Jewell: More Players in Regardless of Wickham Sale
Jewell: More Players in Regardless of Wickham Sale
Wednesday, 29th Jun 2011 12:48

Town boss Paul Jewell says that players will be added to his squad regardless of whether Connor Wickham completes his expected switch to Sunderland. The 18-year-old is likely to sign on the dotted line at the Stadium of Light this afternoon after the clubs agreed a fee which could ultimately be worth around £13 million.

Jewell said: "There has obviously been a lot of talk about Connor this week but we will be adding numbers to the squad whatever happens.

"I'm obviously pleased that we have brought in three players and there will be more to follow. That does not depend on any player leaving.

“Like I said, we need to add to the squad and we will be. I've been on the phone all summer and I'm sure that won't change for a while yet!"

According to reports in the North-East, Wickham passed his medical at the Stadium of Light yesterday having agreed personal terms with the Black Cats and is due at the club to sign a long-term deal today.

The fee is now understood to be an initial figure of around £9 million rising to close to the £13 million mark after appearances and the usual achievements at domestic and international level.

Why all the doom and gloom there is plenty of time to get players in although some of you are being ambitious about Maynard - if he leaves Bristol City he will almost certainly go to a Prem Club. At the moment we could still put out a half decent team i.e. Fulop
Edwards Ingimarsson Delaney Kennedy
Hyam
Carson Leadbitter Drury Martin
Chopra
Not the best team in the world but certainly not a relegation candidate.
In PJ I trust.

StowTractorBoy, with only one up front we will certainly struggle to get goals.
PJ is be aiming to play 2 up front which means 4-4-2.
Ellington will almost certainly start with Chopra. Must wait and see if he buys another striker though!

We have a big hole to fill in central midfield and need a player with a spark of creativity in the middle. Koumas has the ability but not sure about his legs.
McPhail at Leeds would be a reasonably good player for us and not cost the earth.

What is PJ on about? Surely he knows Connor is going/gone. We're going to sign players ? I should hope so.

Bored with the whole saga. It was obvious at the end of last season that Wickham was going to leave. It was just a case of to whom.

To move to Sunderland shows a complete lack of ambition on the boys part and also his father who is his agent.

Down to money and money only. But there again I have always said that it is about greed and nothing else.

Sunderland are going to struggle next season without a doubt. Will finish below Norwich and Swansea IMHO!

FIVE more players required now. RB, CB, 2x midfield and replacement for Connor. Anything less and it could be another below average season. PJ has done well so far though so I am hopeful.
