Bournemouth Defender Linked Again
Bournemouth Defender Linked Again
Saturday, 18th Jun 2011 09:26

Town are again being linked with Bournemouth central defender Jason Pearce, who is also said to be interesting his former club Portsmouth. The Cherries are reported to want £750,000 for the 23-year-old, who has previously been mentioned in connection with Burnley and Barnsley, while a move to Peterborough was close a fortnight ago.

Posh seemed set to complete a £500,000 deal until Bournemouth discovered that the previous Dean Court regime which had signed him from Portsmouth in August 2007 had agreed to a 50% sell-on clause which scuppered the switch.

Hillingdon-born Pearce came through the youth system at Portsmouth but failed to make a senior appearance for Pompey.

During his time at Fratton Park the 6ft 1½in tall centre-half spent time on loan at Bognor Regis Town and Woking before joining the Cherries on a free transfer.

Since then Pearce, who is contracted until 2013, has established himself as a key member of the Bournemouth side as they have progressed from League Two strugglers to League One play-off semi-finalists. In January 2010 he was named the Cherries’ first team captain.

Earlier in the week, Town boss Paul Jewell confirmed that he had made an enquiry regarding Preston centre-half Sean St Ledger, although no firm offer was on the table at that point, and Pearce may be seen as an alternative if the Blues and Lilywhites can’t agree a deal for the Ireland international.

Jewell will be keen to complete more moves before pre-season training begins on June 29th with his former Wigan striker Nathan Ellington, who is understood to have held talks at Portman Road earlier in the week, appearing likely to be the next man through the door.

Meanwhile, former Blue Danny Haynes, currently with Barnsley, has been linked with Burnley, Hull and Blackpool.

Ex-Town striker Sam Morrow has joined Ross County having been released by Tranmere at the end of the season.

Since leaving West Brom Ellington has scored 17 goals in 113 (1 in 6.6), 7 goals of which were in the Greek top league.
Since leaving Watford, Priskin has scored 7 goals in 54 (1 in 7.7).
Since leaving Swansea, Scotland has scored 11 goals in 71 (1 in 6.5).

So Ellington is probably about on par with what we've got, which I agree isn't very exciting. The question would be whether Jewell could get him back to his best. At Wigan he scored 59 in 134 (1 in 2.3), but that was a few years ago now.

Young Pearce would be a fine aquisition to our club, so also would St Ledger, these two with Delaney & Smith would give solid central defensive options.

I wouldn't mind ellington to be honest, always thought we've needed someone quick and powerful since Bent left, e.g Roberts, Miller

graeme soeness said you play your best football between 28 and 32 so there's hope for Ellington on a free why not Jewell knows him and may get the best out of him

Would much prefer we go for Pearce than the slow and not so tall St. Ledger. We need hungry players and Pearce is one for the future. Looked impressive in games on the TV - go get him PJ.

Mattyenfield - think you might want to brush up on your Ipswich Town history! Sibelius8 is talking about our one time skipper, UEFA and FA cup winner and England International Michael 'Mick' Mills!
