Sharp New Move Followed Failed Rhodes Approach Claim
Sharp New Move Followed Failed Rhodes Approach Claim
Sunday, 30th Oct 2011 21:30

Town’s reported renewed move for Doncaster Rovers frontman Billy Sharp came after the Blues failed with an approach for ex-striker Jordan Rhodes, according to one of Sunday’s tabloids.

On Thursday, Town were again linked with Sharp, who was the subject of a rebuffed £2.3 million offer in the summer, along with a £300,000 bid for Rovers midfielder James Coppinger.

Sharp, 25, was mysteriously left out of Doncaster’s 16 for Saturday’s 1-1 home draw with Coventry City due to what Rovers officially referred to as a “a family problem”, while Southampton have also been linked with a £2 million deal on a loan becoming a permanent switch basis. Sharp turned down the chance to join the Saints in the summer after the clubs had agreed a £3.25 million fee.

On Saturday, Doncaster chairman John Ryan revealed that his club need to raise cash to reduce an expected £3.6 million loss this season.

Rhodes, 21, was controversially sold to Huddersfield for £850,000 by former boss Roy Keane in the summer of 2009 and has subsequently impressed for the Terriers, scoring 58 goals in 97 starts and 18 sub appearances. This season he has already netted 18 times for Huddersfield and Scotland’s U21s, including three hat-tricks.

Manchester United were linked last week with plenty of Championship clubs, including Reading and Crystal Palace, previously having been mentioned in connection with the Oldham-born frontman. If and when Rhodes moves on from Huddersfield, Town are entitled to an undisclosed percentage of the profit the League One club make on the striker, the son of former Blues keeper-coach Andy.

The link between the Blues and Rhodes junior could come from Paul Jewell’s presence at two recent Huddersfield games, however, the frontman came on as a sub with only 19 minutes remaining of one and was unused in the other.

Before anyone else bleats about how we should never have sold Jordan, I suggest they read Stanway Blue's post above and use their common sense.

What makes stanway blue's post "the gospel" ?
Two pacey young hungry strikers up front sounds good to me.

Letting Rhodes go looks like a mistake - but people have short memories. The club made it clear at the time that there was no place in the squad for two unproven youngsters. As far as any of us know, Roy was told to make a choice. We therefore sold Rhodes and held on to Wickham. The latter was sold for over 8 Million pounds and has scored in the PL. Rhodes is still unproven at Championship level. It was hardly a disaster holding on to Wickham was it? There is also the issue of Jim sacking Jordan's Dad. There is no guarantee that Rhodes would make it at this level - look at Sam Parkin and to an extent Charlie Austin.

On the whole, Roy's decisions were poor though. He was rightly sacked. However, I am still far from convinced that PJ's have been as good as some people make out. Too many injury prone players over 30. We are now paying the price for that. No pace. Lots of injuries. Look at JET, Ellington, Ingamarsson, Bowyer etc etc. There have been some good signings - but sadly on loan. These players could leave.

Doncaster made a mistake holding on to Sharp and we had a lucky escape. His injury record this year has yet again been abysmal.

I think people who are slating Jewell need to get real! We are on 20 points 4 points off the top 4 and we were no where near the top half under keane, There is an Imporvement for sure but I do agree pace is lacking.

I for one after being at the millwall game would love to sign Liam Feeney, he played RW and completely destroyed Kennedy and he had skill taking on our players with confidence, had good passing, took their Free kicks and even has a long throw. Very good player and I though he was the main difference between the 2 sides including Jay Simpson who I cant see why Hull let him go.

So what if 'The club made it clear at the time that there was no place in the squad for two unproven youngsters.' The Club has proved itself over a number of years to be totally out of its depth in employing players and Managers (Jewell the exception)

I'd like to think we'd turn it around against Donny on Saturday.

Let's make a decent bid for Rhodes..he's the Javier Hernandez of league one..could make a huge difference to whether we get promoted or not..still very young and if he carries on the way he is it'll be only a matter of time 'til he's picked off by someone else..GET IN NOW TOWN!

There really are some clowns on this website. Roy Keane left a huge mess behind and Paul Jewell has got to sort it out. End of. We need stability which means, we all get behind Paul jewell and give him the support the Club, the players and he needs. Yes he has made questionable signings, but he has also made some cracking signings - chopra for a million, cresswell and Bowyer.

Get behind the club and show the support. If not, "jog on" to Colchester or the Scum.

I get fed up reading the same old dross week in and week out. I support the team. Yes there are things that annoy me, but on the scale of things it could be quite a bit worse.

Will you lot give it a rest, its getting beyond boring!

At the time of selling, we had Rhodes who had shown nothing/very little in his limited chances and Connor Wickham who will ultimatley net Ipswich a total of £12m, the club wasn't big enough for the 2 of them and Keane made the right decision and that is proven because Connor is the one that earned us to fat pay cheque.

There was no way that both of them could play together due to a lack of experience and limiting Connors chances would have cost us a massive transfer fee and Jordan wanted to play first team matches.

Yes, there is an arguement that we should try and sign him back but for those that say Keane was wrong to sell are not looking at the bigger picture. We cant have it all ways.

Only fools think they could not be at the club at the same time.

I see Doncaster have bought in Diouf, so presumably Sharp is on his way somewhere to pay off the debts. Would be happy to have him here.
As Rhodes left on bad terms with Keane not sure he would come back here. Thanks Roy, good one.

Nice to see Connor score at the weekend.

What puzzles me is why did Rhodes only get 19 minutes of action in those two games that Jewell attended?

Nothing like the Rhodes saga to continually give me a laugh.
He didn't need to drop down in football class, could have stayed and proved Keano wrong.
And he is going to play for Scotland having been born in Bolton or somewhere courtesy of going to school there. William Wallace would be turning in his grave, if he had one.
As for buying him back.....wonder if Bent Wickham or Terry Butcher are up for it?

Why should we not be surprised by this, six months before Mr Keane arrived a certain Mr Magilton was quoted as saying that this lad Rhodes has a very promising career in front of him and ITFC will do everything possible to make that happen.....well we certainly did well there in the hands of Keane...disgrace, absolute disgrace..

Sharp will be with us before long, to which I look forward....carry on the rebuilding Mr jewell, I for one support you and look on with interest.

I also look forward to more academy talent coming forward....

blueherts - you're right - still good prospects and bargains to be had - look at what, and where Paul Lambert has sourced many of his crew over time.
And they are keen to impress when given the chance - but we don't even give our own youngsters a fair crack to do so.

DiamondGezzer - if we can't turn it around against Doncaster at home - it certainly will be a poor show.

While I am not standing up for Keane for selling Rhodes, I am trying to look at the bigger picture. At the start of last season we had a major lack of proven goal scoring frontmen at ITFC, but 2 up and coming youth players (CW +JR). I am suspecting Keane felt he had no room for 2 youths but wanted a proven goal scorer. Priskin was a proven goal scorer at Watford, and the sale of JR helped to buy Priskin. Had we of kept both CW + JR would they both of been happy? Would CW of had the chances to of become the player he is today had they both stayed.
There is many what if's in football that either work or dont. What if JR had stayed and we did not play the type of football that he needs to score the goals? Then we may of got nothing for him. What happened happened. My only wish is there is not a clause in the sale of JR, where we get first crack at buying him back at a set fee, but like I said, there is so many whats if"s in life!
