Town striker Connor Wickham has been named in the England squad for this summer’s UEFA European U21 Championship in Denmark next month. Coach Stuart Pearce has reduced his long-list of 40 players down to the travelling party of 23.

Prior to the tournament, England face Norway in a warm-up game at Southampton on June 5th. Once in Denmark, Pearce’s side will take on Spain on June 12th, Ukraine on June 15th and the Czech Republic on June 19th in the group stage.

Wickham, who has previously won three England U21 caps, netted the winning goal as England beat Spain 2-1 in the final of the European U17 Championships in Liechtenstein last summer.

The 18-year-old was also named in the squad for the England U19 side’s qualifying group games in Switzerland but now his place in the U21s has been confirmed, will not be involved in those matches.

England U21s: Frankie Fielding (Derby County), Jason Steele (Middlesbrough), Alex McCarthy (Reading), Ryan Bertrand (Chelsea), Kieran Gibbs (Arsenal), Phil Jones (Blackburn Rovers), Michael Mancienne (Chelsea), Micah Richards (Manchester City), Chris Smalling (Manchester United), Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur), Marc Albrighton (Aston Villa), Tom Cleverley (Manchester United), Jack Cork (Chelsea), Jordan Henderson (Sunderland), Henri Lansbury (Arsenal), Fabrice Muamba (Bolton Wanderers), Jack Rodwell (Everton), Danny Rose (Tottenham Hotspur), Scott Sinclair (Swansea City), Nathan Delfouneso (Aston Villa), Daniel Sturridge (Chelsea), Danny Welbeck (Manchester United), Connor Wickham (Ipswich Town).

Bench warmer and water bottle carrier. Still will give him an excuse next season if he does not score all the goals that many on here think he will

The poor boy will say he is tired as he did not have a summer break!

9 goals in 41 appearances last season makes me wonder why Spurs are sniffing after him ?? Sell him Jewell !!! Use that cash to build a promotion winning team next year.

Strong squad. Add Wilshere and Carroll, and we might have a chance of winning the thing. Not that that's important or anything. (Bah!)

I think he may get a chance, was thinking he'd be behind a lot of the strikers that we picked, but there isn't a striker in the same mould in that squad (all quite pacey, small players), slightly worrying, but hopefully will have a better impact than last year's tournament.

Connor fair play, I didn't think he would make it. Obviously no Andy C is a big help.

Really hope he gets some game time. Think he will be firing next season regardless.

Please no injury though!

As it stands Wickham is the only positive striker at the club until any new signings are made.

Therefore we have to hope he stays injury free during this tournament and is able to develop next season because at present he is our only hope unless something better comes along..

In fairness looking at that squad, even without Wilshire and Carroll, we've got a decent chance. A lot of PL experience there and a few with international caps.

Whoppit showing all the football knowledge of Delia Smith there.

if i'm right in saying only him and Sinclair as outfield players not playing in the premiership. Still Whoppit/Floridaboy - You know best

Good experience and bet he can't wait. Personally I would have liked him to have the summer off though, would be typical if he picked up and injury and missed the start of next season !!

Hopefully we've got scouts watching him and the others - wouldn't mind any of those players in our squad.

could raise his price tag and give him the form he needs to be a 20 goal a season striker

With Carrol not fit, Wickham is the perfect replacement. Plus he adds far more to the team with his adaptability. He can play wide midfield, up front on his own, as part of a front two or three. Plus he works hard for the team. I wonder how he and Landsbury will get on!

I would pick Connor over Delfueanso any day of the week.

Hopefully Connor can have a word with some of these coming on loan next season

Come on Connor play well, score a few goals, put your value up then PJ can sell you for stupid money and build a team to challenge next season. I admire Connor for staying put and signing a contract extention but he is really the only asset we have so I say sell to the highest bidder

Great news. But will he actually be OUR player on his return? Time will tell.

steele, walker, gibbs, smalling, richards, rose, rodwell, henderson, wickham, sturridge, wellbeck, playing a 442 or 433, with them players, has pace and henderson holding, looks like a winner

Good luck to him. Hope he stays injury free and returns geared up for next season. Remember, he signed, it wasn't about money with him, the boy has integrity and that should be applauded.
