Jewell Hits Back at Clark
Jewell Hits Back at Clark
Friday, 8th Apr 2011 12:49

Blues boss Paul Jewell has hit back at released youngster Billy Clark after the 19-year-old Tweeted that he was "glad to be out of there to be honest" having been given the news that his contract would not be renewed at the end of the season. First-year pro Clark, a former Northgate High School pupil, was told his Town career was over on Wednesday.

Jewell says the midfielder — and other players — ought to be more careful with their Tweets: "He didn't tell me that, if he's glad to be out of here he can go now if he wants.

"It's only a danger if you put silly things on," he added. "I don't know how many Tweeters or whatever Billy's got but instead of going on Twitter he can talk to me face-to-face."

Clark made three first team sub appearances late in the 2009/10 campaign but failed to break into the senior side this season.

Yes, fair enough he's a young lad and he's disappointed, so perhaps we shouldn't slag him off for the outburst.

But surely it must be part of the club's training of young players, in the modern footballing world, to warn them not to post private comments in public places like Twitter and Facebook - they might as well have stuck them on every lamppost in Ipswich! It's that public - absolutely anyone can see and they WILL pick up on it!

All this "attitude" stuff is pathetic and silly. What do you want him to do when Jewell says "you're not wanted"? You want him to kick off with him face to face and come out with "i didn't want to be here anyway" or whatever? Then you'd criticise him! All the kid is doing is expressing a feeling why can't footballers do that without scrutiny? I'm not condoning acts of "heat of the moment emotion" expressed by the likes of Wayne Rooney by the way. Clark isn't exactly bringing the game into disrepute is he? Give him a break. He'll get another job somewhere.

Give the lad a break, he has just had his dreams shattered and said something in the heat of the moment.

Wonder how many of the people slagging him off have ever been dumped by someone they are really keen on and said 'well I was going to dump them anyway?'

Well handled by PJ - rather silly by Clark. I suspect other clubs will be aware of this and it may scupper potential moves elsewhere. Was surprised we released Billy in all fairness, but clearly sour grapes on the players part.

Doctor_Albran it's just a quick way of saying it, innit. Most people say blackberry just as a generalisation or form of slang almost - it channels the reader into visualising a category of expensive mobile phones, without having to narrow down to a particular phone. We8Norwich is unlikely to know the specific model of phone that Clark owns after all and the sentence would have lost some of its effect had he clarified make and model. For instance:

1) "Should spend more time on the training pitch and less on his blackberry!"

2) "Should spend more time on the training pitch and less on his blackberry torch 9800!"

Imo sentence 1) has a better ring to it - the second sentence sounds too detailed and 'geeky'. We8Norwich would have alienated quite a few readers I'm sure with sentence 2). Furthermore, We8Norwich would most probably have been incorrect had he plumped for the phone mentioned in sentence 2). Clark could have an iphone for all we know. Sometimes less is more, especially when a lack of information forces one to generalise.

As far as Clark's comment goes, I'm not surprised or offended by it tbh. I'd probably try to put a positive spin on being released as well if I were in his position. Twitter obviously isn't the best form of communication for him to air his thoughts. Still, the guy was probably pretty emotional at the time (as someone mentioned earlier) and his comment could have easily been far worse. He's supposedly relieved, I'm indifferent and the club rolls forward. Honestly, the amount of rubbish that I've spewed in my time! I hope that every word I put out of place doesn't come back to bite / haunt me (although admittedly I'd be more careful with what I said on a public forum etc). This is a local lad at the end of the day, who's been with our academy for a long time now and just been released. The comment was ill-considered, that's all.

Young and stupid.... we were all like it once....give the lad a break, probably done in the heat of the moment and regretted now. How judgemental we all seem to be these days, he'll learn from this and move on I'm sure!

"I don't know how many Tweeters or whatever Billy's got but instead of going on Twitter he can talk to me face-to-face."

And instead of going to the press you could have talked to Billy Clark face-to-face Mr. Jewell.

He was responding to a comment from his mate, its not as if he said "Euurgh glad to be out of there". Put yourself in his shoes, hes just been in reserves and training without playing competitive football, which at his young age must be frustrating as he had a taste of it at the end of last year. So it may be a chance for him to go to lower league team and play some football.

I went to primary school with him and played football with him at break time and i know it was his dream to play for Ipswich and always had an Ipswich shirt on (aswell as a Liverpool one, but thats not the point) so i know he must be gutted. His comments on his facebook and twitter look more like dissapointment rather than hitting back at Ipswich, which is understandable.

This is one of the most unedifying news threads I've seen on here for a long time. For goodness sake stop picking on the kid. Next thing we'll be seeing be a footballer in the headlines for swearing or something....oh, hang on...
Come on, get a bit of perspective. Some of you are coming over like Daily Mail readers.

Upbeat, We8norwich picture is Alan Patridge and the Annoy line was one of his. I have no problem with the use of the term Blackberry, but thanks for the explanation...! lol

You idiot Clark. Footballers should be made to take some sort of IQ test before being allowed to open a twitter account. So many of them just seem to be too thick to be trusted. A case study in how not to win a contract with a potential new club. Good work moron!

Another case of a bald interweb comment probably coming across in a way it wasn't intended because there's no context or tone of voice to convey the context - BC might well have meant "I'm glad to be out of a situation where I'm not getting what I so desperately want, which is to break through into playing first team games regularly, and tho I'm sorry to be leaving I hope it proves a blessing in disguise as it might mean there's now more chance of me achieving that even if it is with another club".

He's not really had the chance to elaborate on the bare comment or explain, has he, and tho it was stupid to use that medium, it doesn't make him a bad person, - just naive/silly in not thinking ahead and seeing that it would be picked up by the 'meeja'.
