Liverpool Make Wickham Bid
Liverpool Make Wickham Bid
Friday, 3rd Jun 2011 23:28

Liverpool have made Town an £8 million offer for striker Connor Wickham, according to a number of national newspapers. The Reds have long been linked with the 18-year-old with their director of football strategy Damien Comolli at the Hull City match in February.

If the reports prove to be true, it’s unlikely a bid of that size would be enough to tempt the Blues and at least one paper claims the offer has already been turned down. A figure of between £10 million and £15 million is understood to be Town’s asking price with Wickham’s recently signed contract until 2014 believed to include a clause which would allow him to speak to a club if they make the Blues an offer at this pre-set level.

The Merseysiders, who Wickham supported as a boy, were also linked with the Hereford-born frontman earlier today, while Tottenham are long-term admirers.

If Town do sell Wickham this summer, they would probably prefer to do so after the UEFA European U21 Championship in Denmark later this month where, with all the Premier League big guns keeping a close eye on his progress, his value could increase.

After facing Norway in a warm-up game at Southampton on Sunday (ESPN/ESPN HD 2.30pm), Stuart Pearce’s side will take on Spain on June 12th, Ukraine on June 15th and the Czech Republic on June 19th in the group stages.

Take the money ONLY if Jewel can actually spend it!

DISASTER IF IT HAPPENS!

The only decent striker we have and if we sell we cant replace him! People say take the money and build a team but Ipswich can't seem to sign anyone no matter what the money! Lets not blame Clegg or Evans or Jewell. Simply the facts show that in recent years we always over pay and never seem to sign anyone who is quality at this level. If we get say £10 million all we do is lose a star and add more average players to a team. Yes Jewell will manage them well probably to a top ten but wont do any better than what we already have and all that will have changed is even less excitement without wickham and a bigger wage bill. Do everything to keep him or try to change our recent transfer history. Both difficult and all of a sudden I feel very negative about next year and its not even the managers fault

We've given all our other half decent players away for free so the thought of actually making some money at last is somewhat appealing! With our current squad situation as it is however it would be cray to sell him at this stage.

To be honest we have the money to buy players we just don't have the wages available. If we sold wickham we'll get more money towards the buying but will anything really change as Clegg still has to sort out wages?

and this is supposed to be a club with aspirations of getting to the premier league, let all the best players go for free leaving us with a team full of garbage apart from 1 young prospect in Connor, then sell him. this club is a joke!!

Norfolktrueblue- we havent sold him yet don't worry, i realy hope we don't sell him or get at least £10million if we do, he's a great prospect and can MAYBE get us 20 goals next year!

Gutted if he goes .

He'll destroy this division next season if we hang on to him.

SamuelDeCoy- i so hope youre right but knowing the bunch of jokers we have running our club these days and true to form with ITFC, believe me, he'll be wearing red by next weekend!

Liverpool are a bunch of dropkicks! Melv reckons that he won't be going so don't worry everyone.

Its not going to change our wage structure at the club. All its going to do is make a lot of other clubs (Doncaster, Cardiff etc) know that we have money to burn in transfer fees which will give them a golden opportunity to milk us for Sharp, Chopra etc.
If we actually managed to agree a contract with these players! (remember Charlie Austin!).
He's probably our only good player left (last year I would have said McCauley, Norris and Wickham were our best players). We won't be able to replace him...what will be will be,-if Liverpool trigger that clause we won't be able to do anything about it anyway. Who would blame him for wanting to play for Liverpool over us?
Dark, DARK times at our club. Lets hope that 3 clubs other than us next season have nightmare seasons.....I can see those in Norfolk laughing their heads off at us next season!

Think i might cut my losses and go watch Kings Lynn instead next season. Ambitious, much closer, cheaper and about the same standard of football so its a win win really!

Not enough. If valid, tell Liverpool to P O.

Ideally I'd want to see us hang on to Connor, particularly if he genuinely doesn't want to leave us, but the comes a point where pragmatism comes first. £15m for a premier league unproven 18-year-old is a very generous offer.

Jewell could theoretically put together a decent squad for next season with half of those funds. Obviously I want what's best for Wickham, but I also want what's best for the club.

Be stupid to sell in my opinion. As we've seen already lots of money doesn't bring a good team.

Strangely, Wickham is our best player now and we wouldn't replace him. Nine goals this season isn't too bad for a 17 year old (18 for the last few games). Think what he could do next season.

£8million? Which leg are they after? If they're prepared to offer £8m, it won't be the only bid. Just hope they don't go high enough to trigger the clause in his contract. Or if they do, he's sensible enough to realise that his short-term futture would be better spent in our first team than another team's reserves.

Dont care anymore

If the club are serious about getting in the prem they would keep Wickham and start buying players who will help get us there ie second bid for Sharpe

We would have offered Norris and McAuley 3 year contracts and not let them go for free

Mid table dross again next year or worse

Very very poor, feel sorry for those who have brought season tickets already

Really dont care who we sell any more and not bothered if we dont buy anyone

I dont think town should see him off for anything less than 15 Mill! I dont wanna see him go at all. Some of you guys on here are spot on. We will make money, and waste it on average joes. Not to mention if we do make 10 - 15 mill, other clubs are going to try to hold out for silly money from us for players like Sharpe. I should think his 4 million tag will jump to 5 or 6 if were to cash in on Connor. Hes got another 3 years on his contract. I think we should hold on to him for at least one more season at least. If the clause in his contract says he can speak to clubs when they have made the right offer then i guess the future lies in Connors hands. Im quite disheartened by this though. We produce the best player since Darren Bent (who we have missed for 5 - 6 years now) hes hit his peak and its sell sell sell again. Oh well, if you have a season ticket, i hope you like the thought of watching balls bounce of Scotland for 90 mins each Saturday. I just pray PJ proves me wrong, and brings in another Ellington/Roberts duo in the summer.

SELL!!!!!!

If he does not make the grade as a top player this season, that £8 million will drop rapidly. Sell him, possibl get him loaned back for a season. Make the £8 million available for transfers, buy Bullard, pay him the silly amount of money he needs and go in for St.Ledger and a striker of high quality, simply. The rest of the team along with these players, is easily good enough for a promotion push.

I suspect the clause trigger is set at 10 million and Liverpool could be testing the water. They will undoubtedly come back and then it will be up to the boy. I think he would be silly to go at the moment as he will be a bit part player up there with Carroll and Suarez the main men. Unless Town force him to go and I hope they don't then I believe he will stay. Can't quite understand the negativity on here regarding our squad. We have to carry out major surgery after the disastrous Keane era and this will take time. Players will arrive slowly ands lets face it the team performances in general over the past 2 years can easily be improved on by tactics alone. PJ is biding his time but new players will undoubtedly arrive.

Don't even think about selling Connor he is going to be invaluable to us next season.........if we have any ambition of promotion he is the one squad member we have at the moment that needs to stay!

I like many would be gutted.......as we have seen so many of our decent players go over the years cuz we had to sell them.......we don't have to sell anyone is what we are told.........If the worst does happen I just hope the clubs idea of silly money means silly!
