Town Linked With Move for Bowyer
Town Linked With Move for Bowyer
Saturday, 2nd Jul 2011 23:33

Town are being linked with a move for veteran midfielder Lee Bowyer, who is a free agent after leaving Birmingham at the end of the season.

The Blues are reported to be in talks with the 34-year-old former Charlton, Leeds, West Ham and Newcastle man regarding a deal which would make him amongst the highest earners at Portman Road. Derby are also understood to be in the hunt.

The controversial 5ft 9in tall Londoner won one full England cap when a Leeds player in 2002, in addition to 13 U21 caps.

Town are certainly in the market for central midfield players with loanee Jimmy Bullard and skipper David Norris no longer at the club.

On Friday, Blues boss Paul Jewell said he expected to make another signing on Tuesday with a further deal likely before the end of the week.

Yes please. What we need to offset the relative youth and inexperience of the squad are some experienced, combative, competitive types in key positions. Whilst Bowyer is a journeyman midfielder with a bad boy past who will probably have no more than a couple of seasons left at this level, his playing experience will rub of on the younger players in that time and he will instill a degree of fire and brimstone into the team in the same uncompromising way that Magilton did in his day. For all the talk of ITFC being a big little club, with tradition and family values, the Cobbolds and Sir Bobby etc we are in a footballing backwater and are seen by most as the quaint country cousins. Whilst playing 'the Ipswich way' is arguably still important - although when did we last do that - the name of the game in this day and age is to win, nothing else. As such whilst with Bowyer it may not always be pretty his experience and qualities (rather than quality) will help us push on towards consolidating this year and pushing on next ..... in my opinion.

Another over the hill has been,I'd rather spend another year in championship than have players like him, brown ect...playing for my home town team.much rather we gamble with younger, hungrier up and coming players, beggers belief we keep looking at these types.come on pj don't waste any conner cash on him!

Bowyer would be a quality signing for any champ club. Wages are the only issue. Those who think he is past it did not watch enough football last year!

Whilst I do not pretend to know all of the details about the particular case in Leeds, I do know a bit about the law in this country.

The main principle being, a person is innocent until proven guilty. Woodgate was guilty of an affray, but Bowyer was cleared of all charges. Forgive me if I am wrong but doesn't that make him innocent?

Any other offences/misdemeanours that he has committed have been found out. He has been judged by his peers and suitably punished. He has 'done the crime and served the time'.

As a mature and civilised race we forgive and forget and give people another chance. Sure some crimes are so heinous it it almost impossible to forgive, e.g. James Bulger, Milly Dowler, but Bowyer is not in this category is he?

Having said that, I find it surprising that we couldn't afford Bullard, Sharp et al yet we are prepared to let Bowyer come to the club as one of 'our highest earners'. If we have have got that much money to spend I am sure we could do better.

Good player, surely still has a good year left in him at this level. Funny how our fans will criticise someone like Bowyer from afar but support Norris' sick gesture and the likes of gary croft, tanner and edwards for breaking the law. No denying he was a naughty boy but this is a long time ago and quite frankly if he makes us a better side then get him in. He won't be here to make friends, he'll be here to get us into the premier league.

Good signing if it comes off

Good ability but not the type of player we should be bringing to Portman Road. I hope we steer clear.

Difficult one. No doubt he will want a LOT of money and you have to wonder whether a 34-year old is worth it. Remember Campo?

Then again if it is between Bowyer and Brown, then Bowyer would be the better player.

Jas was decent in the premiership last year where as campo had all but retired so no comparison really..... like you I am not sure if he is on a very high wage but do feel he will add grit and experience to the midfield...

What a complete waste of money, " a deal which would make him the highest paid player" my god, just how low has this club sunk, 34 years old, at the end of his career, just another journeyman who will sit back and take the wages, Campo, Thatcher, when will we learn, if he comes that is the end for me.

Bowyer would be a good signing, is a player with grit, no little skill & weighs in with a few goals so a 1 year deal would pose little risk. Thatcher was a pretty poor footballer, couldn,t pass, mistimed tackles frequently, thats the difference. Campo was a desperate signing by a desperate manager.

Suffolkpunchdrunk - that would be Sir Bobby Robson. Bowyer had a very good season in the prem last year and I would welcome him, I don't subscribe to all this hatred for the man although I respect that people have opinions. I will judge him, if he signs, for what he does in a blue shirt and I believe he will soon win over the fans with his passion, desire and ability. We have lacked experience in that area since jim retired. I also recall what seems not that long ago the days in which we were relying on freebies such as diallo and santos, it's a breath of fresh air in comparison to be in for these quality players!

bluelady - although I agree, at 34 you do have to wonder whether he will just be there for the money as essentially he is in the last years of his career. Having said that he did 'okay' for Birmingham in the PL last year. Hence that's why this a difficult one to weigh up; yes he would add grit, yes he is a decent player but is his heart in ITFC and how much will he cost? Another concern is reading these posts it would seem it's almost 50/50; some are totally for the signing, some are boarding on giving up their season tickets! The same happened when JM signed Thatcher and as a result it never really worked out for him as the fans never really gave him a chance. We then had to pay him off. Could the same happen here?

Time will tell and of course this is only a rumour at this stage!
