Jewell Still Looking for Deadline Day Additions
Jewell Still Looking for Deadline Day Additions
Thursday, 24th Nov 2011 10:02

Town boss Paul Jewell says he could add to his squad before this afternoon’s 5pm loan deadline. The Blues manager, who dismissed newspaper links with the likes of QPR’s Rob Hulse and Cardiff’s Darcy Blake, hopes to see striker Ronan Murray join Swindon and Shane O’Connor move on to Northampton, while the likes of Luke Hyam and Tommy Smith could also make temporary switches.

Jewell said: “We’ve tried to get a couple of players in, but I think all the clubs are chasing the same players in the Championship and it’s difficult trying to get players from Premier League teams.

“We haven’t been successful yet but there’s seven or eight hours left. If we don’t get any arrivals in I’m more than confident that the squad that we’ve got can climb up the table.”

Jewell says QPR striker Rob Hulse’s agent rang him yesterday but he told him he wasn’t interest in signing his former Derby striker.

Reported Town target Gary Gardner has joined Coventry from Aston Villa, although Jewell admits he’s a player he admires, while the Blues boss says he’s not made approaches for QPR defender Danny Shittu or Cardiff’s Darcy Blake, despite centre-half being the area where he feels he most needs cover.

In terms of further players joining Tamás Priskin in moving on, Jewell says striker Ronan Murray is expected to sign for League Two Swindon on loan before the deadline: "We think that Ronan Murray will be going to Swindon, which would be a great move for him.

"I hope that the deal goes through for Ronan's sake, because he's a terrific lad and he needs to go to a level where he's going to play games and score a few goals, which I'm sure he will.

"The likes of Ronan, Luke Hyam and Tommy Smith do need to go out and play and I'm prepared to let the young lads go out on loan so that they can play regular matches."

League Two Northampton have enquired about out of favour left-sided midfielder or full-back Shane O’Connor and that deal could go through, while Jaime Peters is set to have his loan at Bournemouth extended for a third month.

Meanwhile, Keith Andrews is back in training having undergone nose surgery last Thursday and is in contention to start against Reading at Portman Road on Saturday.

Central defender Ibrahima Sonko is less likely to face his old club, although he’s back in training after his torn hamstring.

The Blues are unlikely to risk playing the Senegalese international with games coming thick and fast in the weeks to come.

Shame Sonko won't be ready for Saturday, but there, still seven hours to go.

I wonder if Ronan Murray is less likely to get goals at this level than people like Scotland or Ellington or Murphy. At least he can finish even if he is a little sloppy. He would also be the most up for it.

Blinding idea PJ..Let the only one's with a bit of fire in their bellies to go out on loan and let the old staggers swagger along and pick up their appearance bonuses, cos at the rate they're going it won't be win bonuses.

Question....Is Leadbetter a mute..?

Bigol - Spot on - If ever there was a need for a guy- in form ie hitting back of the net recently , its Ronan Murray - teams will know little or nothing about him and gives us something different - throwing the old warhorses at em like Ellington or Murphy - is old news and they will know all about them - Element of surprise , - surprise and fear are the two things etc etc ( Monty Python great sketch - Spanish Inquisition ?)

Bigol I'd say Scotland was the only player who actually did look up for it on Saturday (and Collins). Chopra, on the other hand, didn't look like you'd be able to motivate him if his life depended on it.

I cannot understand the thinking in ever signing Ellington, done nothing for years and doing nothing here, complete waste of money, I would give O'Connor and Murphy a go as Chopra and Scotland's heads appear to be elsewhere.

Would be good to see Murray grabbing a few goals here in Swindon - may even pop along to see him play. The only down side being I thought he'd be in with a shout after his performance for the Ressies.

Enough is enough. I thought it couldn't get worse than the time under Keane but I'm beginning to wonder! Where's the plan guys and what is it? The summer was a disgrace - no defenders and no investment in the future (Cresswell aside - JET is not interested and will drift away, mark my words). I wrongly thought this meant a chance for the kids but no, PJ is old school and presumably likes working with overpaid old pros he doesn't have to coach or develop - that's called coaching by the way Mr Jewell. Presumably Healy and Drury, both of whom at least actually try to play football the right way, have had enough too.

Would we be in worse nick now if we'd given O'Connor, Carson, Drury, Murray and Hyam a go this season? At least they are our players. And when we know we need to rebuild from the back, why sign a loan keeper awhy not sign defenders first?

PJ will probably be on the golf course like he was on the Jan transfer window deadline day, so don't expect big things to happen today.

Either PJ has a grand plan and is being very shrude and keeping it all close to his chest......or he has absolutely no idea whatsoever what to do.

I hope for the former but suspect the latter - prove me wrong PJ, please.

Next manager should be Baldric at least he has a cunning plan.

Lets be truthful, this week is all about trimming the wage bill, let as many as he gets offers for go out on loan, signed a GK on a short term loan as cover in case Fulham want Stockdale back and stick with what we have, its all about money, and I think he has been told by Cleggie to get the wage bill down as gates are falling, there will be further movement in January, but no signings unless he can get rid of Priskin and Leadboots on permanent deals.

worcesterblue have to agree with you. Pj seems to have lost the plot. Hopefully we can get shittu to shore up the defence. Pj always on about no pace & then sending murray o connor hyman on loan its crazy. Would prefer to be playing our own kids & being in the position we are in than all these journeymen its not the ipswich ways of old

I guess Jewell's plan was A to fill the huge gaps in the side without spending much money hence the experienced players, and B to bring in younger players to build for the future. He has done A, but we badly need to see B.

As things stand, what players do we have contracted to start next season?

Goalkeepers: None
Defenders: Cresswell, Delaney
Midfielders: Bullard, Emmanuel-Thomas, Martin
Strikers: Chopra, Ellington

That's about it, isn't it? Too many short term stop gaps in the squad right now. That's not blaming Jewell, as I guess his funding has been very limited and he inherited an awful squad from Keane.

tractorboy2434 - agree with you. I wouldn't imagine we are overly looking to bring in more players today. If a gem became available i'm sure we'd make a move but i think we all agree that we need to step away from the loan market (other than to send some young players out) and work out the best team from what we have here at the moment. Not the Biggest 11 names on paper. The best TEAM.

Hopefully we will then spend a bit of cash in Jan on a couple of decent centre halves, a right back and a pacey midfielder.

Sending the young lads out could be a good idea, they'll be playing regular football, Jewell will be able to mark their progress and then when they come back if they've done well hopefully they'll be given their chance! Glad we're not going in for Hulse!

this man is slowly but surely ruining our footbal club to a much greater extent than even keane..
the problem is we have a recluse for a chairman and a CEO who is as clueless as the manager..

be very afraid!

That rather blows a big hole in the much repeated myth that we are building for the future. That's not even a starting eleven, and a couple of them don't look like they'll make the end of the season never start the next one.

If this is the best we can do after £8m from Wickham and a good earner from some cup games then it doesn't look to good. Unless we can start to climb the table soon and be in and around the playoffs for the rest of the season I can't see the attendances picking up nor anyway of avoiding another drop in our season ticket sales. Is it likely that we will pick up any money in transfer fees from Priskin or Leadfooter ?

We are doomed, doomed I tell ya
