Town Confirm Ellington Move
Tuesday, 21st Jun 2011 14:32

Ipswich Town have confirmed that Nathan Ellington has joined the club on a two-year deal. The striker will be paraded at a press conference being held at 3pm.

TWTD has been reporting a possible deal for the former Wigan striker for several days and Ellington himself tweeted that he was joining the club earlier today.

Town boss Paul Jewell said: "I've worked with Nathan before at Wigan and Derby and know his strengths. He has shown he can score goals at this level and will add to the competition for places within the squad."

All TWTD's previous articles on Nathan Ellington can be found here.

My last word on this subject.........

I am old enough to have seen the 1980-1981 team in action. I saw some great football under George Burley even more recently.

Fast forward to the present and what do we see? Yes, Ellington is the latest washed up player who is not the sort of signing that we need in order to get promoted. Look at some of the signings we have made over the last few years. Priskin, Scotland, Martin, Healy and now Chopra and Ellington plus countless others. None of those are fit to lace the boots of any of the 1980 team.

But most of you on here are easily pleased and are happy to settle for more and more mediocracy and that ladies and gentleman is exactly what we have had here for 10 years almost. Even the Budgies have overtaken us now for gods sake !!!

So, forgive me if I am not too thrilled about Nathan (Paul Mariner) fu@%ing Ellington would you??

whoppit, I bet you're a bundle of laughs down at the Derby and Joan Club.

Why don't you wait and see what Paul Jewell can do with him a second time before spouting your mouth off !

I too remember the old days [ as do lots of us ] but that doesn't mean we have to slag off our team/players before they've kicked a ball. Try giving them encouragement for a change, and if you think none of our players read this site, think again. Rant over, COYB !

Whoppit, I go back to before the old Division 1 winning team but that does not give me a monopoly on superior knowledge. It is ridiculous trying to make comparisons with the 1981 team as that was by far the best we have ever had and won the EUFA Cup. Get realistic, it isn't going to happen again in the modern era. If that is your yardstick, then you are are going to suffer many more years of disappointment. And to say 29 is past it defies belief.

Very pleased with PJ's previous business this pre-season, but not as thrilled about this I am afraid. Terrible goal scoring record over the past 4 seasons. So many better strikers around. I just hope he's here as a squad player and not as a replacement for Wickham or indeed Scotland (who IMO is better than Ellington).

Having said that, I wish him well. Not my prefered choice perhaps, but any ITFC player deserves a chance and I sincerely hope he proves me and many others wrong. Best wishes Nathan. Welcome on board.

On a side note, I hope this now ends the stupid slating about other managers 'targeting players from their previous clubs'. Personally I can see the sense in it - sometimes better the devil you know. Previous managers at ITFC though have been slated - wrongly IMO - for this. It would seem PJ also looks to bring in 'old' players.

I think daniel9624s comments on our crop of strikers is entirely accurate!!

On a free I think he is a good solid acquisition and getting very excited about next season, some solid championship players. Now for the midfield and defence.

The facts are 1 goal in 5 games over the last 5 seasons, same as priskin. would love to be wrong, but the facts are he has nt set the world alight for a long while. COYB

strikers are not always about putting the ball in the net, sometimes a good striker can create havoc and assist the main goal poacher... if you want to look at stats alone look at his time under Jewell at Wigan... lets give the guy a chance eh

Blue lady strikers are judged by goals, that's not an opinion its a fact, and we need goals. would love to be wrong on this one.. but i dont get this one i really dont.. COYB

Hey what's the problem people? Free transfer for someone Watford paid nearly £3 million for a couple of years back (and they don't throw their money around). They are in disarray after losing their best manager in years and are probably run by bean counters wanting to reduce their wage bill. Preston aparently wanted to keep him. This COULD be a really good and astute move by PJ. I think he has something to prove and so does PJ after Derby. If anyone is going to get the best out of him PJ will. I am feeling positive about this and welcome the 'Duke' to Portman Road. More signings to come before we can really see how the team is going to shape up. Plus it also depends if Connor is going to be here (which I hope he is). If not we will have more money to help strengthen the squad. So let's be positive and get behind the team ready for next season. COYB!!!

Welcome 'Duke' here's hoping you can rekindle those days at Wigan.

Your hit-rate will need to be better than Scotland's and hopefully we will soon sign a midfielder to replace the goals that Norris scored (as it was those two along with McA that kept us up).
