Town Linked With Move for Bowyer
Town Linked With Move for Bowyer
Saturday, 2nd Jul 2011 23:33

Town are being linked with a move for veteran midfielder Lee Bowyer, who is a free agent after leaving Birmingham at the end of the season.

The Blues are reported to be in talks with the 34-year-old former Charlton, Leeds, West Ham and Newcastle man regarding a deal which would make him amongst the highest earners at Portman Road. Derby are also understood to be in the hunt.

The controversial 5ft 9in tall Londoner won one full England cap when a Leeds player in 2002, in addition to 13 U21 caps.

Town are certainly in the market for central midfield players with loanee Jimmy Bullard and skipper David Norris no longer at the club.

On Friday, Blues boss Paul Jewell said he expected to make another signing on Tuesday with a further deal likely before the end of the week.

I do not know the full story re Bowyer but have read enough here to have doubts about him coming to Ipswich.

Suggest TWTD holds a poll to see what reaction would be if Bowyer was signed - i.e. happy / doubtful / unhappy / return season ticket.

I think that Bowyer would be a cracking signing!!
He was best player on the pitch in the cup final for birmingham.
He has got abit of a reputation but why do alot of you lot think that Ipswich is a club smelling of roses?? Weve had tanner- hit and run/ cocaine
Chris makin - whom was supposibly at it with another players wife!
Gary Croft- the first footballer to play with an eletronic tag...
and John Wark, Russell Osman and others escaped from jail..!!
Sign the lad for his football, would be a great asset although i dont think he would come!!

Another player nobody else wants. I don't want to support trash like Bowyer.

Would be our best signing of the summer! our midfield has been powder puff for years. He adds steel and he can pass the ball as well! Peoples attitudes about his past is pathetic. Most football players are far from saints and in recent years he has been a great asset to his club! Sign him up after we have kicked out Edwards for a recent driving offence and losing his licence! What about our former captain Norris .... He didn't always grab the right headlines!

The day he joins would confirm we no longer have porincioles. He is a thug.

He was one of Birminghams best players last season especially when they beat Arsenal in the final.

While I appreciate that many on here only want angels playing for the club who are whiter than white I always thought the aim was to get to the premier league. As far as I am concerned if that means signing players who might have had a past then so be it.

Sign him up PJ. Would had that bit of steel in the midfield that we had not had for many years and if the rumours about Bullard are true then great. Would make Bullard captain as well if he joined.

well, what a load of idiots we do have on here. lets just not sign a player whod be a great asset because of his past. by those morals thered have been many players whove played for us that in your opinion shouldnt have. & the same could be said for many clubs. before ne1 says but we are a better club than these, for heavens sake, what do you all want? a nicey nicey club that goes nowhere or a club that seeks to get promotion to the premier league by signing the players who are capable of getting you there? nicey nicey football, gets you nowhere. i dont want to see a player foul some1 then go & apologise to them, as as happened here in the past. lets have someone a bit nasty in our midfield, wholl ge tstuck in, allowing us to be able to play good football, to attack because we know hes there to cover for those getting forward. bjm, he may be a bit of a thug, but hes a thug who can play football, score goals too. when the last time we had a midfielder that other teams would be a worried about? no, i cant remember neither. as for people not ncheering if he scores? shame on you. a true supporter will support ne1 who puts on the blue shirt.

oh, & mutters. yer, if he was a good player, id happily see a budgie sign for us. wouldnt be the 1st time we signed 1, nor the last i doubt. as long as they do the business for us, dont see the issue in that.

Sniegster what the hell are you goin on about ? You are goin on about "how would you feel if a player killed or raped someone you know " and "criminals and thugs being given an easy time " , well as far as i know Bowyer has never killed or raped anyone and as far as i know has never served time at Her Majestys pleasure so wouldnt call him a thug or a criminal either . Its people like you who go on with long winded rubbish comments like above that that add fuel to the fire by twisting and over exagerrating things . Have you led a perfecft life with no regrets ? I for one certainly dont claim to be perfect and done many silly things at other peoples expense when i was a youngster but now in my 30's I HAVE GROWN UP and lead a very hard working , law abiding and responsible life . So im sure whatever Bowyer done when he was younger im sure he regrets but people do mature with age so get over the past , a past which didnt even effect you . If Bowyer comes and is hard working , law abiding and responsible that can only be good for ITFC . And for people who say they would not cheer a player like Bowyer if he scores then stay away from Portman road cos us REAL SUPPORTERS will be there to sing our hearts out and cheer on whoever scores in the Blue of our beloved Ipswich Town Fc

karlosfandangel. what a pratt you are. theres a massive difference between some1 getting involved in a fight(albeit several guys against 1), and what hes done. and remember, what bowyer done(he got cleared btw), was years ago. so to answer your question, no, of course i wouldnt, nor would ne1 else. but plenty have signed bowyer over the years. so maybe that should tell you something. get over it, support your team, whoeva it may be playing for them. or players such as gary croft, adam tanner, lee chapman(beat his wife), to name a few should never have played for us either

As long as he behaves himself in a town shirt I would have no problem, I won't let my eleven year old read this story as he is dead excited about the possible signing of someone he sees as a good player and has no idea what happened all those years ago, dragging up old dirt on this player is that really the "ipswich way"

blues1 added 09:12 - Jul 3
oh, before any1 accuses me of condoning his past behaviour, i dont. but lets remember what people on here are going on about is an alleged racist attack. there was no proof of that being the case, thats why they were cleared of that offence. so you are all going on about something that according to the law of this land, he is not guilty of. unless you were present at this attack, therefore, none of you know what caused these players to react the way they did, & therefore should not judge him, without knowing the facts. & i will tell you, i said as soon as i knew he was being released b y birmingham, that we should try to sign him. why? because he just the kind of player we need to get us promoted.

blueslady. well said. good to see some1 talking common sense. as a few on here have. to those who want to lambast someone for their past, i can only presume you are all purer than the driven snow. i.e. uve never done nething wrong in your life. no, didnt think so.

As far as I am aware, Bowyer was never charged for 'that incident' everyone is referring to. Who are we to call him guilty. The only sources we had of the incident was the media and we all know how that can be twisted. A prime example is Keane setting out to injure an opponent, however, on reading his autobiography he never says such a thing - funny how the media tried to crucify him.

Clearly Bowyer is dividing the fans but I for one, whilst not being particularly thrilled by this signing, do feel he would add a needed bite to our midfield - on the other hand he is getting on so 1 year deal only.
