Clegg: Town Targeting Two
Clegg: Town Targeting Two
Tuesday, 2nd Aug 2011 12:20

Town chief executive Simon Clegg says the Blues are trying to complete the signings of two more players before Saturday’s season opener at Bristol City. The loan signing of Blackburn midfielder Keith Andrews is one of those deals, while the second is likely to be another central defender.

Speaking to Radio Suffolk, Clegg said: "We've got a couple of targets in mind. I don't want to box myself into a corner, but the season starts on Saturday so we're focused on trying to ensure any deals that are to be done are done before the start of the season."

The chief executive says that once the main transfer business is done and dusted, then the club will look at securing existing players whose current terms are up next June in a bid to avoid a repeat of this summer’s exits by the likes of David Norris and Gareth McAuley.

He said: “The focus at the moment is bringing in the new players that the manager wants. We’ve done a lot of business already, seven new signings this summer, some good signings as well, very positive signings and I think people are very upbeat, whether it’s Michael Chopra at the front or David Stockdale at the back coming in on loan. I’m very positive in terms of what we can do this season.

“Once we’ve effectively closed the book in terms of the majority of what we’re trying to do over this transfer window, then we’ll sit down and look very seriously in terms of people who are coming to the end of their contracts.”

Hopefully they both have experience from the Premiership. It would be great for some one to cover Delaney or Ivar, especially when International duty crops up! It would be a good signing for Keith Andrew's to join us but I still think it would be ideal for Bullard to drop his wages and join us to help send us to Premiership. Although, I have no idea who the Defender would be, let's just hope it's a surprise that we would all like!

If I was a betting man I would put money on it being Andrews and Stearman both on loan.Lastnight someone mentioned Darren Ambrose and that we had made a stupidly low bid for him any more news on that or was it b*ll*cks.I would also think that Bullard will only go to the prem when he's dumped by Hull but we do need a creative midfeilder though i think drury may well surprise a good few of us.

Shane duffy from everton is all the rage. Young back up centre back and minimal wages i reckon. And defo keith andrews. Jewell is building good squad on a minimal budget from evans, he has what keane didnt have, invention and eye for a good player, a proper manager in ipswich tradition.

It's certainly a very intriguing and interesting pre season...and 2-3 still to come. Plus some of our youngsters. Can't wait for the rubber to hit the road.

Well done PJ and Cleggy!

I hope that I'm not being thick, but if you look at the Pride of Anglia website they list the first team squad as having 26 players of whom 16 have contracts up for renewal on or before June 2012. Most of our squad on one year contracts? What does it say about them? If management really had faith in them, surely they would have been signed up on longer term deals by now? I suppose you could say that it is a good sign in that they have to play for their livelihoods.

We are definitely going to need to toughen up defensively and need these two players up and running in the next couple of weeks to give us a chance to compete near at the top of this league, otherwise one or two injuries could cripple our campaign. It is a tough tough league and even with the signings we have made I think we will do extremely well to launch an assualt on the top six. I can see Leicester doing a QPR, Reading are likely to be strong as well. Mogga & McLaren are top top managers at this level and I can see improved fortunes for Boro and think McLaren will consolidate Forest as a top six side. I think Birmingham may struggle but can see either Blackpool or West Ham being around the top six. I think we will be slugging it out with Burnley,Portsmouth Hull and Leeds to get into the top six. Cardiff I see struggling this term.

Budgieplucker love the name, and i respect your views, a man of intelligence. However, i think you are bein slightly negative towards the town. I see us being in top four at least. In bowyer, we will have most effective player in league in my opinion. Cresswell looks a jem 2 to me 2. We just need to get our flanks operating with pace, then we have the most natu6ral goalscorer in division to put them away. Put jet into mix, abundance of ability.we just need to strengthen our back door before saturday. And we will. Jewell is impressing me with what little he has to work with.

Changing the subject somewhat? Can anyone tell me how many international caps our young 18 year old goalkeeper CODY CROPPER has? He has played in many international games. But has he been awarded any Caps yet. On the topics above Im prepared to let Clegg and PJ get on with the good work so far. Just need the finishing touches to have a decent squad ? COYB
