Ramsey Inducted into Hall of Fame
Ramsey Inducted into Hall of Fame
Saturday, 9th Apr 2011 08:24

Sir Alf Ramsey was inducted into Town’s Hall of Fame at last night’s players’ reunion dinner at Portman Road. England’s 1966 World Cup boss received a special merit award, as did his 1961/62 championship-winning Blues side, while six players were added to the Hall of Fame’s ranks.

Doug Moran, Andy Nelson, John Compton and the late Roy Bailey all played for Ramsey, while Russell Osman and Paul Mariner from Sir Bobby Robson’s squad joined them in the club’s Hall of Fame. Many of the ex-players at last night's event will be at Portman Road for today’s game against Crystal Palace.

The Hall of Fame was started in 2007 and previous inductees are Mick Mills, Ted Phillips, Ray Crawford, John Wark, John Elsworthy, Frans Thijssen, Kevin Beattie, Jimmy Leadbetter, George Burley, Arnold Muhren, Billy Baxter, Allan Hunter, Sir Bobby Robson, former managers’ secretary Pat Godbold, Roy Stephenson, Larry Carberry, Terry Butcher, Cyril Lea, Roger Osborne, Tommy Parker and ex-chairman John Cobbold.

I'm a bit surprised that Ramsey wasn't already there!
Good to see recognition for lots of the players from the 60's who really achieved some amazing feats.

The only annoying thing was he should have been 1 of the 1st to be inducted

Think Town's Hall of Fame lacks a wee bit of credibility. The club is defined for all time by the names Cobbold and Ramsey. Any club in the land would have the heroic Sir Alf first in a line of honour, closely followed by Bobby Robson. As far as players go, pick your own. For me Beattie, Crawford and Phillips, Thijssen and Muhren and Billy Baxter would figure most prominently.

Russell Osman in the Hall of Fame? Really?

For me significant omissions are Clive Woods, Colin Viljoen, Paul Cooper, Jimmy Robertson, John O'Rourke, Brian Talbot, Alan Brazil and Jackie Milburn, who may not have been our greatest manager but who started the youth set-up which has been one of our greatest achievements over the years.

What those guys from 1960-62 era achieved in winning back to back championships was truely amazing and will never be repeated by any in the country again. Real football legends..Ted Phillips scored 47 goals in one season that included NINE hatricks..I had the pleasure to sit amongst them at last nights dinner. Ray Crawford looks as though he is still fit enough to play for Town now! A top gent and really nice man. What would either of them be worth in todays market, when the likes of Torres sells for £50M??

How on earth did this previously work? "Right we'll have Sir Bob, Allan Hunter and Pat Godbold but Sir Alf will have to wait for another time he's not quite famous enough"

The Hall of Fame is heading for trouble unless the club can start competing for trophies again. With the exception of arguably Matt Holland, there hasn't been a player since the EUFA side of 81 worthy of sitting alongside the legends of the early 60s and 78.

@barnetttractor... it's the ITFC Hall of Fame, not a football hall of fame. Plenty of players have served the club with distinction since the 'glory days'. Stockwell... Wilnis... Stewart... Scowcroft... Forest... Wright (Richard)...

If (s)election to the HoF is going to be committee then there's always going to be contentious choices. Would like to see the club base (players') entry on number of games played. Say 250 - around 5 seasons worth. And for managers either a trophy win or a number of years/seasons service.

Then leaves just 'support staff' to be elected by the 'committee'. Bobby Ferguson and Charlie Woods surely if we're talking SBR and the players from that era?
