O'Connor Turns Down Crawley Switch
O'Connor Turns Down Crawley Switch
Thursday, 4th Aug 2011 13:06

Blues boss Paul Jewell has revealed that Republic of Ireland U21 international Shane O’Connor has turned down the chance to join League Two new boys Crawley Town on a six-month loan. The 21-year-old, whose future looks certain to be away from Portman Road, was recently on trial with the Red Devils.

Jewell said: “They wanted to take him on a six-month loan but that’s a no-go. Shane doesn’t want to do that. As I’ve said before, if players don’t want to do anything we’re not forcing anybody out the door.”

O’Connor, who has a year left on his Town contract, still seems set to move on at some point with his agent now looking for alternative longer-term destinations.

The former Liverpool trainee, who has played only 16 minutes of first team football since the change of manager at Portman Road in January, appears some way from Paul Jewell's first team plans having been involved with the reserves squad during pre-season.

Seems a surprise but guess he feels he can get greater stability elsewhere. Shame he's an outcast but i have faith in PJ.

Silly move, as he would have got some first team experience, albeit in Division2 and would probably have come back a better player to push for a first team place. I like what I've seen of him but gather he's a bit ill disciplined from what I've read?

Wasnt out of place when he was playing for Ipswich, so I'm suprised a championship or at least a league 1 team hasn't gone for him.

If they did not want him for the season i guess he saw himself being on the bench rather than a starter.
I am sure he can find himself a long term loan or move

Maybe it shows that he is not as good as some of you make out. Only Crawley have offered him a deal so far.

Seems shortsighted as Crawley are the money team in L2 and favourites for promotion this season.

6 month loan was perfect I would have thought? Regular football in a promotion chasing side and come back in January to fight for a place, or get noticed by someone higher.

May come to regret this when he is stuck in reserves for a season....

Isn't that how inaccurate rumours start? I went to the Open day last week and people around me commented on O'Connor being good but having an attitude problem. And if there are no attitude or discipline issues??

I feel genuinely sorry for Shane. Don't get me wrong I think P.J. is doing a grand job and this is perhaps the only decision he has made to date that I completely disagree with. I cannot fathom what Shane has done to fall so far out of the picture and nor does Shane, who is equally dumbfounded apparently. He is a very likable kid. Whether it is because he does not fit Paul Jewells team photofit or PJ thinks he does not have the right temperament is anybodys guess but Shane deserves better than this in my view.

I'd keep him to be honest, he has shown potential on the pitch and could come in handy later in the season when fatigue and injury becomes an issue.

Maybe the loan was a view to buy and that's what he didn't fancy, hence he'd sooner take his chance in the reserves.

Six months to prove he is injury free. If good form is shown also, then a longer contract beckons. Get back there Shane you plonker!

If PJ isn't trying to push him out the door(quote),then why was he not in first team squad taken to Holland, team photo(which I suppose may have been taken whilst he was at Crawley);but most of all not even allocated a squad number;seems shabby treatment to me!

Hang around son, you could well see this manager out before your contract is up.

I think O'conor must have something else going on as he is a good player an in sure PJ can see that but maybe he has attitude problems ? Thinks he should start every game ? I would be dissapointed for him to leave however I'd say left back he's third choice and winger he's behind JET , peters , Carson an Martin however I'd also like to see what PJ is doing with peters ? Any ideas ?

Legoman...Would you upsticks and move your employment for a six month contract with no guarantee of a permanant position at the end of this period?
I would not for sure.

O'Connor was there on the day of the team photo, but was training with Murray, Wight and Griffiths. This was just after he'd been on his Crawley trial, so maybe appeared to be imminently on his way.
Peters on the other hand trained with the first team squad

O'Connor is not as good as Cresswell and is not as good as Lee Martin in left midfield, so, although he's a reasonable squad player, that's all he is if we want to reach the playoffs

This is a strange one. He looks like a great prospect to me. Why don't we loan him out and see how he develops?

Pessimistic - "Shane deserves better than this in my view."

How do you mean? Jewell's not booting him out the door. Certain other managers would probably have terminated his contract and cast him away. It's Shane's choice not to have gone to Crawley (which I can understand but it's a big gamble...)

It's obvious that there's something that Jewell doesn't like about him, whether it's his conduct or style of play, no one is to know. He does seem to be able to offer something to a team, especially in League 1, so I'm suprised that no one has come in for him yet but to say he deserves better treatment is I think a little harsh on the training staff/management.
