Jewell: We Deserved to Win
Jewell: We Deserved to Win
Saturday, 3rd Dec 2011 18:10

Blues boss Paul Jewell felt his side deserved to have beaten bogey side Watford after the Hornets came from behind to claim a 2-1 victory at Portman Road. The loss means Town’s winless streak against the visitors stretches to 14 games and their run of defeats is up to seven.

Jewell said: “We should have had three points. On Tuesday we were abject, but today you could see the determination — we just didn’t have any luck.

“I’m not one for blaming luck, I never have been, but for their first goal [John] Eustace goes to lay it back, it sticks under his foot, the little ricochet goes their way and they go on to get a penalty.

“We should have dealt with their second goal, but we’ve had balls flash across their box, we’ve had shots saved, we’ve done everything but score another goal.

“I’m hugely disappointed to lose seven games in a row, but effort-wise I can’t question the players today.”

Jewell said there were few arguments from his players about the penalty: “There were no complaints from our side.

“I didn’t have a great view from where we were, but Sonko didn’t complain. You’re not the first person to ask me that, someone else said it didn’t look a penalty but the lads didn’t complain.”

Jewell admitted his 21st-placed side are now in a relegation battle: “No doubt about it, we are. After 19 games we’re fourth bottom of the league, so of course we’re in a relegation battle.

“But I just saw that two weeks ago Burnley were fourth bottom, now they’re 10th, so it can change quickly, but it’s seven games on the bounce now and I’m aware of that more than anybody.

“It was a day to stand up and be counted," he added."There was no hiding place for any of us. The only thing that went against us today was the result.

“Maybe I see it wrong, but I think I’m an honest enough manager to know when we’ve been outplayed and been bad and today I think we were dead unlucky.”

Watford manager Sean Dyche was pleased to grab the three points: “With Ipswich’s unfortunate run you don’t want to be the team they turn over because that run will end at some point.

“We knew it would be a tough game and we knew we’d have to go all the way through the game whatever the ref played minutes-wise, and we didn’t.

“It wasn’t always silky from us, it wasn’t always our best performance but the desire of the players and the work ethic of the players was fantastic, I thought.”

Enough is enough. We now, along with Northampton Town who are currently 89th in the football league have shipped the most goals in the English professional leagues.

Last season PJ played 21 games and on 6 occasions we conceded 3 or more goals, this year 7 times out of 19. 33% of PJ's games have seen us concede 3 or more. Give or take this is a seasons worth of games.

I am not one to ask for a change of manager lightly as also mentioned by other contributors I have a lack of faith in Clegg/Evans to get a young hungry manager or someone who has the Ipswich style about them, but it is time to try and save us from the drop.

For all those that don't want to change the manager I respect your opinion but you need to ask yourself at what point is enough?

If it was your money would you give money to PJ in Jan to dig you further in it? Bit like Chopra who is chasing his gambling losses. Don't do it, take the hit, draw a line and move on.

Sorry PJ it's time to go.

walberswick-
you are normally very negative (your 4-1 prediction to them for example) but your possession stats are correct. I have just come back from the game and am wondering if we all went to see the same game. Yes, we created chances. Yes, we played better. But it was difficult to play worse than the way we did against Burnley. Watford were woeful at times, truly dreadful. We blew a few chances (particularly early on) and then completely run out of steam. You could tell Watford were going to equalise, they acted like the home team-put us under massive pressure and BAM-1-1. From that moment on, there was only one team in it. Watford suddenly woke up, started playing some really good passing football and we were hanging on for a draw. Soon after, 2-1. After that I felt it was much more likely that we were going to lose 3-1 than ever get a goal back.
Our midfield is too old. They haven't got the running in them. That is clearly PJ's fault as he has signed them. Our defence played better but never looked like keeping a clean sheet.
Ipswich 46% Watford 54% possession, and we were the HOME team.
This is Watford we are talking about, Watford. When was the last time they won an away game?

Ivorfeeling........agree its time for PJ to go. If we continue to lose, lose, lose we will be relegated. We can't hope to stay in this league by continously praying that the 3 teams below us lose every game.

There seems to be something wrong with my computer. I keep clicking re-fresh on the TWTD website and yet Phil's breaking news story about Paul Jewell being dismissed has still not appeared? It goes without saying that Marcus Evans has sacked the manager this evening. When it comes through, probably any second now, Phil's report will say the following:

‘A decision was taken tonight by the Chairman of Ipswich Town, Marcus Evans to relieve Paul Jewell of his duties. The reasons stated by the club for the manager's exit were not just the run of 7 defeats in a row (and the embarrassment of conceding 7 goals in one game to some part-time fenland types based in a shed near the Isle of Ely), but also the abject end to last season, which saw Jewell's slovenly rabble lose 3 out of their last 4 games, a spell that saw them concede 5 at home to Norwich and 4 against Swansea and Leicester.

