Jewell: More Players in Regardless of Wickham Sale
Jewell: More Players in Regardless of Wickham Sale
Wednesday, 29th Jun 2011 12:48

Town boss Paul Jewell says that players will be added to his squad regardless of whether Connor Wickham completes his expected switch to Sunderland. The 18-year-old is likely to sign on the dotted line at the Stadium of Light this afternoon after the clubs agreed a fee which could ultimately be worth around £13 million.

Jewell said: "There has obviously been a lot of talk about Connor this week but we will be adding numbers to the squad whatever happens.

"I'm obviously pleased that we have brought in three players and there will be more to follow. That does not depend on any player leaving.

“Like I said, we need to add to the squad and we will be. I've been on the phone all summer and I'm sure that won't change for a while yet!"

According to reports in the North-East, Wickham passed his medical at the Stadium of Light yesterday having agreed personal terms with the Black Cats and is due at the club to sign a long-term deal today.

The fee is now understood to be an initial figure of around £9 million rising to close to the £13 million mark after appearances and the usual achievements at domestic and international level.

I wouldn't sign for Ipswich at the moment and I support them. Going nowhere fast.

Correct me if im wrong (and apologies if I am) but wasnt it the Donny Chairman who said Sharp wasnt interested in Ipswich rather than Sharp himself? I still think our ambition compaired to Donny's would be too much to turn down if a fee can be agreed - but I guess its watch this space.

Good luck to Connor for the future. It was always a case of when not if and £9mil rising to £13mil is a good bit of business for a player who has not played a whole season in a first team anywhere yet. I would have loved to have seen him stay for our rise up the table in the 2011/12 season but money talks in football. I am hoping that he does the business at Sunderland on the pitch so I can put him in my dream team!

I have a feeling nugent is coming. He said like last week that he's on holiday and will decide his future when he gets back we have been linked with him. And tbh selling wickhamyou have to replace him with a big name! As the board have said! Our ambitions are still the same soo if wickham goes a big name will be in garenteed if what they have said about our ambitions of getting back to the prem are right. Nugent would be my ideal choice. Maynard is obviously quality! But him and chopra up front however mouthwatering it sounds! there will be no height in the attack both smaller nippier lads but with nugents adds a different dimention. My money is on nugent.

We need players in asap from this sale (before all the good players are snapped up). Can't believe the state of our squad at the moment. I look at it and fear the drop (as did Sheff Utd fans did last year). We need good, hungry players-teens or early 20's. We still have time to rectify this situation, but we actually need to spend rather than sign 30-somethings on free transfers.
In total agreement arc, our central midfield is terrible,no creativity at all.

would've been better to keep him, worried about the true intentions of Evans

Kevin Phillips on a free, old but still got the killer touch

Nugent wouldnt excite me as a new signing, never even had a good goal scoring record in this division.

Dont want Sharp for £3.5m.

Only player I would genuinely be excited to see signed would be Maynard.

Kevin Phillips 2- forgot about him!
We won't go down this season, We won't go down this season, We won't go down this season, We won't go down this season, We won't go down this season
If I tell myself this enough it might come true!

I will take 4th place from the bottom and push hard for mid table the year after.

Absolutely Whoppit. If we stay up I will be happy too. We need to start putting the building blocks in pace for August 2012.
Phillips would be a quality signing, good call casanovacrow. Always likely to grab a goal from nothing.

Billy Sharp is twice the player of Maynard. There really is no comparison and he is worth every penny of £3.5m. He would work so well with Chopra. Ellington can sweep the changing rooms......

God, Phillips is about 40, Nugent is only 26, we need some pace for god's sake, show some ambition for a change, we need, a cntre back 2 full backs, a creative midfielder and Nugent, without 5 or 6 decent players wer are going to struggle, we don't have a decent midfielder in the club!

Can't wait to see who's coming in, anybody got any REAL info ?

tractorboy2434 added 13:38 - Jun 29
Let's be realistic, Evans will want keep some of this cash after the shedload that Keane wasted, I would estimate that PJ has 3M tops to spend, Nugent is on a free let's see some action, our club is complacent with a capital C

Tiggs - Explain your reasoning as to why Sharp is twice the player Maynard is?

My Sheff Utd supporting mate probably wouldnt agree. Sounds like a weak character too.

Yeah! Phillips! Cos then it'd give whippet whoppit whackit wicket and all the other moaners something to really get into!
Good luck to Connor and let's hope it's a big name defender, midfielder an striker bought in to replace the 3 we lost!

What did I just say, it seems that Nugent is to hold talks with Leicester on his return from holiday this week, just what does it take to get our people motivated, they have already got 3 in this week and now Nugent it seems, just what is our problem, probably Clegg !

Drama queens!! None of you have a clue what talks are taking place behind the scenes.

Get real children. Wait a few more weeks before throwing all of your toys out.

Phil - Can we make people take an IQ test before becoming a member?

Thanks

So now we have "money" all the potential signings are mentoned. Please remember that this is the club offering reduced contracts to lower the club budget. Wages are the biggest outlay for a player so it is unlikely we will be signing the high earners, much as we would like them.

HolbrookBlue - Fans like you are the reason that football is in such a poor financial state. Demanding high earners, great.

Slightly off topic here but now that we have some cash can we reduce the price of those delicious award winning pies?? Surely a 5p reduction will increase sales hence a bigger profit. I like meat pies and I can not lie !!! Nom nom nom nom nom nom.

youidiots added 14:05 - Jun 29
the problem I can see with people already spending the "Wickham money" in their minds is that despite how much money we do receive, we wont break our wage structure so wont attract a higher calibre of player. It's all well and good spouting all these names about, putting £3-£4 million bids for players but they wont come for peanut wages.
