Town Win Race for Cresswell
Town Win Race for Cresswell
Thursday, 30th Jun 2011 11:31

TWTD understands that Town have won the race to sign Tranmere Rovers left-back Aaron Cresswell. The Blues, who have been chasing the 21-year-old since the end of the season, have beaten West Brom and Doncaster Rovers to land the highly-rated full-back.

Cresswell, who is 5ft 7in tall, is out of contract this summer but due to his age and having been offered a new deal at Prenton Park, the League One side are entitled to compensation.

Last week, their manager Les Parry said that his club had turned down a compensation offer from a Championship side, presumably Town. If the clubs are unable to come to an agreement, the matter will go to a tribunal.

Parry also said that he expected Cresswell, whose Rovers contract is officially up today, to be at the first day of pre-season training yesterday but, according to reports on the Wirral, he and other players in a similar position failed to show.

Cresswell made 71 starts and nine sub appearances for Rovers, scoring six goals, having come through the youth system at Prenton Park.

A set piece specialist and a tough-tackler, Cresswell likes to get forward and also played on the left of midfield when progressing through the ranks at Tranmere.

The youngster looks likely to sign on the dotted line at Portman Road in the next few days, providing left-back competition for Mark Kennedy.

The acquisition of another left-sided full-back could call into question Shane O’Connor’s future with TWTD understanding that the club received a couple of enquiries regarding the Irish youngster earlier in the summer. The 20-year-old, who is contracted for another year, turned down a loan move to Hereford last season.

Town, who have already added Michael Chopra, Nathan Ellington and Ívar Ingimarsson to their squad, start their pre-season programme at Playford Road tomorrow morning.

Looks like I might have upset a few posters on here today with my question on the new blokes height. People on here are saying what about Mick Mills and George Burley well that was 30 years ago and the game has changed. Other names like Marricio and stockwell may well have been our heroes but they were not perm class and that's where we want to be. These days real tallented and and successful teams will struggle with short full backs. The oppo will just pick him out just like they did Sito.

This sounds a bit desperate. apperently we have won the race but we can't be bothered to get the player signed for a few days. Surely, it would be better to announce something concrete when he is about to put pen to paper, not announce to anyone who might want to stael him that he is still available for a few days.
ITFC , please get someone in with some business and common sense to organise the signing of players.

Sorry but theres some real cr*p being spouted here. Mills and Burley were internationals. Tarrico was hugely successful at spurs ... in the prem i do believe. Size doesn't matter (apparently).

Thanks TRFC Dave for your insights. I haven't seen Cresswell play but he certainly sounds like a good'un. Hopefully there's room for O'Connor to get a look in as well.
Good stuff Paul and Cleggy...hope that you can get this wrapped up.

From what I've read it sounds as if Cresswell could prove to be very useful on the left wing (pace, delivery, can beat a man) so maybe him and O'Connor can prove to be a very effective and interchangable left wing axis...

All the fuss about signing him up ASAP, his contract doesnt expire until tonight, you then have personal terms, length of contract, medical and payment agreement between TRFC and ITFC, just a few hurdles to get over !!!
Apparently he is very quick so dont worry to much about the ball over the top..........

If this signing goes ahead, it will be a real coup for our club. These are the kind of players along with some experienced ones that we need to be attracting to push on to the premier league.

Still need a right back, otherwise we're going no-where this season. A striker and central midfielder would be nice too.

But as for Cresswell, supurb signing, if he can deliver on his promise. Time will tell.

If we sign Cresswell will Kennedy be moved to a defensive midfield position?
I still think that we will sign a left winger as Paul Jewell seems not to rate
any of our wide players