The poor performances in August and September were also cited as a factor in Evans' decision. ME thanked Jewell for his best efforts and for his cheeky chappie humour, for which Merseyside is so rightly renowned. The chairman said that, at times, the wit was of such a sparkling quality he could not help but compare PJ to the father of occasional Radio 2 disc jockey Liza Tarbuck, when he was in his 1970s bow-tied pomp. But sadly the performances on the pitch were even more comical than the endearing Scouse wit offered up by the manager. Evans stated that he therefore, sadly, had no choice but to bring to an end the tactical genius' reign. He said, “to put it bluntly, I've grown tired of watching such a sack of s#£% each Saturday afternoon and Tuesday night. Do you know how many leisure centres I could buy for the amount I spend on Jimmy Bullard's wages each week? No? Well, I tell you. Quite a few. That's how many.”

Evans went on to note that, with attendances plummeting, he would soon be just about the only person still turning up to games at Portman Road, a risk to his anonymity that he was unwilling to accept. The chairman concluded his lengthy statement by conceding that, in retrospect, appointing someone with a background in the cadets and egg and spoon races to be his chief executive was a less than glorious decision. Mr Evans declined to comment when asked whether or not, prior to appointing Mr Jewell to be manager of ITFC, he had conferred with the staff and fans from two of the latter's last three employers, Derby County FC and Sheffield Wednesday FC, as to his suitability for such a role.'

like the humour Brockley Blue.
Sadly, no chance of PJ going tonight. Difficult for Clegg to sack him immediately after giving him public support. We might have to wait for a few more losses before it happens (if we lose the next 3 or 4 on the trot I can see it happening).
7 straight defeats. SEVEN. A very sad time to be a Town Fan. Starting to forget waht it feels like to get a draw let alone a win.

I think that PJ has bitten off more than he can chew in certain areas. He backed his ability to manage players with track records off the field like Jimmy Bullard and Michael Chopra and they've turned round and bitten him on the backside. I live in the North East and it's common knowledge up here about MC's problems - nine years ago he was being spoken of, in terms of potential, in the same breath as Wayne Rooney. It's very frustrating. As a Town supporter for over 40 years, the last thing I'll ever do is call for the manager to be sacked - all those involved at the sharp end need the support of all Town fans in times like these and I'll be making the 600 mile round trip for the Derby game in two weeks time, COYB.

camposlocks - whatever you mean by that, Jim spent a vast amount of money on a squad which although by position looked close t othe play-offs, by performance over the course of the season and in relation to the season before were poor. He has sacked for failing to improve his performance, or even come close, and for draining all the money in the process.

He was a manager appointed purely to appease the fans and although he nearly pulled his first job off, his next two jobs seem to have shown he probably didn't have the calibre to be a successful manager at getting us up and keeping us up. We then bought in Keane, who was never going to do well. We needed experiance and therefore that's what we've appointed in Jewell. I'd say Jewell was the wisest move out of all of those yet look at the progress. I know he saved us from financial turmoil etcetc. But has Evans done much to help the club and how much is he doing to support the managers? He just seems to chat to them on the phone and back them until the fans shout loud enough to sack them and then decides to bring in someone even worse!

For the record, I also wouldn't bring in Campo, I hope that's just a joke...

Very frustrating day today. We came out of the blocks well, created some good chances and at 1-0 was looking promising. Watford suddenly changed gear and there was only one team in it. What the hell is wrong with our midfield? Their midfield players ran through us time and time again. I don't blame the defence today, the midfield (after an explosive start)let us all down. Watford aren't Real Madrid, why did we make them look like they are?
September 10th was the last time Watford won away.
Barnsley will annihilate us next and it will be 8.

I am gutted. Will we ever win again? We played better today than we did in any of the previous 4 home games (including the win against Pompey). At least the players showed some fight today and we created some chances. However, yet again we have lost to a mediocre side because of our poor defending. Although we were much better than recently, I don't think we can say that we deserved to win. If you give away a soft penalty and then lose the ball in your own box to concede 2 goals you probably don't really deserve to win the game?

If PJ sticks with a settled team and we can continue to play with the same spirit, and cut out the individual errors we should be ok, but that is a big IF. We have often lacked fighting spirit this season and have made silly mistakes in the vast majority of games!

I think we will have to win a game before xmas for PJ to keep his job. Whoever is in charge in January must sign a RB, holding midfielder, and a winger. If Jimmy and Chops cannot be rejuvinated we will also need a creative midfielder, and a striker. These must all be young, hungry players.

All I want for xmas is a win!

I watched my first Ipswich game in 1967. I've been a season ticket holder for longer than I care to remember. It's never been this bad. Today OK they were a tad unlucky, but look at the results under PJ. 1-7 agianst p'borough, 2-5 v Southampton, 0-4 v Burnley, 1-5 v Norwich, 1-4 v Milwall. Any more horrible results I've forgotten about? Sorry but I've seen a few managers since Bill McGarry, but this guy is without question the bottom of the pile by a long long way. I didn't believe it could get worse than RK but it has. It's just desperate.

comical defending again. better team spirit and a couple of good chances but this is watford we are talkin about.

hoped the clowns wouldn't be there today. they're back. they gave watford an early xmas present. must ease their relegation angst.
martin wasn't completely to blame for their goal. in fact he played a good game today.
keystone cops at the back. pj needs to sort this out. no rightback since david wright and watford exploited it over and over.
came back liking the team spirit but hating our bambi on ice defence

Everyone needs to calm down on here!! Did any of you go to the match? Doesn't sound like it and if you did, were you wearing blind folds?

