Wright Back in Blue as Reserves Draw
Wright Back in Blue as Reserves Draw
Tuesday, 23rd Aug 2011 16:56

Richard Wright was back in goal for the Blues for the first time since his summer 2010 exit as Town's reserves drew 1-1 with Colchester in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Playford Road this afternoon. As revealed by TWTD last week, Wright, who was joined in the side by trialist Ibrahima Sonko, is back training with Paul Jewell’s squad for the second time this summer, having spent a week with Cardiff City.

Boss Paul Jewell has previously played down the chances of Wright, who was released by Sheffield United at the end of last season, rejoining the Blues for a third spell, despite Town needing another keeper as back-up for David Stockdale and Arran Lee-Barrett.

Speaking earlier in the month prior to Wright’s time with the Bluebirds, the Town manager insisted that the ex-England man was just keeping himself in condition: "We were doing Richard a favour because he lives in the area.

"He was just keeping fit and he was very impressive in training but he’s gone on trial with Cardiff for a few days.”

In today's game, Steven Gillespie netted for the U’s on the hour with midfielder Jamie Griffiths on target for the Town second string with 10 minutes remaining. Colchester included former Blues Tom Eastman and Wayne Brown in their side.

I remember Lightningboy, saved a penalty too if I remember rightly. I know people would moan that this would be an unoriginal, regressive signing but he's a solid back-up keeper who's blue through and through. No disrespect to ALB but if Stockdale leaves I know who I would rather see between the sticks.

Would have RW ahead of ALB. Short memories on here again. Played very well the previous season before leaving whilst still under Jim I believe. He then had a poor spell where the defence were sh*te (as usual) and the Clown took over as Manager and the majority of the players were shipped out or soon upset and left. Give him a year and see how he performs as I can see Stockdale being recalled at some stage or perhaps getting an injury and would rather have Wright (under coach Webster) than ALB.
Sonko, is he competition for Edwards or Ingi? Assume Peters has been condemed to reserves after poor display against Northampton (head must be down afterall PJ has hardly played him since arriving) shame as he was good when played each week prior to Jewell arriving. Need some fresh players in prior to Saturday in the form of 3 defenders and perhaps a new Captain too.

flashblue, would have been more than 12 with wright, Sonko and Wright both free and past their best, no thanks get the cheque book out and buy quality in their prime, saturdays performance should tell us this, we aint good enough, and we wont be all the time we take in players past their best, not funny being a town fan at the moment, especially living in Diss, COYB

I'd put wrighty in now . Don't trust stockdale how many goals has he made any saves. You don't expect to save them all but at least some would be expected.

Richard Wright could be the keeper that suits both parties, we need a back up, or day I say it first choice. He has had is bad moments, but then all keepers do, and equally has had some great games. I think having Malcolm Webster back at the club will help RW come good again.

I also note that people did see some of Stockdales non save attempts during the first half of the debacle at PBoro. Not blaming him for the goals as the defence was shocking to say the least.

We have nothing to lose having RW on the books.
As for Sonko - at 30 not too old. A panic signing - maybe but I would say this his confidence will not be shot like the rest of the defence and it may be just having a new face lifts those around him to perform better.

If Ivar is fit then I am sure he will appear and maybe Mark Kennedy as the holding midfielder (and captain)

I am uncomfortable with panic buys but lets face it we are desperate for a new CB at least for this Saturday v Leeds. That's the reality. We need someone to make their presence felt and not just stand back...Sonko could work for us.

bobble - yes Wrighty was player of the year a few years back, then he had an injury hit season and those with short memories forgot now slate him. As back up goes he is decent and has a good few years in him as a keeper and back up and then he can move in to a coaching role.

Wright is still better than the 3 no hopers Keane signed between the sticks wasting us nearly £1million . would rather have Wright on bench than ALB
