West Brom in Fülöp Talks
West Brom in Fülöp Talks
Wednesday, 3rd Aug 2011 00:29

Town and West Brom are reported to be in talks regarding keeper Márton Fülöp moving to the Hawthorns. The Hungarian leaving Portman Road would come as little surprise with the Blues having signed Fulham’s David Stockdale on a season-long loan last week.

Fülöp, 28, is said to be viewed as potential back-up for Ben Foster, who recently joined from Birmingham on loan for the 2011/12 campaign. West Brom signed former Town defender Gareth McAuley on a Bosman free transfer earlier in the summer after the Northern Irishman turned down a new deal at Portman Road.

Speaking after the addition of Stockdale, Blues boss Paul Jewell said the move didn’t mean Fülöp’s time at Town was at an end, however, the former Sunderland and Tottenham man, who was linked with Turkish side Bursaspor earlier in the summer, is unlikely to want to sit on the bench at a Championship club at this stage in his career, having lost his place in the Hungary squad in recent months.

With Stockdale having a 24-hour recall clause in his loan deal from Fulham, the Blues would certainly target another keeper if Fülöp, who has another season left on his contract, moves on.

Town are also said to have made Fülöp’s fellow Hungarian Tamás Priskin available for £500,000 with the 24-year-old’s former loan club Swansea again claimed to be interested.

Priskin’s exit would come as no shock with the ex-Watford man having been off-loaded to the Swans on loan last season and appearing well down the pecking order in pre-season.

Elsewhere, Town are reported to have had a £1 million offer for Stoke City centre-half Danny Collins, 30, rebuffed by the Potters.

Speaking at the weekend, Blues boss Paul Jewell said he had spoken to innumerable clubs regarding prospective central defensive signings this summer.

there is such thing as emergency loan deals as long as fa and football league happy with that happening

No real surprise that PJ wants rid of Priskin and Fulop. However, we must sign another Keeper, because the thought of ALB playing really doesn't give me any confidence. The guy tries, but isn't good enough. Re Priskin - presumably we will sign a replacement as JET is obviously seen as a left-midfielder by PJ - which leaves Chopra and Scotland only.

Quite frankly, we'd have to be mad to let him go, particularly in light of Stockdale's recall clause.

Martus - I sort of agree with you re Priskin. I really think he's may be better in the Premier where he will have more time on the ball and get it delivered to his feet. There's no doubt he has very clever feet and control. BUT never really showed it for us.
Fulop I have always been very dubious about if you cant command your area then questions have to be asked. Wouldn't bat an eyelid if he left.

Only problem: my boys have both Priskin and Fulop names on their shirts so its going to cost me two more this season! If you want to get rid of any town player just let me know and I'll get their names put on the boys shirts and guarantee the relevant player will be off within a season!

as they have signed Ben Foster for the season it sounds like our vampire keeper (afraid of crosses - boom boom) will be sitting a branch of the hawthorns.

@ Martus

All I'm saying is that we don't need to panic today. The loan window is open after the transfer window closes and I think that whilst the transfer window closes on the 31st of Aug the loan window doesn't close until the 25th of November.

We had a lot of people saying that McAuley and Norris should not have been allowed to leave on a free. Therefore with Fulop only having 1 year left on his contract I think that it makes sense to sell now rather than risk losing him for nothing next summer. I say this because Fulop is not now our No: 1. Also if Fulop decides himself that he wants to go to WBA then I wouldn't want him here because I don't want a player who wants to be elsewhere because that's not good for squad morale.

If he goes now we still have until the 25th of November to bring in another keeper on loan if necessary.

Whilst I'd love it if we could get a keeper of Stockdale's quality on a permanent signing it's simply not going to happen given our current standing. Therefore if the only way to get a quality keeper in is via the loan market then so be it. If it's good enough for PJ then it's good enough for me.

Jewell obviously doesnt rate Fulop which is why he was dropped last year for ALB , Fulop is a second choice keeper at best which is why he has only played less than 20 games a season average whilst in England over nearly 8 years .
Glad to see him move on along with Priskin ,Jewell doing the same as Bruce at Sunderland getting rid of Keanes over priced signings for average players . Bring in Wrighty as cover ,nobody signed after were any better .

jas0999 - Think you have forgotten Ellington mate but agree we would want a replacement.

If the potential problem with Stockdale is that he could suddenly be recalled then couldn't we loan Fulop out with a similar agreement in place?

dont need another keeper!
We got barret as back up and if he get injured we got cropper and lets not forget we got stockdale. If he gets recalled does it mean he gets recalled for the remainder of the season or just while schwarzer is injured??

Is this an approach for a loan? A loan with a recall is good. But dont h
Sell him pj

How good is Cody Cropper as I've not seen him?

Have to say it would seem to be a high risk strategy to rely on ALB and an unknown teenager as the sole backup!!!

Cody Cropper i think would make a good back up goalkeeper He plays in very high class games for the USA.Not club games but hard internationals Games, against the likes of Columbia,Peru, France, and others. He is still very young but plays far above his age group. I think I think it would not hurt to be put on the bench to gain confidence and experience . I do not think he would let us down. COYB

I can't see why Fulop would want to stay at ITFC, now that Stockdale is ahead of him. A chance to play regularly would surely get him on the move.

i do believe that looking in to signing scott loach would be a brrilliant addition to the team (if ofcourse it was an acceptable price) i think that he has the potentil to be a long term number 1 at this level and the next. priskin in a swap bk to watford??

Really against this proposed move.

Fulop demonstrated on countless occasions last season that he can cut the mustard in this division, his shop stopping being a particular highlight. Whilst I will concede that his distribution is at times woeful, during the 2010 season Fulop was responsible for ensuring that a good deal of our (many) drawn games weren't defeats and consequently probably kept us in the Championship.

Also, very unsure about Stockdale on two counts. Firstly, the 24 hour release clause is deeply concerning- Bergovic anyone?! Secondly, judging by Stockdale's performances during his loan spell at Plymouth in 2010, (where most Pilgrims fans agree he was about as tight as a rusty colander) i'd be wary of declaring him to be the messiah just yet.

Most terrifyingly of all, what this situation could land us with is:- no Fulop, no Stockdale and only ALB between the sticks. In short, I quite genuinely rate him as the worst player in Ipswich's recent history (unfortunately there has been stiff competition as a result of Mr's Keane's ineptitudes.) ALB's positioning in the goal is so worrisome I genuinely wonder whether he's suffering from concussion. The thought of him facing down this coming season's Leicester strike force fills me with dread. I could genuinely see Vassell (and Yakubu if they can get him back) putting 6 past us with ALB in goal.

The club's love affair with Richard Wright must end also. As much we fans can salute his past achievements he is now an utterly spent force, going from prodigy, to journeyman, to serially unemployed in a decade. His wage demands are also unrealistically large.

Conclusion, Kepp Fulop and let him and Stockdale battle it out for the No.1 Jersey, a healthy competition for places can only improve their performances.

I have negative views on Priskin leaving too, but I won't bore you all anymore as I am conscious that this rant is getting very long...

So lets loan him out with a 24hr recall clause too! If stockdale gets injured or recalled, we recall Fulop!
