Substitute Numbers Cut
Substitute Numbers Cut
Thursday, 21st Jul 2011 16:10

Football League sides have voted to cut the number of substitutes from seven to five when the new season starts at their EGM at Leicester City's King Power Stadium.

A spokesman said: "This was felt to be a sensible and prudent step given the financial challenges facing many football clubs and the commitment made earlier this summer to adopt UEFA's Financial Fair Play framework."

The reduction in squad size will amongst other things reduce the cost of overnight stays ahead of away games, while a number of cash-strapped clubs have on occasion been unable to name a full 18-man party.

Clubs will still name seven subs in both the Carling Cup and FA Cup.

The Football League switched to using seven subs - from which managers can use three - in the summer of 2009.

Versatile at not coming on under Jewell...

Good job as at present we'll struggle to fill 7 on a bench!

Jeez, we've only had 7 subs for... 3/4 years? Seems stupid to have increased in in the first place now.

due to our lack of depth in certain areas I can't say it's disastorous, the only thing is that it may limit the chances some youngsters get to gain first team experience...

As you could only bring on 3 anyway, I never saw the point of 7 in the first place.

How ironic they decide this at the Walkers, sorry King Power Stadium, when Leicester have bought enough players for a two complete teams…

I don't really understand why they couldn't just name UP TO 7 subs. That way clubs could choose to do what's best for them. Just like you don't have to name a keeper in your subs. There's not THAT much advantage to be gained by naming 7 over 5 so if a club couldn't manage to name 7 I'm sure they won't be too upset at facing a club who did.

There should only be one substitute, and his name should be Steve McCall.

Shame as allowing 7 subs allows younger players to be part of the match experience.

7 subs= 2 defenders,2midfield,2 strikers and a goalie only one player more than we need to sign.

Good. Now cut it back to one. Much more fun.

Good point naa.

I remembers the days when we was only allowed 1 sub.

5 subs:
GK?
Defender
Midfielder
Winger
Striker

..that should be ample.

There should only be two subs. EITHER:
(a) Neil and David Gregory; or
(b) Clayton Blackmore and Russell Beardsmore.

Def info.

Walkers have grabbed themselves a pack and gone packing then.

Good and unexpected move. Though allowing the sub keeper to be brought on in addition to the 3 (for an injury, not a sending off) would have been a sensible amendment.

I say no keeper! How often do keepers get injured during a match? You will call me naive but I think its a small risk worth taking. Means you can have a full back instead of just a centre back or an extra striker.

Incredibly stupid decision. No one is forcing any teams to name 7 subs so just because some clubs have to few players for their own good all the rest have to suffer for it?

Should have kept it at 7, but two of those should have been acadamy players. I am a genius!

Its the younger players who will suffer gaining valuable experience to be with the first team squad. With respect a twin room at 200 - 300 pound a night for 2 players to share is insignificant when players earn several thousand pounds a week. And its not as if there isn't room in the coach for these two poor extra souls. I thought we always took a squad of 20 players away in any case and two didn't make the bench. Perhaps time for the championship clubs to cut loose from the football league, this division harbours ambitions to get promoted and mix with the best in Europe NOT to avoid being sucked into the Blue Square league. Crass Decision, they will be forcing us to make the tea lady redundant next.....whats that some already have?
