Town Chasing Nosworthy
Town Chasing Nosworthy
Tuesday, 17th May 2011 23:05

Town are amongst a number of Championship clubs chasing Sunderland defender Nyron Nosworthy. The 30-year-old, who spent last season on loan with Sheffield United, looks set to leave the Stadium of Light this summer.

Brixton-born Nosworthy began his career with Gillingham as a right-back, making his senior debut in 1998.

His performances for the Gills impressed former Blues boss Joe Royle, who targeted the defender when he allowed his contract at the Priestfield Stadium to run down at the end of the 2004/05 season. However, Sunderland, who had been promoted to the Premier League, won the race for his signature and the 6ft tall defender moved to Wearside instead.

Nosworthy quickly broke into Mick McCarthy’s team and made 32 appearances in his first season at the Stadium of Light as the Black Cats were immediately relegated with a then-record low total of 15 points.

The following year under new manager Roy Keane Nosworthy reverted to centre-half and became a key member of the side which won the Championship at the first attempt, winning the club’s Player of the Season award and jointly picking up the North-East Football Writers' Player of the Year gong.

The Londoner remained a regular for the next season and a half in the Premier League but his opportunities were more limited once Steve Bruce took over as boss.

Keane had by now taken over at Town and in the summer of 2009 became the second Blues manager to try to sign Nosworthy but the player was keen to stay in the Premier League at that stage of his career.

However, in February 2010 the man nicknamed Nuggsy joined Sheffield United on loan, remaining at Bramall Lane until the end of the campaign.

A season-long loan back with the South Yorkshiremen followed in 2010/11 during which time Nosworthy made 31 starts and one sub appearance before he returned to Wearside early with the Blades’ relegation all but confirmed.

The defender, who has a year left on his Black Cats contract but is likely to be available on a free transfer, qualifies for Jamaica via his father but despite a couple of call-ups is yet to win an international cap.

An experienced right-sided centre-half is very much on manager Paul Jewell’s summer wish-list with Gareth McAuley departing at the end of his contract. Nosworthy’s history as a full-back may also be an added attraction with the Blues short of cover.

Maybe we should raid Cardiff City (who must be broke after this!) for our other replacements......

Couldn't agree more. Peter Whittingham + Jimmy Bullard would be like a dream come true. As for Nosworthy I do think we need to target defenders with pace so perhaps no.

Don't often comment on players that we are linked with until things are a bit more concrete but this bloke is simply not good enough. As stated above, Blades fans think he is a liability and they should know.

Another day and another player(s) linked to ITFC. This is all becoming a bit boring.

Agree with the later postings in that it is only speculation and becoming boring. Hope potential new signings do not read this as there is so much negativity by some posters.

Hello there Ipswich fans, a Blades fan in piece here.

Signing Nosworthy would be the worst acquisition you are ever likely to make in your recent history - he really is that bad.

He is such a liability it is unreal. I would go as far to say that he was Sheffield United's worst player this season.

Also, sticking two fingers up to your own fans in an away game at Burnley doesn't help his cause either.

All the best for next season. Always respected your club - great fans in a nice, decently-sized ground.

not sure a player who got relegated from the championship is who we want

This seem a more likely purchase and ex Sunderland player that is aged 30 and can no doubt be signed on the cheap.
My real concern is that we struggle to attract any players of real quality. Danny Graham and Billy Sharp would add quality to the sides but lets be realistic as we could not even attract Charlie Austin here! There are bigger clubs in this division with more financial clout that will jump ahead of us.
I think we should be looking to uncover gems further down the league. Is it just me or is anyone else concerned with a total lack of pace and power throughout our team? Defence, Midfield and Attack is so pedestrian and we are constantly overrun.
Interesting point, we picked up a whopping 6 points out of a possible 30 against the top 6 sides!! We will soon be losing our player of the year, main defender and only goalscoring midfielder...........re-build?? more a case of destroy and start from scratch :)

I'm going to start by saying that I don't really rate Nosworthy, although we need a younger player in that mould.

However, to all those who say "Not sure a player who got relegated from the championship is who we want" like ITFC4daprem, I'm wondering if you remember a centre back that we had recently called Gareth McAuley. Ring any bells? Relegated with Leicester, picked up by Town, despite many of the Leicester fans saying he wasn't up to much. So yeah, don't judge individuals on the failings of a whole team.

ST LEDGER!!!!!! Nothing wrong with Nosworthy, however I think St Ledger is on the way up in his career, Nosworthy is on his way down.

Just putting this out here by the way, with regard to the striker situation.

What about Steve Morrison of Millwall? One very good and realistic transfer target? £2million would do it no problem with Millwall I would think, after buying him for peanuts a couple of years ago...

Bladesfan i agree. I have family in Sheffield who say that he must've dropped the team 6-7 points over the season by taking pointless risks, and that he has lost his pace. Superb a couple of years ago but terrible now. If we do get him for free, he may make some fair cover, but not someone in the first 11 of any promotion-hopefull team.

Good luck for your team too, whatever happened to them?

With Jay Rodriguez, Chris Iwelumo and Charlie Austin all up there at Burnley, what about...Martin Paterson? Going off the topic a bit I know, but strikers obviously a big talking point with town at the moment.

Not exactly enthralled by the thought of signing Nosworthy but would be willing to give him my support should he sign. I am wondering is there a player we've been linked to when there hasn't been an immediate outpouring of negativity?!
One good signing will make us all feel better, lets hope it happens soon

Not to sure myself, i don't rate Delaney, brilliant at times, so bad the others, with big Maci felt safe, but with two in-consistant defenders in our back line? Not to sure. I'd personally like Fitz Hall from QPR, or McCartney from Crystal Palace, we have the funds, so spend it Marcus! Sharp, Bullard, Graham, Coppinger, McCartney, Hall, Nugent? And Nathan Dyer maybe? That'd be my team.
