Jewell: Bullard Deal Just Can't Be Done
Jewell: Bullard Deal Just Can't Be Done
Monday, 13th Jun 2011 14:18

Town boss Paul Jewell has revealed that the club has ended its pursuit of former loanee Jimmy Bullard. The 32-year-old Hull City midfielder spent a hugely successful spell at the club in the second half of the season and won the the Blues' Player of the Year award but the Town manager says the financial side of the deal is beyond the club at present.

Jewell said: “Jimmy was great for us and we were good for Jimmy but realistically it just isn’t going to happen.”

The Blues boss says he talked to Tigers director of football operations Adam Pearson last night but the deal just can’t be done: “We just can’t afford to pay what Hull want and what Jimmy wants.

"He’s not just on a Premier League contract, he’s on a top Premier League contract.”

Jewell had been keen to sign his former Wigan player on a permanent basis but always admitted that with Bullard having two years remaining on his £45,000-a-week contract at Hull it would be a very difficult deal for Town to do. Hull are unwilling to loan the former Peterborough and Fulham man unless a large proportion of his wages are paid by the loaning club.

Bullard has been reported to have been in talks with QPR in recent weeks, while Norwich, West Ham and Wigan have also been linked.

The one-time England call-up made 16 appearances for Town having signed on loan in January, scoring five goals.

Thebeat;

We paid him £20k per week last season. I dont like to see the club pay any more than that in this division, its irresponsible.

ME has nothing to prove, PJ and SC did well to even get him here on loan.

I direct you to the following link;

Deal was never gonna happen.

Hi, Hull City fan here - it looks like you have all realised that you have been conned by Jimmy as well? All his talk about it is all about playing football has been proved over and over to be a lie. He even had a chance to go to Celtic on loan but turned it down as he wanted extra on top of his guaranteed wages!

He will smile and say what ever anyone wants to hear but unfortunately it is all about the money. Great player - don't get me wrong but a millstone around our necks. We are stuck with him and will cost us another £5m over the next couple of years - can't play him as it will trigger further bonuses we cannot afford and the unrest in the changing room that his contract creates.

Despite what some of you folks have posted, there are no premiership clubs knocking on the door and if Jimmy really wants to just play football, then all he has to do is tear up his contract with us. We are not asking for a fee so if Jimmy wants to play for you, he should just agree a fee with you. But he won't because he loves money too much. Regards.

Funny you mention that, I posted the link to the story above your post.

He's a crafty bugger, says all the right things. But he is motivated by money like most.

Never expected him to sign permanently, but I dont hold it against him, he did a good job.

Just to add that when HCFC gave him that contract the whole world thought they were made and could see it would end in tears.

First of all, I'd like to say thanks Jim, we were heading for league 1 before u arrived. Imagine the players we could have been attracting then!! Jim brightened up my season, I was lucky enough to be at the cardiff game. Awesome.

Secondly, why don't we make him an offer in line with our top earner then implement a bonus system for the whole 1st team squad that becomes active on promotion, rewarding players for their specific contributions ( games played, goals, assists, motm, clean sheets etc) that way the team wage is directly related to how valuable the player has been.

Everyone knows the premiership is the goal, we want players who are going to put in everything, not just happy to tread water. This would be excellent motivation. But it would only work if it was activated on promotion, so the players realise it's team first. If we don't play for one another, or play in a selfish way no one get's the bonuses.

Despite all of this talk, I still wouldn't be totally shocked if he ended up back here on loan again next year. I'm not saying I'm expecting it, but stranger things have happened! There is still a long way to go transfer-wise this summer. Obviously Hull are desparate to sell at the moment. And his time at Ipswich has put him back in the shop window and he is trying to negotiate a permenant deal with someone. But if Hull can't get rid of him, it could help both clubs out again.

This is just going to run all closed season with Jimmy and Hull both protecting there own interests naturally.
Put simply, Jimmy is entitled to 45k a week in wages from Hull for the next two years, he is also an excellent footballer and wants to play, be loved and so on. Hull however don't want to have to pay the money owed and will have no interest I'm sure, in playing Jimmy again because they will apparently have to pay him even more if they do (at least that is what they will tell Jimmy).
My guess is that a lower premier league club with a bit of cash on the hip will take a punt, we know what Jimmy is capable of, but everyone knows the possible outcome of putting an uninsurable crocked player on a big contract, I think the club that gets him will get him for free and pay a large enough portion of the next two years wages that Hull owe for Hull to maybe change a 45k a week debt into a 10k a week debt for example, on top of the lump sum Jimmy would receive he would probably sign a 2 year deal worth say 10k a week on top of the 10k that Hull would still owe him a week for the next two years, so he would get 20k a week plus a massive lump sum. Hull would get an expensive liability off their wage bill and save a massive portion of the wages that they will have to pay Jimmy if he stays.
Of course this could be all pie in the sky and if nothing happens he will be with us next year on a loan, which could well please everyone, :)

@ Sniegster - He'll not be coming back to you unless you pay his wages. If you want him so bad and he wants to play for you, then sort it with each other.

Our board have stated their position, you got him on the cheap last year, he showed what he can do. Whoever he goes to has to meet Jimmys demands - not Hulls.

Thats the point, PJ has stated we dont want him enough to pay £45,000 per week in wages.

How do you define cheap? £20,000 per week is not cheap by any standards.

