Edwards Pleads Guilty
Edwards Pleads Guilty
Monday, 10th Oct 2011 10:58

Town right-back Carlos Edwards this morning pleaded guilty to charges of driving whilst disqualified and without insurance at South East Suffolk Magistrates’ Court. The case was adjourned until Thursday when, after pre-sentencing reports, the 32-year-old will be sentenced.

Edwards was arrested close to his home in Kesgrave on September 26th after driving his daughter to school.

The Trinidad and Tobago international’s wife gave birth to twins weighing 2lb on Saturday at Addenbrooke’s with the babies currently being cared for in incubators at the Cambridge hospital.

Edwards, who was joined in court by Town chief executive Simon Clegg, cited the complications with his wife’s pregnancy as a factor leading to him drive despite his ban earlier in the year.

Prior to being taken to Addenbrooke’s, his wife had been admitted Ipswich Hospital on September 25th and was subsequently moved to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital and then the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital with Edwards spending much of the night at her bedside after the West Ham game, the day after he committed the offences.

tractorgirls, You are sounding pretty ignorant to be honest.

Carlos shouldn't have been driving without insurance originally (3 months or so ago), that's the one thing I think people can hold against him. But it's incredibly harsh to jump on the guy's back for doing it this time. Whether he is a professional footballer or not, he was just doing what you or I should do in his shoes- he did absolutely anything he had to do because he was desperate to be there for his family. He wasn't drunk or on drugs speeding at 120+ mph like some off the rails players out there. He didn't kill anyone. By the laws of the book, he broke the law, fact, but a bit of understanding of his circumstances does need to be considered here.

Did you pipe up and show support for Norris when he did his goal celebration those years ago when he supported his mate who was found guilty of doing harm? If so, you're a hippocrite.. bit of perspective is needed here

Everyone talks about he was doing it for his wife etc... Does anyone know what he was doing at the time he was stopped, as as far as I can recall at no time has Edwards even said he was on the way to hospital or similar, surely he would have done if this was the case.

Sounds to me of someone trying to make it look better and give himself an excuse.

Back when the story first came out I said do not judge him. Some people were commenting " he should be locked up" etc. I am glad this has all become clear and I think that he will be ok. Good luck Carlos

Carlos, you were a winkle on the day, but Id've been one as well in the circumstances. Longer ban, bigger fine, smacked legs. Next !

Although our good wishes are with his wife and little 'uns, I'm sorry he should not have driven, as for what ever reason he was banned. It is not an excuse that his wife was in hospital, and unlike many people he could have easily afforded to take a Taxi to get him there.

We do not know he wasn't speeding, and presumably he had no insurance at the time, so innocent people could have been put at risk and that may be taken into account. Indeed we don't know he hadn't done this before and in any case something must have made the police aware, as they don't usually stop you for sticking to the speed limit or driving normally, do they!!?

Believe me I hope I'm wrong, but expect the court to set an example here, probably just because he is in the public eye. He will be very lucky man if he escapes a custodian sentence!

Just said on the local news that he wasn't driving his wife to hospital but his child to school.
If this is true then if he gets the book thrown at him he can have no complaints.

Throw the book at him!
Does he not have a brain between his ears?
Would all his apologists be saying this if we were talking about a Norwich player...I think not.
Does he really have no friends or family to drive him? Or the ability to call a cab?
The guy's an idiot and a public menace.
I suspect he'll get no sympathy at all and neither should he. All the so-called mitigating circumstances are tosh. If it were his first offence he might stand a chance, but having already been banned...no way.
He needs to live in the real world and realise he's not untouchable.

If his wife was already in hospital he has no excuse.

Yes he was a bit stupid for driving while banned.however there is mitigating circumstances. Think he should just get a hefty fine and a exstention to his ban or at worst given community service. Best wishes are with him and his family hope his wife and kids pull through

well he does have an excuse just cos his wife is already in hospital doesnt mean he shouldnt rush to her aid obviously there were complications ior the children wouldnt of been born premature at the weight of 2 pounds im starting to think half of the people on here want him to get jail he needs our support like his family needs his

They said on TV he was taking his child to school : hardly an emergency or necessity to break the law (it was probably only a few minutes' walk anyway : if not, it should have been!). That said, there is no benefit to anyone in locking him up at this stage : double his ban, fine him the same as last time, and if he commits an offence while banned again, THEN send him to prison for the duration of the driving ban.

If he was taking his child to school then there were NO mitigating circumstances, his wife being in hospital is a side issue.

Cant see the point in a custodial sentence. Rather;

Big fine, longer ban, and CRUSH HIS CAR.

I said at the time, he might face cutodial sentence. if he was driving uninsured and banned with his child as a passenger and driving to school with so many children also at risk then i think it is quite serious. Not enough for a custodial but enough to be banned for three years with a significant fine. He is a stupid twonk for having a child in a car, and a stupid twonk to be without transport to see his children in hospital. All in all, another footballer who does what they want when they want.
I can't drive. My ex went to hospital in a taxi when she was dropping. I walk. I walked the kids to school when they were young. And i'm fat. i thought all the exercise would make me slim - must be a gland problem.

Whilst I have some sympathy with Carlos, if his wife had to get to hospital, he's banned and doesn't have a licence, why not consider a friend, neighbour, taxi or for goodness sake an Ambulance. His circumstances are 'mitigating' but they are not an excuse for putting other peoples lives at risk (He hasn't a licence so presumably hasn't passed a test) or even the lives of his own family. The number of you on here who said you'd have done the same, need to think first about the consequences and act responsibly.

does his contract allow him to play for the Brixton 11. Then deport him. blue-em-away etc you are dicks

gmanrom added 15:55 - Oct 10
I would expect a suspended sentence in this case and a fine, with extension to his ban. That should be the book thrown at him, if he ignores this again then he deserves a custodial sentence. He could get a custodial sentence as he has totally ignored the judge, but i really hope he doesnt for them poor babies sake they deserve better.

Did he have to drive without insurance in the first place months ago? - NO
Did he have to get banned from driving ?-NO
Did he have to rush his wife to hospital in an emergency ? NO
Was it so panic stations and complications of the pregnancy that he could not play v West Ham ? - NO
Did he have plenty of warning that his wife was pregnant and wouldnt be around to take the other children to school ? YES
Did he organise anything to enable this to happen ? NO
Can he afford a taxi ? YES

He has pleaded guilty because he is guilty ,this country needs to start making people responsible for their actions rather than blame everything else but themselves .As someone in the spotlight for youngsters to look up to this is not a good example to ignore getting insurance ,tax ,drive while your banned ,if it was some youngster from liverpool repeatedly doing the same i would imagine the majority on here would not feel the same way ?
Time to grow up Carlos and start looking after your family

Gazelle added 17:05 - Oct 10
Very well put Surco, he was a complete tw** not having insurance and getting himself banned in the first place. To all those who say they would have done the same for their wife i ask the question. WHAT IF HE'D RUN OVER YOUR WIFE ?
