Bournemouth Defender Linked Again
Bournemouth Defender Linked Again
Saturday, 18th Jun 2011 09:26

Town are again being linked with Bournemouth central defender Jason Pearce, who is also said to be interesting his former club Portsmouth. The Cherries are reported to want £750,000 for the 23-year-old, who has previously been mentioned in connection with Burnley and Barnsley, while a move to Peterborough was close a fortnight ago.

Posh seemed set to complete a £500,000 deal until Bournemouth discovered that the previous Dean Court regime which had signed him from Portsmouth in August 2007 had agreed to a 50% sell-on clause which scuppered the switch.

Hillingdon-born Pearce came through the youth system at Portsmouth but failed to make a senior appearance for Pompey.

During his time at Fratton Park the 6ft 1½in tall centre-half spent time on loan at Bognor Regis Town and Woking before joining the Cherries on a free transfer.

Since then Pearce, who is contracted until 2013, has established himself as a key member of the Bournemouth side as they have progressed from League Two strugglers to League One play-off semi-finalists. In January 2010 he was named the Cherries’ first team captain.

Earlier in the week, Town boss Paul Jewell confirmed that he had made an enquiry regarding Preston centre-half Sean St Ledger, although no firm offer was on the table at that point, and Pearce may be seen as an alternative if the Blues and Lilywhites can’t agree a deal for the Ireland international.

Jewell will be keen to complete more moves before pre-season training begins on June 29th with his former Wigan striker Nathan Ellington, who is understood to have held talks at Portman Road earlier in the week, appearing likely to be the next man through the door.

Meanwhile, former Blue Danny Haynes, currently with Barnsley, has been linked with Burnley, Hull and Blackpool.

Ex-Town striker Sam Morrow has joined Ross County having been released by Tranmere at the end of the season.

Well worth a punt I reckon,st ledger could be a bit expensive with not a great injury record.pearce only 23,got a bit of hunger, wants to play as high a level as he can,as for ellington what a waste of time,he aint gonna score goals while he's got a hole in his a#se!!!!!

Ellington? Not exactly the potent striker i was hoping would accompany Chopra up front. Wickham and Chopra naturally or Lee Martin playing just off Chopra in my opinion. If we get a decent attacking midfielder then even Priskin to stretch the back 4 and Chopra with Wickham out wide but Ellington?

Must mean Scotland is off for cash?

Just the sort of player we should cherry-pick.

I seem to remember a certain Michael Mills who also didn't make the grade as a Portsmouth Youth player.......

Decent player. Young, hungry and wages shouldn't be massive, well worth a go IMHO.

Just the type of player we want, im more excited over this lad than SSL. He has been with a good manager for a while, and got his team promoted a few times.

let the good times roll...

I've seen him play. Snap him up! He's just what we need.

Is Delaney the calm head to play alongside him though? Not so sure. A few too many howlers for me last season! Maybe he'll step up to the plate a bit more now Mac has gone.

From what little I've seen of him he looks good. Anybody any idea who the striker is who PJ bid for?
If he wants players in by pre season training its going to be a busy week!

Pearce - right age and just the sort of player we should be signing. A young centre back joining us along with the experienced Ingimarsson seems a good strategy to me.

Ellington - a big ask to turn his career round to his pre-2006 days. If his wages are low though, he might be worth it on a free transfer as he doesn't turn 30 until next month so is a good couple of years younger than Scotland.

Atleast he's got some height to him, St Ledger isn't six foot. Experienced Ingimarsson and youthful Pearce could be a good partnership, also Delaney battling for a first team place as well is encouraging.

Id be tempted with this Pearce bloke aswell as Sean St Leadger if the price is right.Surely with about 120 odd players out of contract andavalable on freebies we can get some decent quality players for nowt

Just the kind of player we need, very exciting.

Koumas good midfielder and on a free, do not think he has fulfilled his initial potential which is a shame and good dead ball man. how old is he now though?

RedDust - mate who's a Cardiff season ticket holder said he was a waste of space last season.

Koumas is 31; he'll turn 32 in September. A year younger than Bullard then. Koumas used to be brilliant, but apparently he is now looking at moving to Sheff Wed!

Two good signings by PJ so far - and IMO Pearce would make it three out of three! Sadly, Nathan Ellington would tarnish that record as his goal scoring ratio over the past 4 years has been nothing short of shocking. Priskin is more effective!
