Five Live Tribute to Sir Bobby

BBC Radio Five Live is celebrating the life of Sir Bobby Robson on Saturday with a special programme dedicated to the legendary former Town manager. The Day I Met Sir Bobby Robson (11am) features people whose lives were touched by Robson reflecting on the effect he had upon them.

It includes funny, heart-warming and emotional recollections from his childhood, from his days as a player and as a novice manager, to his time as one of the world’s top bosses and his struggles against cancer.

Meanwhile, Five Live has also commissioned a drama entitled Don't Cry For Me, Maradona to celebrate the 25th anniversary of that goal starring Tim Healy as Sir Bobby and Denise Welch as his wife Lady Elsie.

Written by Aelish Michael in consultation with the Robson family, it’s set in the couple's favourite beauty spot, Hilltop, which overlooks Langley Park in County Durham, where they both grew up. It was first broadcast last night but is repeated on Sunday at 6pm.

It should be a very long programme as he touched the lives of so many. Met him about 10 years ago on the astroturf pitch behind main stand prior to a home game. Stood talking footie for a good ten minutes, my mate & me were like a couple of starstruck teenagers afterwards (i was 40 at the time). What a man, LEGEND.
