Sonko Impressed With New Defensive Partner
Sonko Impressed With New Defensive Partner
Monday, 12th Sep 2011 16:15

Central defender Ibrahima Sonko was impressed with his new partner Danny Collins’s performance at Blackpool, despite the Blues’ 2-0 defeat. Collins, who played alongside Sonko with the Potters, joined Town the previous day on a 93-day loan and hadn’t even trained with the squad prior to the match.

Sonko said: “Danny did extremely well, so well in fact it looked as if he had been with the team since the summer!

"He was strong, he makes plenty of challenges and he talks a lot to the players. He knows a lot of the players anyway, so he's settled in really well.

"He came in and got on with the rest of the lads straight away and I'm sure his performances will get better and better."

stockdale
edwards sonko collins cresswell
carson andrews bullard martin
chorpa murphy

of course rb needs strengthing but that team selection would have us doing miles better imo

I know we didn't deserve anything from the game, and had nothing in terms of a goal threat of our own - but it's harsh to blame the central defenders for these goals - the first was a miss-hit shot which just happened to go straight to their striker, and the second was deflected.

What was poor, was the way that the midfield didn't do more to break up the attack.

He is better than Delaney.

So sonko is impressed?
Only two goals went in.
arr better than seven I suppose.

And why do people keep wanting that waste of space edwards in the team.
priskin would do a better job at right back.

Are player comments invited and vetted by Paul J ?
Presumably.
So PJ is looking to make a statement about his central pairing.
He really needs to do a Wenger on his players and make them ALL feel essential
Bluearmy's line-up looks good and the captain needs to be here for the long term and be effective. Kennedy has shown some form . But clearly PJ wants Collins full time. Is he the man? Can we start playing to feet?

Bluearmy, I think you will find that Martin is banned and Carson plays on the left, that said I don't think PJ playing 4 central midfielders is helping and we do need some pace and creativity out wide.

Agreed 'myleftfoot' . It was the midfield that let us down, no matter how much we love Bullard he loses the ball a lot (fitness?). Edwards was superb on Saturday despite not being a right back.

saffon sorry my mistake but most on here must agree that team like the one i shown would do hell of alot better than now

Garv - are you saying Edwards was superb on Saturday with regard to the rest of the team or as a right back. He has never looked like a good right back to me.

Bluearmy, to be honest I much prefer your team to PJ's, would probably play JET instead of Martin as I think if we can get him going he will provide a bit more goal threat and could swap around with Murphy. Martin's end product has yet to convince me and he is always liable to do something stupid and get booked/sent off.
Would love to see us go back in for Gio on loan until xmas to get him some match fitness and us some much needed creatuvity but can't see it happening.

Bluearmy - I agree with your team selection, I have no probs with Carson playing on the right and being left footed. As both he and Martin can play with right foot and they can go either way, bit like Downing the other night (although that was the only highlight of that particualr game).

In martins absence, why not Bowyer play on the right. He played there for England so surely can manage in the championship.

I'd go with:

Stockdale
Edwards Sonko Collins Cresswell
Carson Andrews Bullard Martin
Chopra JET

With subs of
Wright (just give him a 1 year deal)
Delaney
Bowyer
Murphy
Scotland (he needs to be getting at least 30 mins)

It's going to take time to gel and September is a ba$tardly hard month - but we've got a decent squad now!

We now need to keep the Collins and Sonko pairing for weeks to let them develop an understanding. That is a bit hard on Ingimarsson, but we can't afford to chop and change Roy Keane style.

Edwards had a good game on Saturday and people who say otherwise either weren't there are just blinded by previous performances in that position. I'm not saying keep him there, by all means get a recognized right back in but just want him to be given some credit. Was very unlucky slipping just as Clarke got the ball for the first which was a lucky goal.

We lost 2-0. Please can some one tell me what the positive is??

Oh and managed one shot - after 92 minutes. Now if Bluearmy et al are happy with that - great. But I am entitled to my opinion and sorry, but eight defeats in eleven is abysmal. End of story.

We need width and that means Carson , martin or push Creswell into LM and play Kennedy at LB
I am not sure Martin will come straight back in though
Carson will scare defenders - he can play on right ok or Martin
JET up front with Chops
Ainsley for Edwards - never was or will be a RB - with Sonko and Collins and kennedy Ainsley will have better chance than Delaney and Smith !!

Bluearmy, have to agree in most part in team selection. Martin would start if not banned but this side has a decent balance and versatility to it. Would like to see Cresswell and O'Connor match up on the left although never going to happen.

JET, Leadbitter, Ellington...no chance of a game in my first 16.

stockdale
ainsley sonko collins cresswell
edwards andrews bullard O'connor
chorpa murphy

Subs: Lee-Barrett, Delaney, Scotland, Priskin, Bowyer/Drury/Carson