Please stop blaming others for the truly awful decision of Hull to give him a £45,000 per week contract. Everyone else knew it was madness.

In some ways its great if he stays at Hull..... you cant play him, and he really is killing your promotion hopes.

......thats great for us!!

"Quote Ryorry
oh I just love the pompous arrogance of those sitting on their fannies slagging off JB for "BS-ing" us, being a mercenary blah blah blah - excuse me, were you present in the room/on the phone when JB discussed his options with his agent? Did he invite you to share his thought processes when he was making his decision/s re his future?

Maybe - just MAYBE - it is actually about the football, how the hell does anyone know that he hasn't got an offer from a Prem'ship club, and if he has, who the heck could blame him for wanting to go up a level.

Suggest people keep their gobs zipped till they actually know what they're talking about, rather than talking from a basis of ignorance."

You obviously are one of those that you describe above, otherwise you would know that JB doesnt have an agent & he does all the deals himself !

@7797100 - Hi there, all I'm saying is, if this all ends up in some almighty Hull/Bullard stailmate at the start of the season, (which it could if Hull can't sell/give away, and no-one is prepared to match the huge wages), then that may end up the best option. Not ideal I know, and I expect him to end up at the likes of QPR next season to be honest, but I just wanted to add a thought or interesting option.

Bullard is looking after himself and who can blame him? Why would any of us settle for less than half the wages we are already on, at a new job, if we didnt have to?

Bullard did a great job for us on loan and reminded me at least of what a real footballer can do. Good luck to him wherever and whatever he does.

Tillz9 added 19:35 - Jun 13
Now we have sacked off Bullard I think we should offer Dyer a pay as you play deal. He genuinely ways to play for us and if we can get 25-30 games out of him he would make a massive difference. That's a big if but on pay as you play not a massive gamble !

Ryorry added 19:43 - Jun 13
JAYDEE - unlike you and most others I said MAYBE.
AND he didn't take you into his confidence re his thought processes when it came to him making his decision did he?
So I stand exactly behind what I said, nothing has changed to make me wrong about those basic points.

To those knocking the man, how the heck can you blame him?

Not one of you would want to take a drop in wages and neither would I.

Crikey - it's not complicated.

Completely unsurprising.

Best wishes for the future Jimmy. Thanks for your efforts and goals in the second half of what was a disastrous season, helping steer us away from relegation danger, plus brightening up the place with your personality. Well deserved Fans' Player of the Year award for your impact.

No way we should break our wage structure to pieces for a single player - we've had hard experience doing that in the past.

Those people criticising JB for saying it's not all about the money, what was he supposed to say? Do any of you read a paper? Every sports story is written that way. Why on earth would he say "I won't be here next season because I know you won't pay 45k a week and why would I come here for less?"

We paid him for a service and we got our monies worth, now we move on and we get someone similar or who can develop for less.

Good luck to him and I wish him all the best - although I can't see anybody paying a fee to Hull and 45k a week for a 32 year old.

And Dyer is not now an option, he's just as about the money as Bullard, except he isn't currently getting paid. We'll have to break the bank to pay for somebody who's way beyond his best and who's only played a handful of games in 3 years.

Infineteregress added 21:43 - Jun 13
Concentrate on signing Danny Green who by all accounts is a set piece specialist and knows where the goal is. If, in the admittedly unlikely situation, Hull aren't able to flog Jimmy to a premier league side we should be straight back in there for a season long loan.

Lightningboy added 21:54 - Jun 13
A shame cos he was/is real class..a midfield playmaker we haven't had here since Magilton was in his prime..but no point in busting the bank..onwards and upwards..at least it's refreshing being linked with players that aren't just in sunderland's reserves.

Keaneish added 23:04 - Jun 13
Told you he was a money man all along. He could wave the Hull contract, sign for anyone on a free and still be a comfortable millionaire for the rest of his life but no, not enough!

TractorRoyNo1 added 23:37 - Jun 13
you are such a fickle lot - ask yourselves, would you take a pay cut of 60% and work for a company that is nearly on its uppers? or would you take a pay cut of 20% and work for a company that is on the up? or would you not take a pay cut at all if your current company gave guaranteed your wages for the next 2 years - hey it's called the real world and its about time you realised that footballers are just blokes who work for a living, they do not support the club, they do not care about the club, they only care about their own familes

h32 added 20:02 - Jun 14
TractorRoyNo1 - you're right - all these people who 'believe' that players are not in it for the money, and 'love their Club' - are delusional.
Not totally unheard of agreed, but the likes of Kevin Beattie, Matt Holland, Tony Mowbray, and a few others who have graced our Club, have very much been the exception to the rule in this game.

They are in it 'FOR THE MONEY' today - and who can blame them? - it's there to be had (lots of it) - whilst people keep coughing up through the turnstiles, and keep absorbing increases year after year, it will always be the case.

Your post is bang on, you've read the situation very well.

As far as I'm concerned, if his daft current contract is ignored, then a £2m fee and £20k a week wage would be about right for a player of his ability. If anyone wants to give us £2m, then we'll give it to him to make sure he agrees the £20k a week. If anyone wants him on a free, then they can take on the £45k, as it amounts to the same thing.

If no-one wants to pay his wage, or a fee, then he can play for us, as our new owners are worth £300m and have already said they have no intention of paying for him to play for other club(at least not a significant amount).

Personally, I think he'll end up at QPR, but we'll see.
