Jewell: More Players in Regardless of Wickham Sale
Jewell: More Players in Regardless of Wickham Sale
Wednesday, 29th Jun 2011 12:48

Town boss Paul Jewell says that players will be added to his squad regardless of whether Connor Wickham completes his expected switch to Sunderland. The 18-year-old is likely to sign on the dotted line at the Stadium of Light this afternoon after the clubs agreed a fee which could ultimately be worth around £13 million.

Jewell said: "There has obviously been a lot of talk about Connor this week but we will be adding numbers to the squad whatever happens.

"I'm obviously pleased that we have brought in three players and there will be more to follow. That does not depend on any player leaving.

“Like I said, we need to add to the squad and we will be. I've been on the phone all summer and I'm sure that won't change for a while yet!"

According to reports in the North-East, Wickham passed his medical at the Stadium of Light yesterday having agreed personal terms with the Black Cats and is due at the club to sign a long-term deal today.

The fee is now understood to be an initial figure of around £9 million rising to close to the £13 million mark after appearances and the usual achievements at domestic and international level.

Good Luck Connor, a good move for you and for ITFC. Hopefully we'll see you playing at Portman Road sooner rather than later with Town as Premierleague club (and not Sunderland getting relegated!)

Looking forward to some more faces coming in during the next few weeks. Some young hungry players such as Cresswell along with some experienced Championship pro's who know what it takes to get out of the Championship would be good.

Keep building PJ!

Hope that a bidding war wasn't possible as this would be a bad bit of business...

Good luck to him, hes made the right decision! i would rather play in the prem over championship every day of the week!Sunderland will hopefully just be a stepping stone for him to move to a larger club, once he has adapted to the prem.

But we do now need to go and buy some decent players! Ellington is not good enough any more to be a top goal scorer. we need someone else to play with Chopra as priskin and scotland should not be in the starting 11! PJ needs another good fast striker, St ledger hopefully and a good Centre mid.

FIngers crossed that the majority of that money goes back into the team

cleggy get the sell on cluase right
if andy carroll is worth £35million, and wickham is sold to real madrid in 2013 for £40million, a 205 of profits sell on clause would net a cool £6mill

people will now mention billy sharpe - yes he is a good player but whats the point in overpaying for a player...yes we could offer £3.5 now but he is not worth that! that would be very bad business - as much as i want him

Good luck Connor, we should remember that he kind of fell in our laps with his dad moving posts and the money from this sale if it goes to PJ could give us the chance to give Norwich a spanking in the top flight. Future top ups from international games etc etc should keep us competative in the future. Thanks Connor and keep up the good work :)

Billy Sharp has made it clear he doesn't want to play for Ipswich. Maynard might be worth a sho, he hasn't rejected us yet

These Players Are perfect, good selection and a good mix of experience, youth and pace.... Dont think Bullard will be coming back im afraid but apart from that all possible and all of these we should be looking to sign :D COYB... Regarding Connor I really wish he was leaving but like people have said too much to turn down and now hopefully we can really kick start our campaign for promotion. In Paul Jewell We Trust! COYB!

Damn right we need more players in PJ...

A new GK.

One more centre-back.

A right-back who can defend.

2 central midfielders ideally.

& a New striker - assuming Wickham goes.

Still a lot of work to be done until we've got a team who can challenge near the top.

Talk is cheap, Now show us fans some real ambition like other clubs and bring in Maynard. Even if it does cost us 3.5 million. Stop talking crap and bring us quality, Not past it players in their 30's!

Why don't we go for Nugent - he is on a free and he always scores at Portman Road - this means at least 23 goals next season:) Apart of the jokes Nugent will be much better and for free than any other for 3-4,000,000

Whippet and whoppet- Why do you keep implying that the players we are signing are really old- The average age of the 3 signings so far is 29, ideal in my view. Your entitled to your oinions but I suspect that you don't really believe half of what you say you just do it to be negative and wind everyone else on here up.

...ipswich24..

I'd be happy with all those selections maybe apart from Simon Cox.

Can we tempt Leeds with an offer for Becchio?..he'd be my first choice.

There had better be players coming in, seeing as we don't have a team. If the season started today, the central midfield would be Leadbitter and Healy with Hyam on the bench. The current squad is a relegation squad, even before suffering the injuries that will come along. Good thing it's June really.

Wonder what the domestic achievements are. Sunderland winnning the Premiership, Sunderland winning the FA Cup? Better become Sunderland fans if looking for a favourite Prem team

I guess if this deal is going ahead (likely) then we can be happy that we will have time to spend the cash, unlike Newcastle who lost Carroll right on deadline day, leaving them no time to get a replacment in.
