Wright Leaves Blades Thursday, 7th Apr 2011 14:31
Former Blue Richard Wright has left Sheffield United by mutual consent. The 33-year-old ex-England keeper joined the Blades on a short-term deal in September, with his contract subsequently extended to the end of the season.
Wright, who was released by Town a year ago, made two starts while at Bramall Lane but was subbed due to injury on both occasions.

It is indeed a very sad story, so many great memories, not often you can call a goalkeeper a match winner but he was on so many big occasions, one save I remember was a 1 on 1 against Bolton moments before jims last gasp hatrick goal, iv never heard it mentioned since but probably a defining moment in itfc history. @fatboy I'm led to believe that arsenal paid in the region of £2mil for him, the rest of the fee was based on appearances clause for arsenal and England which he never even came close to. Best of luck Richard and thanks.

hollywoodginge - yes, the save from Jensen (as I recall) late on. I remember wondering at the time whether that might be the big break we needed. Could never have predicted what would happen next obviously but I fear 2-4 would have been goodnight! What a good night it was!!

Has earned gazillions in his career and well done to him for that. But, in the clear light of day, if he had simply stayed with us earning just £10k per week, would he have played 50+ times for England? I think so. Like so many of our ex players, apart from Bent, they have not done any better elsewhere!

Wonder if Jonathon Barnett is still his agent?

A very good confident young keeper but I think mentally he wasnt too strong to cope with set backs, expectations and injuries that came his way. A keeper without confidence regardless of his ability is going to be limited. Every keeper makes mistakes and the media are always quick to pounce and hightlight any errors at all (look at Green at WC). Richard (in my opinion) let injuries and mistakes get the better of him and he diddnt recapture his younger form and confidence.

leave the boy alone. he has had a good career, very unlucky, some bad decisions. if i was him i'd want out of Sheff Utd as they are going down. You never know whats round the corner and being free from a contract means he can move quickly. i wish him well, great player at the town, sadly though once he left he never shone the same. isnt that true of nearly all the players once they leave the town?
