue David Wright, who is now at Crystal Palace.

conner needs to stay here. simples. alright, hes hardly set the world alight this season (no-one at ITFC has this season lets face it) but hes been in and out of a creativless team. if he goes to spurs, he'll never get in infront of gio, crouch, defoe, palvchenko, he'll play 5 games max (carling cup etc) and get loaned striaght back to the championship. if he stays he can gain more confidence, learn, be around family and freinds and actually grow up and into a football player. he's only 18 and we have him for 2 more years, absoutly no need to rush into anything

Reading Paul Jewell's statement it could have been written by an Ad-man. It says :- Come and get him, but don't expect to steal ! Call me an old synic but that's how I see it. And for a club of our standing, that''s exactly what PJ has to do. We can't expect Mr. Evans to keep shelling out millions from his own pocket when he can see there is a deal to be done, buying five players by selling one, whether it would have been our choice or not. A great shame.

Well to start ive gotta disagree with you Gary really i know 15 million is alot of money but Arsenal paid 12 million for Walcot at 17 and that young lad Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from saints has a 10 million pound bounty on his head. So for a 18 year old England u21 international and PFA Young player of the year winner i think 15 million sounds about right, So i think sell him to spurs with maybe a deal for a loan back deal for a season and buy some quality players for the promotion push, Just my opinion tho. Im shore PJ will do whats right for the club....

No brainer.
Sell to big club. Get future loan players from that club. Get Bullard. Have a big wedge left.

As a ST holder I haven't really seen a £15 mill player in Wickham so I say cash in. I am probably missing something amazing, yes only 18 and developing but............5 goals 3 of which in one game?. This does not resolve our long standing problem but 15 mill might help us. If you watch carefully when up front he does not jump to win a header, he & crowd claim a foul everytime when it isn't.............for such a big bloke he should be towering above others when jumping and winning a high percentage of headers. Sell.

Unfortunately the choice may not be the clubs if Wickham wants to go to a big club Spurs is not that far away from his home and the mentor that brought him on from a nine year old at Ipswich Mr Klug is now at Spurs (thanks Roy ).
Hopefully some good guidance will see him stay for at least another year anyway

To be honest, I would sell him for any offer over 15 million. Am I the only one in thinking that he is overrated? From what I have seen of him, he is not a world beater, nor anywhere near as good as Dyer, Giggs, Rooney were at that age. We could do so much with that money to help us get to the promised land.

Some people on here are clueless. No wonder nob ed RK said the fans no nothing....

CW has vast talent, those of you who say he is over-rated obviously can't see talent. Do you think all the top clubs employ clueless scouts???

Min price must be £15m. He will be double that in 5 years.
