McCarthy: Reserves Will Face Tougher Games
McCarthy: Reserves Will Face Tougher Games
Wednesday, 21st Sep 2011 16:25

Coach Sean McCarthy says he hopes Town’s reserves side will be taking on better quality opposition in the weeks to come having beaten Gillingham 8-1 and Peterborough 5-0 in their last two friendlies. The Blues pulled their second string out of the less than inspiring Football Combination East Division in the summer in order to play only friendlies this season.

McCarthy, who took on reserves duties after Chris Kiwomya’s departure in the close season, says he has spoken to a number of Premier League clubs about matches: "I've been on the phone to Ronnie Jepson at QPR and we're hoping to get a game with them tied up in the next couple of weeks.

"We want to be playing strong opposition and if we can get the 'big boys' down, the likes of Tottenham and Arsenal, then we may even play those games at Portman Road.

"We will also be looking to play at the opposition's training ground as well, as I think that will benefit our players if they are playing somewhere other than at home."

All the matches so far this season have been played behind closed doors but where both clubs agree games will be open to the general public with details announced a couple of days beforehand.

Dont understand why they have been taken out of the league, that would be a bigger benifit having something other than 1 game at a time to play for!

Major problem for players like Murray - he's stagnating because of it.

I would prefer the Reserves to be in a league of some sort. Occasional behind closed doors friendlies at the Training Ground are not really a long-term answer to the problem.

If all the clubs in champ have the same problem can't they resolve it by having reserve fixtures to match the 1st team fixtures or something ?? Surely all clubs need friendlies/reserve league and shouldn't be that difficult to arrange. I may be wrong there though ??

A mistake not being in a league - who cares about a friendly - another Clegg foul-up? Only way to have a good 1st team is to have a competitive reserve team putting pressure on them.

I have always wondered why the reserves cant play in a local league and surely gain promotion just like other teams. My mind is thinking join the league Needham Mkt play in, and go from there.
Is this not what the teams in Spain and Italy do? why cant we do that?

Whatever league, it needs to be on a regular basis to keep them sharp.

Hardly any games being played and then far to easy, not gaining anything from them. Then wait 2 or 3 weeks we have another game, should win this one 8-1 ,great keep going like this ,should be able to get into the Needham market league. Wake up and get this team back playing regular football and put the first team players looking over their shoulders to keep their places if not, move over ? .The reserve fixtures are a joke! Its wake up time COYB

The way the first team players are performing,(Brilliant by the way!) players now in the reserves will hardly be called back into the first team unless a injury happens? Also the reserves will not be playing games near the same level as the first squad? The reserve games need to be of a higher standard not once or twice a month but every week.Lets get the reserves fighting to get into the first squad. and let the first squad fight to stay where they are, COYB