I didn't enjoy losing and I don't like the position we are in but...

That was a half decent performance from Town today and we were very unlucky not to win that match..Watford were not even worth a draw, we were on top for 70 mins until Sonko gave away what looked like a stonewall penalty (with luxury of a replay). Then Martin should have cleared his lines and Watford got a lucky rebound/bobble to scrabble the 2nd. We had at least 5 decent chance in each half & countless balls across the goal and into the box..

That was the best we have played since the Brighton game and if we keeping playing like that, then wins will come and we will get out of trouble.

We just needed a bit of luck like they had. The only saving grace is Bristol City & Forest both lost in the 90+ mins - proof that when you are down, your luck is out.

Incidentally, I am not a fan of Bowyer - I think he is a poor signing - but it was his best home game in a Town shirt today. Sonko was also a big plus.

@WhoisJimmyJuan

Fair enough, but my comment wasn't intended as a veiled support for Jewell; I agree with you that we are in freefall atm and accept that it may well be necessary for him to go for us to move forward.

However, I don't want Evans and Clegg to sack Jewell and then simply appoint the first willing and available managerial candidate. IF we do replace Jewell before the end of the season we either need to appoint someone on a strictly short term basis (a la Guus Hiddink at Chelsea), or we need to think very, very carefully about our next appointment.

COYBs!

Also we sacked Keane (glad we did btw), as were we in a similarly bad position last year, then we are back to square one..one year later..so is sacking Jewell at the moment going to change anything in the next year? New manager comes in, has a clearout out, brings in his players..and he we go again?? It hasn't worked so far..

Someone connected with ITFC on the ex-playing staff mentioned believes that PJ will be gone soon and it will be Burley & Osman...fancy that anyone?

Not too sure what some peoples definition of progress is but as fans of this club we are being sold short and it appears from some peoples comments that just because we played better (but lost) that things will be ok.

Next four games are Barnsley away, Derby home, leicester away and Reading away. How many more points are we going to get and take into 2012 on this form ? Then in January we have Forest home, Blackpool home, Leeds away and West Ham at home.

When looking back at previous seasons at the same stage we have made real progress:-
08/09 - Played 19, won 7, lost 6, drawn 6, for 27 against 19. 27 points and 11th
09/10 - Played 19, won 2, lost 6 drawn 11, for 19, against 29. 17 points and 22nd
10/11 - Played 19, won 7, drawn 3, lost 9, for 21, against 26. 24 points and 17th,
11/12 - Played 19, won 6, drawn 2, lost 11, for 26, against 39. 20 points and 21st.

Under PJ we have lost the most at this stage and let in the most. I agree that we cannot keep lurching from one manager to the next but is he the one to make progress? On this evidence he isn't and our best 11 could not beat a poor Watford side.

Come January we will have no Collins and is Andrews going to want to join a championship side battling against relegation when he wants to go to the European Championship?

These are worrying time and fear one more defeat will be PJ's last as manager.

Only 15,600 town fans there today and will fall with him in charge given current prices. My mate is a Palace fan and as a member pays £17.

Our club is in a dark place and cannot see how the current management will succeed.

I didn't go to the game, but had a group of friends who did. They said the team played well in spurts but gave possession away too cheaply to Watford. One of their goals was a stonewall penalty and one was a gift. Ridiculous defending again. Stockdale played a blinder and made a great save from Kightly in the first 10/15 mins (they said he should have got MOM- Stockdale that is,not kightly)
Should have got a draw according to them, but Watford did shade it. Happy with the game though, important thing was that we actually played football. None of them can be bothered to contribute tonight, too depressed.
Sounds like inbetween warky's tash and the rest of the reports.
Hopefully I can now make the average IQ 13.

Can't understand everyone questioning Chopra going off. He did nothing all game, you can say he didn't get service, but Scotland was up there too and he did tonnes more, worked to win the ball back and actually keep it, Chopra can't hold on to the ball! Plus he did have one chance which I thought was easier to miss first half, right on his head and he just didn't jump? Why should Ellington, or any striker on the bench have to sit there and watch him do nothing? At least Ellington won balls in the air and gave us a chance.

Should Jewell go?
I would say he should be judged on-
Results
Performances
Signings
Development of the playing style
Development of individual performances
Off the pitch development- coaching team

Christ almighty- I came on here to say that I was worried if Jewell does go that Clegg and Evans could not be trusted to recruit a new manager - but when I analyse Jewells performance on the above - I just do not see the point in keeping him. If we wait until after January and the window closes it will be too late, If Jewell is given money in January- can we trust him to sign a decent centre back and centre mid to stop us leaking goals? if Jewell does make good players, is he capable of organising a team anyway?

I am sure that he has been a good manager and I do think Jewell is being let down by his players and coaching staff but on current evidence this guy is awful.

Anyone noting how many goals we are conceding in the last 20 minutes with our rookie fitness coach? any coincidence
